Realistic Replacements: Mason Raymond

A second line left wing. That is what Mason Raymond is, that is what the Canucks need. Raymond already a part of the team and a suitable role for that position, so it's natural the Canucks pursue resigning him. Raymond is going through arbitration now, because he feels he can fetch more dollars than what he was offered. The rumblings are that his agent will present a strong case for making upto 4 million per year. Is that worth his value? Should Canucks decide to walk away from him, let's

"You Can't Hold the Cards Forever"

During an interview with Ben Kuzma and Jason Botchford (from The Province) on Team 1040 Radio, Barry MacDonald spoke about Mike Gillis' cap room situation, and the Vancouver Canucks need to move Kevin Bieksa, soon. According to Team 1040 Radio, at least 6 teams are competing for the services of Kevin Bieksa (all photos courtesy of Yardbarker.com) With the somewhat surprising additions of Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard to the Vancouver defensive core, Kevin Bieksa looks to have played hi

The Devils Rejected

<img src="http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/ap/devils%20kovalchuk%20hockey--810173562_v2.rp350x350.jpg"class="imageFloatLeftFramed">Ilya Kovalchuk was all smiles and cracking jokes when he signed a record-breaking 17 year pact with the Devils for $102 million. Even with a declining Martin Brodeur and the future in net uncertain, by signing the Russian sniper the Devils look to remain playoff staples for the next decade. That all came to a crashing halt today. Kovalchuk is now stuck in lim

Lame Duck Bieksa

All things considered, Kevin Bieksa seems to be on the outside looking in. With the acquisitions of Dan Hamhuis and Keith Ballard the Canucks don't have enough room to keep everyone. Alex Edler and Christian Ehrhoff aren't going anywhere, so at $3.75 million Bieksa is a very expensive third pair defenseman. Salo, Hamhuis, and Ballard all have no-trade clauses. I imagine none of the three will be asked to waive those clauses and if asked would be unwilling. Ben Kuzma of The Province lists Anaheim

Some big signings, Summer Summit, and re-naming our building to Rogers Arena! Exciting times for sure. It is exciting for me as I am in Orlando, Florida for the 18th Annual Celebrity Mascot Games. This is my 8th consecutive Games which definitely makes me a veteran. I am the Captain of Blue T

Pity for Mitchell

In the same offseason that Commissioner Gary Bettman receives a pay hike to $7.23 M per, Willie Mitchell will receive less money because of Bettman's indifference. It's not easy being a Vancouver Canuck defenseman these days. In the 2009/10 season, the Canucks lost the most man games for blueliners. The competition arising from those stifling injuries is intense, with Keith Ballard and Dan Hamhuis being brought into the ranks. Willie Mitchell was hit from behind January 15th by Evgeni Mal

VICTORIA DOES ITS PART

Last Thursday, July 8, under a sultry late afternoon sun, a special event that aided a good cause and showed how much Canadians love hockey, in summer or winter. Inspired by "How Canadians were united by the Winter Olympics", Canucks blogger Richard Loat organized the Five Hole For Food tour. With the co-operation of professional and major junior hockey teams across the nation, street hockey games were organized that also encouraged those participating or watching to bring in donations for a

Lull Before the Storm

This year's free agent class is probably one of the weakest ones in recent memory but that hasn't stopped teams from throwing their money around. The majority of the signings have been great but others not so much (I'm looking at you, Darryl Sutter). Last year I made a note that Craig Anderson was a great signing by the Avs, although I have to say I didn't see such MVP calibre performances coming from him. He was dirt cheap and more than capable - you can't get any better than that. As usual the

Movement in the desert

As the drama that continues to be the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes ownership and possible relocation saga unfolds, another nasty little detail comes out 'in the wash' at the close of last month. While it took me a few days to collaborate some of the details surrounding the management issues, I realize that the release of Doug Moss as President and COO of the franchise (since 2002) is just another red flag as the team is paving the way now for the Ice Edge Holdings prospective ownership group

My July 6th 2010-11 Canucks roster predictions...

Ok, here's my best guess at the roster lineup for opening day, barring any unlikely additions, as well as my rationale. First off, I've had to concede a few assumptions or it gets too messy: - Bieksa and his $3.75 mil contract have to go in order for us to resign Raymond (which I believe we will do in the neighborhood of $2.5-$3 mil). - Cody Hodgson makes the team. - One-way contracts make the team, with the exception of Darcy Hordichuk. The team either trades him or sucks up his cont

Vancouver Canucks Free Agency Wrap-Up : Day 1 - TrevLinden16

TrevLinden16 here with a 12 year old's insight (mine) on day 1 of free agency for the Vancouver Canucks. I tried doing this in video form to post on my channel but its too awkward talking to myself in an empty room. First up center Joel Perrault was signed on a 1 year deal worth $510,000. He played for the Coyotes last season but only in 2 games. The rest was spent in San Antonio (AHL) and the Swiss league. Expect him to be a 4th liner replacing Ryan Johnson or a 13th forward.

Friesen uncovered

Alex Freisen will make this organization rhyme worth and mirth together down the road. The recent 6th rounder has won major awards at the Ontario Hcokey League level and this season was voted by popular decision (OHL coaches poll) as the league's Best Faceoff Man AND Hardest Working Player Kudos Alex. See my entire write-up on the kid entitled "The Frieght Unknown" Certainly NHL Central Scouting (he was not even on their listing) did not value him the way the Canucks did and it shows in

My Day at the NHL Entry Draft

First of all, I have to give a huge thanks to Sports Management Worldwide. They did everything first-class and I had a great time attending their hockey conference and the draft. I had the opportunity to meet a lot of great hockey people and network with them. At downtown Sheraton, there were a ton of people from the NHL, like Mark Recchi who just signed a one year deal with the Boston Bruins to continue a great career, several Nashville Predators scouts, Joel Quennville and David Poile. Black or White

Without a single pick in the first three rounds of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, due to the Keith Ballard trade, Canucks GM Mike Gillis was conscripted with a difficult task; make the most of five lower round picks and continue adding depth to a deepening prospect pool. The Canucks have seen steady improvement in the player development side of hockey operations, partly due to an increased number of staff assigned to the department, partly due to the strength of the teams farm teams, yet als

Draft day - interview about 2009 2nd rounder, Anton Rödin

Canucks fans and hockey enthusiasts...today is 2010 Draft Day in the NHL. One of the most exciting and optimistic days among fans and glorious and dicey among management. The perfect storm in Fandom. What we all want is solid information. Well, a whole year has passed since Vancouver selected Swedish winger Anton Rödin with the 53rd overall pick. He has had a year more of development and I took the opportunity to catch up with my Swedish hockey insider Johan Nilsson of EliteProspects.com . It

Swedish contingent headed to draft table

The Vancouver Canucks have often selected Swedish hockey players as part of the re-stocking process for the organization. Alexander Edler, the Sedins, Mattias Ohlund are all classic examples. The Canucks will most likely have to display a flair in the scouting department to bring in a nice catch this draft, with only one pick in the top 100 players. I caught up with a cohort of mine, Johan Nilsson of Elite Prospects (DOT COM), to get some insight from a Swedish perspective on some of

Gillis: "Happy With the Blueline"

During a recent interview, Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced that he is happy with the state of his defense corps, which he had better be: The Free Agent market has already lost one big player. The focus of the last Canuck Way (Dan Hamhuis) has been dealt for Ryan Parent to the Philadelphia Flyers... Who's next? During a recent interview with TSN, Gillis spoke to the Canucks 25th overall draft pick, and the potential for the team to move the pick, to address their lack

Five Hole for Food

Some of you may have noticed my absence from the blog lately, and it's because there's something very exciting in the works. I'm organizing an event called Five Hole for Food. I'm driving from Montreal to Vancouver playing road hockey in the two aforementioned cities as well as Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria, raising food for local food banks. The trip spans nine cities in eleven days and sees us start in Montreal on June 29th and ending in Vancouver on Jul

Yann Sauve detailed in newest article

I have gone over some of the details of Yann Sauve's development as he progressed with the Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL) this season. He had a strong playoff and is looking to join the Canucks, not the Manitoba Moose (AHL) come training camp. I have just joined this network but have written extensive articles on my website: www.chillerinstinct.com Vancouver's defense core may look the part of a wounded animal licking its wounds right now, but there is help on the way. Much of it is rejuve

If Canucks prospects were World Cup teams

I'm so glad the Stanley Cup Finals are over, it was difficult to get behind either team. On one hand cheering for the Blackhawks was like cheering for the kid in high school that stole your girlfriend. Cheering for the Flyers would be like cheering for the bully who beat you up and stole your lunch money. I just wanted both of them to make out with Mike Ricci and get mono. Regardless, i had to follow the finals as a true hockey fan...and i also didn't want anyone around me to know what i s

What could have been

Two of the most dynamic offensive superstars in the National Hockey League. Two young, All-Star defencemen patrolling the blue-line. A relatively unknown starting netminder but one who has shown an ability to stand on his head from time to time. A coach who is considered one of the best hockey minds in the League. All together on a team that just a few short years ago was immersed in a period best described as the franchise's Dark Age. <img src=http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/bc/images/images/i

Canucks Should Pursue Hamhuis

With Willie Mitchell's uncertain status within the Canucks organization, it's imperative the Vancouver Canucks make a play to obtain Dan Hamhuis during Unrestricted Free Agency. It was an extremely cold January day, back in Quesnel, BC in 2000. A friend of mine from work asked if I wanted to make the trip to Prince George that night to watch the Cougars play the Kamloops Blazers. There was certainly some trepidation on my part; it's a 250 km round trip to the Prince George Multiplex (since
