Manitoba tangled with the Grand Rapids Griffins on the weekend before welcoming the Hamilton Bulldogs to Winnipeg for a couple of games. The Moose got some

Small Markets: Why the NHL needs them

I just had an epiphany. We as hockey fans constantly ask ourselves: why does the NHL keep teams in weak markets? It makes no sense to us. Why waste our beloved talent on the passionless, when there are plenty of enthusiastic, highly profitable hockey markets further north? The answer: the ownership situation. Pre-lockout, many owners were considering getting out of the market (i.e. selling their teams). Understandable. Why would any businessman want to be involved in a business in whic

Ray-croft! Ray-croft!

Those chants were sweet to backup Andrew Raycroft as they were to me. The premium in the playoffs is goaltending because every game counts and a game stolen by Roberto Luongo could mean the difference between winning and losing a series. Since coming back from the Olympic break Luongo has been faltering, including an absolutely abysmal performance in Edmonton two nights ago, so it's nice to see that the Canucks have at least found confidence in their backup goaltending, ending a goaltending caro

Ducks 1 - 4 Canucks F - Game 74 - 03.24.10

Ducks 1 - 4 Canucks F - Game 74 - 03.24.10 With only eight games to go in the 09-10 regular season, the Vancouver Canucks looked to collect as many points as they could to win the North West division. After a disturbing loss to the worst team in the league, the Canucks needed a good comeback game against the Ducks. Captain Roberto Luongo got the night off to rest up for the Sharks game on Saturday. In the net for the Canucks was Andrew Raycroft and on the opposite end, Jonas Hiller was

Split the last 8

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see Luongo is struggling with his game. You can just tell by the way he moves and his body movement that his confidence is just not there. What do you do about that? Sit him. Am I crazy? Umm, maybe...maybe not. There are 8 games left in the season. Playoffs looming in the horizon for the team. What's more important? What seed you get? Or having a rested, ready to go Olympian goalie? I choose the 2nd option, but that doesn't mean you can't have both.

Number Crunching XIV: There's something about Ryan

It was a good week in Canuck Nation if your name was Ryan and appropriately in this week's edition of Number Crunching, we pay tribute to the Ryans as we look back at the best and worst statistics in the week that was. Read on to find out who takes home this week's Number Crunching Player of the Week Award...could it very well be Ryan's for the taking? A shot through the heart? No, not really.

[You can see the original post with videos here] Tonight's <a href="http://canucks.nhl.com/club/recap.htm?id=2009021066">4-3 overtime loss </a>to the Red Wings had elements of a crushing defeat, but it wasn't really one. If there's ever a time to <a href="http://canuckpuck.com/2009/10/27/staying-medium/">stay medium</a>, this would be it; it's far too easy to get fired up about wins or disappointed about losses without considering them in the grand scheme of things. The League’s Best in a Canuck Uniform

<img src="http://www.vdbab.com/newsletters/images/vancouver2.jpg" alt="" /><br /> <br /> Is it any wonder Ryan Kesler just signed a long-term deal with the Vancouver Canucks worth 30 Million dollars over 6 years? Ok well, yes it is a lot of money for this Selke runner up, but what Canuck fan wants to see him play for another team?<br /> <br /> There is a fundamental reason why Kesler wanted to stay here. Vancouver is becoming one of the most popular cities in th

The Week That Was... [March 13th - March 19th

Welcome to the first installment of "The Week That Was..." presented by yours truly. This is one of my first blog entries, so it may not be as amazing as some of the others out there, but I will try my best to create a blog that appeals to everyone in more ways than one. -- March 13: Ottawa @ Vancouver Outcome: 5-1 W Goal Scorers: Ottawa: J.Speeza Vancouver: M.Samuelsson(2), A.Burrows, D.Sedin, S.Salo The Canucks first game back at GM Place after the extended road trip, an NHL rec

The Hockey Code

When I tell people I live and breathe hockey, one of the most common answers I get is: "You like hockey? Really!? It's so barbaric! They fight all the time!" In a way, it is true. Grown men on skates in post-whistle scrums hacking, pushing, shoving, punching, trash-talking, fighting. What most people don't understand, and most often than not it's because they've had very little exposure to the sport either by watching or playing, is that there is a "hockey code" involved. I once tried to expl

Making the Moves

So much for breaking off contract talks until the end of the season. Just two hours ago, the Canucks announced that they have re-signed RFA Ryan Kesler to a six-year contract worth $30 million. Mike Gillis has been awfully busy of late, first calling up Michael Grabner in light of Mikael Samuelsson's injury then signing Jordan Schroeder to an entry level contract after a finishing a disappointing sophomore year with the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Schroeder is likely to suit up Sunday for the

Prey No Longer

The Vancouver Canucks accomplished something rarely seen at GM Place Thursday night: A win over the San Jose Sharks. On a night made for anyone with 'Ryan' in their name, the Canuck power play came out swinging, and was the difference in a 3-2 win. Alexander Edler and Ryan Kesler each had a goal and an assist on the power play. Ryan Johnson scored the eventual game-winner, his first of the season, and first goal in 83 games. Ryane Clowe of the San Jose Sharks scored his 16th of the season, o

Sharks 2 - 3 Canucks F - Game 71 - 03.18.10 On this beautiful Thursday evening, the Vancouver Canucks looked to bounce back with a huge victory over the San Jose Sharks. The loss to the NY Islanders was a good wake up call for the Canucks and it should keep them on their toes and teach them not to take any team for granted. A struggling Evgeni Nabokov looked to continue his success in GM place and on the other end, Roberto Luongo was in net for the Canucks. Half way through the first

Where are they now? March 18, 2010

A scan of www.hockeydb.com indicates that 40 former Victoria Salmon Kings are still active players, with 27 in North American leagues and 13 overseas in Europe. Two defensemen, Shaun Heshka (San Antonio Rampage) and Travis Ramsey (Manitoba Moose) are patrolling AHL bluelines. Twelve exSalmon Kings are with other ECHL clubs. Olivier Labelle (Reading), Darryl Lloyd (Kalamazoo), Sean O'Connor (Ontario), Adam Huxley (Idaho), Dyan Yeo and Todd Ford (South Carolina), and Milan Gajic (Florida) provi

Keeping Kesler

The “Bull” is a nickname Ryan Kesler has had since joining the Canucks. Rarely is it used in conversation when talking about Kesler due to the fact that it is far from original, but it does have some meaning in terms of what is actually going on between the Canucks organization and Kesler’s agent. With both parties locking horns, it has left the Bull seeing red. "I love it here, I really do," Kesler said. "But it's probably unrealistic to say I'm going to stay in the same spot forever.”

Game Day Opinion - San Jose Sharks @ Vancouver Canucks

Who: San Jose Sharks Where: General Motors Place, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada When: March 18th, 2010 - 7:00 PM - TSN (HD) - Team 1040 Opinion: If bad defense plays a part in March 18th match-up, it will be a long way to 1st place in the Western Conference unless luck hits their side. The San Jose Sharks... who have 96 Points coming into play against Vancouver, will hope to avoid their 3rd straight loss on their marathon 6 game road trip... mind you, its not as long as Vancou

Bloodthirsty?

As we head towards Thursday night's match up between Boston and Pittsburgh I think we should talk about what's on everyone's mind—who's going to try to pummel Cookie into crumble? It's thrilling isn't it? Will it be Lucic or Thornton? Or maybe, oh oh, this is exciting, maybe Chara will come to defend Savard's honour and jackhammer the Cooker straight down into the ice. Yeah! It's actually very sad. As I've been listening to the cries of retribution from media and fans from around the lea

The Week That Was [Introduction]

Hey there CDC, It is ac7 here with a new motive that will help educate Canucks Fans across the world that cannot tune into every game about what has happened to your Vancouver Canucks. At the end of each week, I will blog about recent Canucks news, such as injuries, callups/sendowns, as well as a small summary of each game that occurred during that week. My first official blog will most likely come out this Friday, with a summary of all the games that have occurred, along with all trans

With back-to-back home games against Canadian NHL clubs, the Vancouver Canucks asserted their continued mastery over visiting rivals to GM Place. SALMON KINGS THIS WEEK----A WILD RIDE AHEAD AFTER THE IDES OF MARCH

Beware the Ides of March. Keeping in mind one of history's most famous warnings, no ECHL games were scheduled for March 15, 2010. Despite struggling in their home series with the league leading Idaho Steelheads, the Salmon Kings put on a highly entertaining show in the Saturday finale. They made a 5-3 loss a close game with hits and good plays that enthralled the fans. Newcomer Jeff Lynch scored his first ECHL goal and Scott Howes returned to active duty. Chad Painchauld's 61 points, leads th

Superstar Sedins

Who would have thought? The humble, identical twins from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden have become superstars in the the NHL and it's about time. They won't be replacing Ovechkin and Crosby as the faces of the NHL anytime soon, but their names should be up there with the greats in this league. They have been dominating the league with linemates Alex Burrows and Mikael Samuelsson. Henrik has picked up 93 points in 69 games, on pace for 111 points this year, and Daniel has 68 points in 51 games, and

A look at Henrik’s milestone filled season

This weekend was a big weekend for the Canucks, their fans, the record books and King Henrik himself. Henrik's play has been phenomenal this season. Even when "slumping" on the road he managed to pull things together on the tail end of the trip and end up at a point per game pace. His assault on the record books this year has been nothing short of impressive and here's a break down of what he's done.
