While every season has statistical anomalies, one thing I find rather fascinating about hockey, both fantasy and non, are streaks. Pundits will tell you that any similarities from one season to the next are purely coincidental. With all of the inevitable personnel variances, schedule et al, there will always be streaks to some extent. The X-factor is how long the streak persists, and
Hockey players have always stood out from basketball, football, and to a lesser extent, baseball players because they carry themselves on and off the ice with a certain demeanor. Some call it boring or calculated, while others say they're humble and down-to-earth. Some of the greatest leaders the NHL has ever seen, including Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman, and Bobby Orr, were very soft-spoken players who did more with their stick than their mouths. They were professional and knew their place in th

The Vancouver Canucks first true 'comeback' win of the season came in a slightly bizarre, but memorable fashion against the Anaheim Ducks, Wednesday night.
The teams had met only once earlier in California, with the Ducks skating to a 4-1 win. Whatever the reason, the Ducks seem to have it out for the Canucks, and for years, players the ilk of Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, and Corey Perry have posed problems. Problems that were not kind to Vancouver's Goals Against Average. With an exhaustiv
On a recent trip to Toronto I made my way to the Air Canada Centre on a Toronto Maple Leafs game night to interview some hockey fans. My time there confirmed what I had anticipated: Leaf Nation is certainly very loyal to their hockey team!
I asked people 3 questions:
1. When will the Maple Leafs next make the playoffs?
2. Can you name 5 Vancouver Canucks players?
3. What's the best Canadian hockey team right now?
The answers range from hilarious to insightful to honest to downright di

The most common first name of those players who have played for the Victoria Salmon Kings is one whose meaning from the Gaelic is "little king." That name is Ryan and seven "little kings" have worn Salmon Kings colours. Ryan Finnerty, Ryan McLeod, Ryan Wade and Ryan Watson played in the early era of the franchise. Current assistant coach Ryan Wade scored the first ever Salmon Kings home goal on the afternoon of Sunday, December 5, 2004 at the Bear Mountain arena in his home town of Colwood. A tr
The Canucks finished November with a 8-4-1 record, but there was one game everyone had their eye on: Saturday, November 20, a nationally-televised matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks. While Chicago may have lost several pieces to Atlanta and other teams, they were still the team that had eliminated the Canucks two years in a row from postseason play. The Canucks were overcoming two straight losses, a tough 4-3 OTL in Buffalo, extending their winless streak at HSBC Arena to seven-plus years, a
During a recent NHL.com poll, Vancouver Canuck's Daniel Sedin was listed as the second best Left Winger in the NHL. Whether you agree with this ranking or not (at the quarter point in the 2010/11 season), there is evidence that he could possibly be in the hunt for hardware come late June.
Daniel Sedin focused early in the season at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California Oct. 13, 2010
With the disclaimer (yet again, after forecasting Henrik Sedin early on to win the Hart Trophy) th
We're a quarter way through the regular season and like any other NHL season, there's been plenty of surprises, both good and bad. Let's recap.
If you had told me the Flyers would finally unearth a top 15 netminder in Sergei Bobrovsky, they would've been my pick to win the Atlantic. Michael Leighton is skating again but both him and Brian Boucher would find an uphill battle to unseat the Russian netminder with a 12-3-2 record and sixth-ranked .926 SV% for goalies with at least 10 games played

During the last half dozen seasons, the Canucks have had a lot of reasons to cheer in November. Though this particular one started well, it seems to be taking a turn for the worst.
Imagine the setting: You've just returned home from a vacation to someplace tropical, hot. You've got everything queued up, and you breeze through Customs. As you head over to the luggage retrieval belts, you see the local sports channel replaying highlights from the hockey game you missed. The first boxscore

After tonights game i feel like were on the verge of something terrible. I mean, the play is disconnected, the players cant make a first pass, are they flu ridden or tired or what?? Is Ehroff trying to get traded? sign him or trade him he looks distracted out there The last 2 games of the eastern road-trip I noticed players like Malhotra skating badly, looking hurt and now this. Bieksa must go...what has happened in 3 years...he was the golden boy and now a bag of pucks is looking bette
The Canucks have just returned home from a moderately successful eastern road swing, picking up 5 out of a possible 10 points. What stood out to me was just how many Canucks fans there were in each of the arenas they played in during their trip.
In this Clay's Canucks Commentary, I offer some suggestions as to why the Canucks are so popular throughout the league. Take a look, and see if you agree or disagree with me.

One way of noting how successful an organization has become is the willingness of previous members to rejoin and contribute to the organization's further success. With a major offseason roster shakeup, Milan Gajic and Kiel McLeod were offered contracts and both signed on for a second tour of duty with the Victoria Salmon Kings. Milan Gajic played junior in his hometown of Burnaby with the Burnaby Bulldogs where a 98 pt season in 00-01 lead to four years in the NCAA with the Michigan Wolverines.
So I was lucky enough to be out east for the Toronto and Buffalo games this past weekend. I try and get out to the A.C.C each year, as I have good friends there, and by the time the boys make the trek, my airmiles account is usually ready to go...
I've done this a few times in years past, but for some reason, this season it occurred to me the similarities and differences between my day job, and my night job.

<img src="http://www.fan590.com/images/teams/NHL/All-Star-Logo_NHL-2011.jpg"class="imageFloatLeftFramed">The NHL just released it's 100-player All-Star Game ballot. And it's an absolute joke. I wonder why the NHL comes up with these lists anyway. It's chock full of players with big salaries but little talent. It's full of players whose best days are clearly behind them. There are so many snubs I don't even know where to begin. No one really cares that the captains get to pick their teams
