Burrows claims ref is out to get him

A bizarre subplot emerged from the Canucks' <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/predators-turn-back-canucks/article1427877/">3-2 loss to Nashville</a> tonight, with <b>Alex Burrows</b> <a href=http://communities.canada.com/theprovince/blogs/whitetowel/archive/2010/01/12/alex-burrows-accuses-nhl-ref-of-having-a-personal-vendetta.aspx">claiming</a> [<b><a href=http://www.twitter.com/botchoncanucks">Jason Botchford</a></b>

Mister America

It may not be the most highly anticipated game during the Olympics, but there is sure to be lots of talk when Team Canada meets Team USA on Olympic ice in Vancouver. And when the puck drops between these two juggernauts, Ryan Kesler will become Team Canada's number one enemy. It's been well documented and recorded that before this year, the only time that Team USA had defeated Canada in the World Juniors was when Kesler was on that team in 2004. Kesler will have a rare opportunity to make

Henrik Sedin, Hart Favorite

Kent, he of the We Are All Canuckleheads Podcast, is looking like a genius right now. I say this because he was one of the first people I saw making a case for Henrik Sedin for the Hart Trophy. Talk of Henrik being a favorite for the Hart trophy picked up steam earlier this week with an article from Michael Farber over on Sports Illustrated's website (scroll down about midways) who named Henrik Sedin as his pick for the Hart Trophy. (Incidentally, no mention or love for Kesler in the Selke c

SALMON KINGS THIS WEEK JAN 11,2010

A split with Idaho, recognition from the ECHL, call ups to the AHL, and the addition of a new player were the main events this past week for the Victoria Salmon Kings. For a second time, David Shantz was named ECHL Goaltender of the week. Along with rookie d-man Taylor Ellington, Shantz has been selected to play in the upcoming ECHL All-Star Game. In mid-week, Ellington was recalled to the AHL Manitoba Moose, then two days later, another d-man, Jimmy Sharrow was loaned to the Moose. Sharrow

Another Burrows hat trick, another Luongo shutout, another CHB giveaway

Earlier today, Jason Botchford (Vancouver Province) suggested the Sedin-Sedin-Burrows line was the second coming of the Westcoast Express line. Scratch that, he said that they are even better than the original. The trio have played 57 games together going back to last winter. In those 57 games, the line has combined for 73 goals and 119 assists for 192 points. That's 3.37 points a game and is a pace which outdistances the best line in Canucks history. At its peak in 2002-03, the West Coast

Number Crunching VIII: Hat Trick Edition

In the Canucks locker room, they ought to be calling Alex Burrows "The Joker" after all the tricks he played last week. But here on Number Crunching, we're not joking around when we dedicate this week's blog to the hat trick hero himself. Read on to find out who takes home this week's coveted Number Crunching Player of the Week Award (as if you didn't already know). "Nasty tone"

In the third period of Saturday's match between the Canucks and the Calgary Flames, CBC Commentator Mark Lee described the game as having a "Nasty tone". Rick Rypien vs Brandon Prust - Part I (AP Photo / The Canadian Press, Darryl Dyck) Particularly in the third period did both teams dish out physical punishment. Both coaches, Alain Vigneault and Brent Sutter, regularly dispatched their third and fourth lines, trying to match brawn. In a couple of instances, the result brought most players o

How Much?

I'm convinced that the Calgary Flames took a page from so I really wonder how much the Calgary Flames gave veteran referees Bill McCreary and Stephen Walkom before the game. The problem tonight with the NHL's inconsistent reffing wasn't the fact that there were a lot of phantom or soft calls, but rather that they didn't call anything. It's one thing to let the game play on without any sort of stoppages, especially a match-up as crucial as this one, but it's totally another to let the lack

Move over, Petri

Burrrr! Hot out there tonight!

It may be a good thing for Team Canada that Alex Burrows was not born in Sweden. What amazing chemistry he has with the twins! He complements Daniel and Henrik, so well. Just imagine if Vigneault never had the epiphany that led him to put Burr with the twins. Although the way AV has juggled lines in the past, I guess he was bound to put them together at some point (which reminds me, AV sure doesn't juggle like he used to -- but why would he do that now?) Hat tricks in consecutive games is pretty

Luongo's Upcoming Time Off

Listening to the TEAM 1040 show this morning, I caught a couple of callers noting that they didn't think that Roberto Luongo was a 70-game goalie and that the guy would get burned out towards the end of the season if the Canucks didn't sit him for a few games, and let Andrew Raycroft get some time on the ice. Fair enough. But did anyone remember that there's this tournament coming up in the middle of February, which is going to give most NHL players a bit of a break? Sure, Luongo's going to

Woo Woo Woo, You Know It!

So the Canucks are set to play their first home game after going on the road for four. Since we'll be seeing a game in GM Place, chances are good we should be hearing a now familiar sound should the Canucks score a goal. I am, of course, talking about the Woo. Started up by the Canucks sound guy, DJ Dave, the 'Woo' was apparently some sort of in-joke involving a soundboard based off of 'Runnin' With The Devil' by the David Lee Roth fronted version of Van Halen. Despite widespread belief, it'

You Can't Spell It Without Him

Note: This is a slighty older entry from my blog, but I was invited to come here and contribute in the Fan Zone, so I'd figure I'd go the lazy route for my debut and go with reruns. The stats are a little off because I had written this prior to the Dallas game. That said, enjoy! So we're officially at the midway point of the season. We have a relatively solid understanding on how things look right now in the NHL. For the Canucks, things are looking good, as they're starting to carv

Sweet Swede Swagger

I have to admit that I was never quite convinced that the Sedins could carry this team. First, there were naysayers that their offensive success had come because opposing teams' top defensive pairings regularly drew the famed West Coast Express. After Todd Bertuzzi was shipped off to Florida, Brendan Morrison signed with Anaheim, and Markus Naslund left for Manhattan before retiring, there is no higher scoring duo than Dan and Henrik. Since the lockout, Henrik is ranked among the top five playma

Number Crunching VII: Happy New Year Edition

The turn of the calendar provides an opportunity for some reflection so this week's column (our seventh edition for those keeping count...ever wonder why I never numbered them before? Seems a bit silly) looks back on the best of December, reveals the true meaning of a New Year's Bash, and counts down a list of those we have forgotten over the past decade.
