Canucks improving, slightly

The injured players are mostly back, but there were games where the players look one step behind and without initiative that makes you feel pessimistic and switch to other forms of entertainment. At least Gillis was able to voice a similar opinion and maybe it had an effect. Their record now is 19-14-0, riding on a current 3-game win streak. Or maybe because they're currently playing at home. The Wonder Twins magic is intact. What's more, Burrows is thriving again with them. Henrik 2nd in po

Game Day - Ducks @ Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks look to avenge a lopsided side loss from earlier this season as they host the Anaheim Ducks tonight at GM Place. While the Canucks are riding a three-game home winning streak, the Ducks are sitting in last place in the Western Conference. Hopefully for Canucks fans, this game will see a much different result than the first meeting between the tw

Looking For a Scape Goat: Vigneault

Through all the ups and downs this season there haven't been very many constants. We've had a mismatch of players, we've been short staffed on forwards, blue liners, goaltenders. We've had a hot power play, a cold penalty kill. We've signed ECHLers, played with the waiver wire, and the only thing that's remained constant in the first 33 games of the season is Alain Vigneault

Team Canada Watch - December 15

In light of Steve Yzerman's comments that the selection progress is an ongoing one, I think it's about time I trim this list down. There will still be key battles down the stretch, including questions regarding Mike Green, Drew Doughty, Steve Stamkos, Brad Richards, and co. Players I don't think have any shot at all anymore will be eliminated. GOALTENDERS 1 (2) Martin Brodeur, NJ (3-win week means he's fast past the post with 20) 2 (1) Roberto Luongo, Van (six wins in past eight starts, ou

Speed Kings

Ryan Kesler and Mason Raymond proved a formidable, speedy duo with both recording a goal and an assist against the surging Los Angeles Kings. The Los Angeles Kings touched down at YVR looking to accomplish something they hadn’t done since 1980: Earn points in 9 straight games. Unfortunately for them, they would take off early Tuesday morning from Vancouver International failing to duplicate the feat. The Vancouver Canucks skated to a 3-1 victory over the Western conference leading Kings M

No Place Like Home!

My Unsung Hero of the game is, once again, Alex Burrows. He wasn't in on any of the scoring but he was clutch at a potentially pivotal point in the game. In the latter part of the 1st period, the Canucks were down two men short for about 45 seconds. The first PK unit was Kesler-Mitchell-Burrows who usually get the nod to defend a 5-on-3. Burrows made two extra-effort plays to get the puck out of the zone and thwart the Kings' opportunity to tie up the game. It was 1-0 at the time and the soon af

Game Day - Kings @ Canucks

The league's best home team host the Western Conference's best overall team as the Canucks host the Los Angeles Kings tonight at GM Place. The Canucks play their third game of their current eight-game home stand, and are perfect so far with 2 wins and no losses. Tonight's test will certainly be the biggest challenge yet, as the Los Angeles Kings sit atop the Western Conference standings and are the NHL's hottest team, going 8-1-1 in their last ten games. The Canucks have had a lot of suc

A Year Difference

Steadfast Sauve developing well with QMJHL's Sea Dogs You can't blame anyone if they don't immediately recognize the name Yann Sauve; even if they're die-hard Canucks fans. After all, when the Canucks drafted Cody Hodgson 10th overall in 2008, the Brampton Battalion star was immediately the talk of the town and still is, despite having failed to make the big club two years in a row. Yann Sauve was Vancouver's 2nd round pick in 2008 Yet while the same could be said for Yann Sauve, it

Early Sedin Christmas

Henrik Sedin posted three assists during a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild Saturday to earn his 500th point as a Vancouver Canuck. Alex Burrows was quick to point out his adoration of the set-up twin. “Every play he’s so smart. Every time he gets it he’s finding ways to get it to the shooter, he sauces it through sticks or finds lanes to make the play and whether its on his forehand or backhand he’s able to make tape-to-tape passes.” The Canucks opened the game like race horses out of the

Taming the Wild

This was a hard one to pick an unsung hero for. The Wild actually outplayed the 'Nucks in most facets of the game tonight -- especially faceoffs. But having a clutch goaltender is allowed and this game was what it means to have a goalie steal the game. It wasn't a shutout and it wasn't Luongo's best game of the season but there were many big saves that had he not made them, the Canucks would've been on the losing end of this one. Though heroic, Luongo's performance wasn't unsung. My Unsung H

TEDDY BEARS WITH ELVIS IN THE BUILDING

Deja vu, as Yogi Berra would say, is looking backwards. The Victoria Salmon Kings experienced just that, as on the third consecutive night, the visiting opposition scored first. With Scott Howes in "the sinbin", the Las Vegas Wranglers struck when forward #22 Chris Neiszner closed the deal. With the crowed eagerly anticipating showering the SOFMC ice surface with Teddy Bears,

Game Day - Wild @ Canucks

Can the Vancouver Canucks build on a great start to their eight-game home stand? They'll try tonight as they host hated division rival Minnesota Wild tonight at GM Place. The Canucks kicked off their lengthy home stay with a decisive win over the visiting Thrashers Thursday night. Vancouver played a solid, all-around effort and should look to duplicate that tonight. The Canucks still have room for improvement, as they took a quick succession of penalties in the first period, allowing the Thras

Both teams looked sharp and ready to play as they took to the SoFMC ice. Daniel Sedin: the Natural

Tired of being spectators while their previous two opponents had hat-trick goal scorers, the Canucks went out and got their own. The Atlanta Thrashers dropped their 2nd straight game to Northwest division foes after a loss in Calgary on Tuesday. Ondrej Pavelec was busy for Atlanta, facing 15 shots in the second period, and 16 in the third, for a total of 38 on the night. Daniel Sedin, with a little bit of luck, recorded the Canucks' second hat trick of the season (his brother had one whil

The Latest on Alex Edler's Injury: Out Two Weeks; and Michael Grabner

This means Mathieu Schneider will get back into the lineup after being a healthy scratch. Defenceman Aaron Rome could have his two-week conditioning stint to the Manitoba Moose end early as well.
