SALMON KINGS THIS WEEK---THE 2010 PLAYOFFS BEGIN

There was a real buzz around the concourse and in the concession lineups Saturday night. Was it the happiness of cheap tickets, a desire to be entertained, and the fact that the night before, with a huge win, the Salmon Kings guaranteed themselves a playoff berth? Needing a win on Friday night, and a total team effort this was accomplished. Along with a 5 point night by Matt Siddall and a hat trick by Wes Goldie, the team captain. Final score 9-2 and a playoff berth assured, as to which spot

30 Things... Down to the Wire

Hopefully everyone had a good Easter weekend. I know I did. It's also been awhile since my last post, and my sincerest apologies to my readers... however few of you there are (ha!). Anyway, if any of you ever get a chance to visit Atlantic Canada (not exactly the most exotic place, I know) be sure to visit Baddeck and Cape Breton. It's beautiful. But back to hockey. There's only a handful of games to go in the season and things are really starting to shape up. The East has been dominated by

Wild 3 - 4 Canucks OT/F - Game 79 - 04.04.10 Last night the Vancouver Canucks stepped on ice in hopes to lock up the North West division in back to back years. Their opponent was none other than the Minnesota Wild. As you may know, The Wild consider Vancouver their number one rival and they never ease up when these two teams meet. Back in the Canucks net was captain Roberto Luongo who was celebrating his 31st birthday. Happy birthday Roberto. For the Wild, Niklas Backstrom was given t

Number Crunching XVI: What If?

It is a contemplative week for Number Crunching as we look towards the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs for the 2010 Northwest Division Champions Vancouver Canucks. As part of our reflection, we take a trip down memory lane and revisit our mid-season award predictions and give our final thoughts on which Canucks should walk away this season with some hardware. Jordan Schroeder

From the day he was drafted to the day he was signed to a try-out contract with the Manitoba Moose, Canucks fans have been excited about the prospect of Jordan Schroeder one day making an impact in the NHL. Despite his 5'8” frame, Schroeder is very strong on the puck and isn't afraid to go in those dirty areas. With a disappointing finish to his college years in the NCAA, Schroeder has jumped into the pro leagues and is out there to make a name for himself. A year before the 2009 NHL Entr

Canucks 5 - 4 Ducks SO/F - Game 78 - 04.02.10

Canucks 5 - 4 Ducks SO/F - Game 78 - 04.02.10 After losing their last game in a atrocious way to the Los Angeles Kings, The Canucks looked to get back on track against the Anaheim Ducks. The between these two clubs ended in a one sided affair as the Canucks won the game 4 to 1. With five games remaining in the regular season, Vancouver needed a single point to clinch a playoff spot. Andrew Raycroft got the call to start in net for the Canucks and on the other end, Curtis McElhinney

Canucks Grab Redemption

After an abysmal 8-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night, the Vancouver Canucks left California early Saturday morning with some pride still intact. Michael Grabner had a real breakout game versus Anaheim, recording the 'natural' hat trick [three straight goals] (Photo by Jeff Gross/ Getty Images) The California swing was just that - Two games in two nights, both with large polarities in style, composition and execution. Thursday night in Los Angeles the Canucks fell into the ol

Luongo, Burrows, and the Sedins; our season thus far, and the playoffs ahead.

As a loyal Canucks fan, this season has been a thriller. The Sedins' production this season has been both electrifying and unforeseen. After a brilliant 28 goal campaign the season prior, Burrows follows up yet another career season riding shotgun with the twins. Kesler's play has continued to improve, and has shown the hockey world that he more than equal to Mike Richards. Christian Erhoff has been our top defenseman this season, quarterbacking our power play while playing solid hockey in our o

Reaching the End of the Line for Michael Grabner

After a strong nine game performance in November before injuring his ankle in a pre-game soccer warm up, there were high hopes that Michael Grabner would come back better than ever in his second call up and earn a full-time NHL roster spot. The hope was that Grabner could form a formidable second line with fellow speedsters Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler which would forcibly free up Mikael Samuelsson and Pavol Demitra to form a third scoring line with Kyle Wellwood in the middle. <img s

The Loss to the LA Kings is a Blessing in Disguise

The 8 to 3 loss that the Canucks suffered by the hands of the Kings last night is exactly what this team needed. Let's look back to when the Canucks faced-off against a young Blackhawks team in the United Center. Right from the get go, the Canucks poured on the pressure and they neutralized the Hawks on their home ice. Emotions ran high when broke out with gear and equipment spread all over the ice. Vancouver scored 4 goals and Roberto Luongo made 26 saves to match his career high with s

Antler Banter is back on Wednesday, and the Moose had two big games this week on Monday and Tuesday. Great Save (For) Luongo!

So Roberto Luongo has been getting it from all angles as of late and Saturday's game against the Sharks, an affair where he gave up 3 goals in a losing effort has ratcheted up the criticism. (Sidenote: I apologize for the lack of a Postscript for the San Jose game, I came down with something and was incapacitated for Saturday night/Sunday. Oops.) While I wasn't a fan of the Marleau goal (which came after a smart play from Rob Blake, forcing Alex Edler to turn over the puck) and thought he 'ran

Road Trip 2010

The Third Annual Salmon Kings Booster Club road trip to Boise, Idaho began the late afternoon of Wed, March 24th. Once our little convoy was assembled we were on board the BC ferry at 7 pm. Two hours later we passed the Peach Arch Monument and crossed into the United States of America. Bellingham would be the place where the comradeship that would forge us into a close knit band of brothers and sisters began. An unexpected tour of parts of Bellingham not on the tourist iternary took place as we

Coyotes 1 - 4 Canucks F - Game 76 - 03.30.10 Last night the Canucks went head to head against one of the leagues top teams, the surprisingly good Phoenix Coyotes. At least that's what most of the people think. Personally, I think that the Coyotes are extremely overrated and they'll be eliminated in the first couple of weeks of the playoffs. Don't get me wrong, their record says otherwise, but don't let that fool you. They have won 12 times out of 17 shootout attempts. Unfortunately for

Henrik's Eye for Art

With a convincing 4-1 win over the upstart Phoenix Coyotes, the Vancouver Canucks moved closer to accomplishing something they've never done before - having a major trophy winner. With 6 games remaining, Henrik Sedin has 104 points to lead the NHL in that category (Photo by Canadian Press/ Darryl Dyck) However coveted the Art Ross trophy (player to amass the most points in NHL in one season) may be, one of the contenders is downplaying it's importance. 7 games left. A well balanced line-up ahead

This is it boys and girls, the last 7 games of an 82 game schedule. "The playoff stretch", "now or never", "give it your all". Thankfully, the Nuckies have been handed a very well balanced last splash of games. Well balanced? Read on fellow blog readers. If a team who's heading into the playoffs has a lineup of playoff-less teams in the last stretch of games, it can do some major damage to a teams mentality. Let's use Edmonton for an example. The Oilers are way out of the playoff race, dea

Number Crunching XV: Being the Debbie Downer

It was a Debbie Downer sort of week in Canucks Nation with just one victory in three games to celebrate and Number Crunching continues with the theme by presenting the stats you'd least like to hear about. But of course we do have one bright spot and that's our Number Crunching Player of the Week Award, which figures to be a Ray of sunshine in an otherwise dreary week in Canuckland. Why You Needn’t Worry About the Vancouver Canucks

As we approach the playoffs, I can’t help but think about two things. First, I hope we don’t take a losing streak into the second season; and second, I keep telling myself Luongo will be at his best again come playoff time. I just have to start believing what I say. But there are other reasons as a faithful Canuck fan that has me grinning from ear to ear and it’s not just because of this season’s potential playoff run. As much as Mike Gillis is known for not making big trades, he is most

Only a matter of time for Grabner

The Austrian born forward, a top prospect for Vancouver, is finally getting some fluent ice-time; but people seem to be getting frustrated and impatient with him, which bothers me. Playing alongside Kesler, Grabner has been getting dozens of scoring chances, but the red light isn't lighting for him. Although his finishing skills are lacking, I'm really excited about the number 40. Still a young prospect and tons of time to learn and sharpen his play, finishing will catchup to his speed and ra
