SALMON KINGS THIS WEEK JAN 26 2010 CALIFORNIA DREAMING

Salmon Kings Booster Club

Win at home and split on the road is an old hockey adage. In a four game home sweep followed by a weekend split in Bakersfield, the Victoria Salmon Kings followed that script. Once the ice had been cleared, the Salmon Kings finished the weekend still in 3rd overall in the ECHL National Conference. They have scored the most goals (148) in the conference and are third lowest in goals against. With an ECHL low of 547 total team penalty minutes, Coach Morrison's crew remains the most disciplined squad in the league. Three player movements took place. Rob Smith has gone to the Central League's Missouri Mavericks and Mike Salekin was released. Sources say he is also headed somewhere in the CHL. Chad Painchaud's stellar play was noted by the AHL Manitoba Moose who called him up on Saturday. Two road games in Bakersfield took place following the AllStar Break. Playing before large crowds in the Rabobank Arena, the Condors gained a Friday night 4-3 overtime win while on Saturday the Salmon Kings won a close one, 2-1. Both David Shantz for Victoria and Condors German goalie, Timo Peilmeier went the distance in goal. Both had been teamates in the AllStar Game. Adam Naglich opened the scoring Friday night for Bakersifield with a short handed marker. Adam Taylor responded a few minues later, with Tim Weddurburn earning the first of his two assists on the night. Three minutes later Condor Ryam Menei made it 2-1 Bakersfield. In the second Andy Brandt tied the game. Late in the third, on passes from Gary Gladue and Olivier Latendresse, centre Olivier Filion put the pack past Pelmeier to give the Salmon Kings the lead. Then just as in Victoria, Marty Raymond demonstrated his prowess as a master late game tactician. With 43 second left, Stephan Goulet forced overtime. Then at 3:51 of four on four overtime, Mark Mitera fired in the winning goal for Bakersfield. Saturday night in Bakersfield brought out an even larger crowed, but with a close fought 2-1 victory, the Salmon Kings sent the Condors faithful home disappointed. As on Friday, Condor Adam Naglich got the first goal. A little less than three minutes later, from passes by Randall Gelech and Olivier Latendresse, Patrick Coulombe tied the match. With Condors captain Shane Weller off for slashing, at 10-01 of the second period, Brandon Roach and Neil Petruic assisted on Olivier Filion's game winner. This was the first point as a Salmon King for Neil Petruic. Both teams had a collective plus/minus mark of even for the night. Had it been a total goal series, it would have been a tie, 5-5. Condors held a total two game shot advantage of 71 to 50. Perhaps another way of looking at the last four games, all against Bakersfield, if it had been a playoff series the Salmon Kings would have a 3 to 1 lead. JAWS AND MORE....last seasons California journey included a team visit to Disneyland, this year they went to Universal Studios. This made for some fun footage and interesting comments on local newscasts by Patrick Coulombe and Gary Gladue. NORTH BUT STILL IN THE GOLDEN STATE---this week the California swing takes the team to Stockton for a three game series against the Thunder. Stockton has consistently had great attendance ever since they joined the ECHL. BEAR alert---get lots of cans of bear spray, for in early February, Wes Goldies rival for the National Conference goal scoring lead, Ryan Kinasweich will lead his Utah Grizzlies into Victoria for a three game series at SOFMC. PUCKS AND JETS...be sure to visit the Booster Club table on the concourse, ask about our activites, maybe even join our group. Autographed pucks are available before the game and between periods. They go for $10 each and the proceeds go to the Goals That Gives Charity. Check out the big board that has a rink design and see how the $10 per goal and goalie win are shaping up. And ask about our Fly Anywhere West Jet Flies Raffle. Later in the month, the picture frames painted by the players available via silent auction.
