Blackhawks 1 - 5 Canucks F - Game 51 - 01.23.10
The Canucks got their chance to prove to the rest of the teams that they're among the leagues elite.
Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were in town and they were set for a showdown against the Vancouver Canucks.
Right off the puck drop, Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond had a chip on their shoulder as they were flying all over the ice.
After a successful penalty kill, the Canucks picked up the pace which got them rewarded.
Ryan Kesler's pass
Lots of talk being made about Edmonton radio personality Dan Tencer's postgame comments following the Oilers loss to the Canucks Wednesday night. Tencer, in what he described as his frustration taking over due to what was a poorly officiated game that saw some weak calls made against the Oilers (something which I did note and comment on in my postscript), commented that the Canucks have been mediocre and that their fanbase is cocky. Going the predictable route of an Oilers fan who is trying to w
One of the interesting aspects about Henrik Sedin suddenly being thrust into Crosby and Ovechkin's spotlight is that you have a number of puckheads trying to figure out why the sudden rise after nine seasons.
It's not as easy as you may think.
Take for instance the SI mention the other day about Hank being the magazine's mid-season player of the year. Farber suggested that, without Daniel around to finish the passes, Henrik essentially had to shoot more. Said Farber:
"While Henrik's goa

Stars 3 - 4 Canucks F - Game 50 - 01.21.10
After a nail-biting victory over the Oilers, the Canucks step up their game to defeat the Dallas Stars in regulation.
The Stars continue to struggle on the road as they dropped their tenth straight to the Vancouver Canucks.
The game turned out to be a physical affair as both teams lost a couple of players in the process.
Former Canuck coach Marc Crawford gave the nod to Alex Auld to start the game despite having a healthy Marty Turco on the
Even though the animosity on the ice between the Blues and the Canucks is real, it looks like upstairs in the front office it may be quite amicable. The Globe and Mail has recently reported that there is a potential deal in the works, with John Davidson having scouted the Manitoba Moose recently and Mike Gillis taking in the Blues-Habs game rather than the CHL Top Prospects game.

Today, the OHL announced that they have suspended Windsor Spitfires forward Zack Kassian 20 games for his hit on Barrie Colts forward Matt Kennedy. A little shameless plugging but I touched on the issue in my previous blog post.
I think this is an absolutely terrible ruling and that there is an obvious double standard here. I think David Branch's ruling just proved how much of a joke the entire process of disciplining a hockey player is. Scratch that, it's not a joke. It's a disgrace.

Last night (Jan 20), David Shantz, goalie for the Victoria Salmon Kings participated in his second ECHL AllStar game, this time as the starter for the National Conference. Born in Burlington, Ontario on May 5,1986, Shantz was with the nearby Hamilton Midget Reps in the 2001-02 season. He had impressed the scouts of the OHL Mississaugua Ice Dogs enough for them to select him 121st overall in that springs OHL Priority Draft. Before making the jump to major junior, he spent a year with the Thorold

It was brought to our attention by Icethetics.info in blog posts on both December 1, 2009 and December 3, 2009 that the Canucks may be switching to their modernized stick-in-rink jersey as their home jersey for the 2010-11 NHL campaign.
It's interesting to note that on Sunday at the team's annual SuperSkills event, Team Blue wore the team's third jersey feat
Canucks 3 - 2 Oilers F - Game 49 - 01.20.10
All I heard on the radio was how the Oilers had been struggling and they were looking to bounce back against the Canucks. It turned out that the reports were correct and the Oilers came out with a ton of pressure.
The Canucks players did not take the Oiler lightly as they fought right back.
Halfway into the first period, Sam Gagner took advantage of a weak line change as he shot the puck past Roberto Luongo for the 1-0 Oilers lead.
The hot
Well that was a little close for my liking but it's the results that count.
I can't help but feel sorry for Pat Quinn and the Oilers, but I can wait until their next game to see them end their losing streak.
The Canucks were looking pretty ordinary but there were some good individual performances. Edler stepped up his game nicely. I also want to give kudos to Sami Salo, not just for his clutch goal tonight but for his player over the last 2 months. The real improvement in Vancouver's play
This is pretty awesome. Reuters reports that Stanley Cup custodian Mike Bolt checked the trophy in at a New Jersey airport Sunday en route to Vancouver for a charity event, but Air Canada staff screwed up and sent it to Toronto by mistake. No word yet on if Brian Burke was involved, but who would put it past him?

It's been said that time is the great equalizer, and if you wound the Vancouver Canucks' and Edmonton Oilers' clocks back 25 years, the adage appears true.
This scene will most likely not repeat itself in Edmonton for many seasons
The year was 1985, and it was a cold, snowy January day in Quesnel, British Columbia. My mother, Marilyn, was busy preparing dinner in the kitchen as I watched the Vancouver Canucks host the Edmonton Oilers. I still remember the anxiety I felt watching the game,
Many in Vancouver have supported Henrik and Daniel Sedin for the past few years, but there was a time when they were widely derided as busts. Even after they started to excel, they still didn't get a lot of hype outside of Vancouver; one of the few exceptions is this piece James Mirtle wrote last spring about how the twins had quietly turne

Off the bat if it's not clear yet I'll let it out, I'm one of the biggest proponents to getting Kovalchuk at the deadline as a rental for this team.
When you look at Burrows numbers there's no denying that he's been a huge success because of the Sedins. One can't argue though that he's not been partially responsible in helping get up the Sedins numbers to point per game averages that are the highest of their career. Burrows has been through a lot to get where he is and after working his way up through the Ca

In a week where the Victoria Salmon Kings gave their fans some memorable moments in four home games, one goal will be long cherished as it made it as TSN's Highlight of the Night. Another memorable goal was the drag move that Olivier Latendress employed to finish the home stand with a shootout wining goal. Victoria opened the week by welcoming a new defenseman, Andy Rodgers. A four home sweep would move the Salmon Kings into a points tie for 2nd place in the National Conference. The schedule bro

While tuning into CBC to watch the Canucks take on the Penguins, I shortly became engrossed in a conversation with my fellow fans. One of them started discussing the water pressure in their house to a fellow handy-man. Being somewhat of a Tomboy, I decided that I needed to be a part of this conversation.
And then the unthinkable happened - the Canucks scored and I had missed the goal due to a conversation about water pressure.
