Off Key in Nashville

For the second consecutive road game, the Vancouver Canucks proved 3 is their unlucky number, as yet another hat-trick proved their downfall. Despite a couple of individual standout performances by the Canucks, the team as a whole was unable to show the kind of finish that wins hockey games. The edge in special teams went to Nashville, who registered two goals on five power play opportunities. The Canucks were only able to score once in their five chances, but were successful once they establ

Team Canada Watch - December 8

Another week, another countdown. Expect the races to get heated especially after Steve Yzerman announced that the team will be announced on December 30th, moving it up one day. Brian Burke has announced that he will be picking his Team USA too, as just for kicks I've done so as well. GOALTENDERS 1 (3) Roberto Luongo, Van (best Canadian goalie this week: 2-0, 1 SO, .970 SV%) 2 (1) Martin Brodeur, NJ (NJ now division leaders with 103rd SO but 5 GA vs. Luongo) 3 (2) Marc-Andre Fleury, Pit (g

Moves Coming?

John Stevens' firing from the Flyers may be the move that will set off a series of changes to some NHL teams. The recent struggles of the Blue Jackets has Ken Hitchcock reportedly in the hot seat along with the Blues' Andy Murray. While both the Ducks and Leafs have been off to rather disappointing starts, Randy Carlyle and Ron Wilson may also be on the hot seats although their respective GMs have publicly stated that roster changes will be made before the head coach gets the ax. Players such as

Canucks Caught in Cole's Hurricane

The Vancouver Canucks waited until the third period to play meaningful hockey against the worst ranked team in the NHL, and that gamble cost them two points. Erik Cole of the Carolina Hurricanes missed 10 games in October with a broken leg, but seems to have recovered well. Though one goal was rather a fluke, with Willie Mitchell unknowingly kicking the puck into the net behind Andrew Raycroft, Cole played and skated with determination. "It could have been four or five (goals) tonight," s

Number Crunching

A 5-3 loss in Carolina on Saturday left most of the Canucks Community shaking their heads. This week's Number Crunching will have you shaking your head again...in a good way of course! Read on to find out who takes home this week's coveted Number Crunching Player of the Week Award. Nine Days and Inspiring A Triple Threat

December 10 to the 19th, nine days with six home games against Las Vegas and Stocton that may see the latter days of 2009 determine the fate of the Salmon Kings in early April 2010. Having gone winless on the Nevada/Ontario swing, the upcoming pre X-mas schedule means six games against opponents the capital city crew are chasing for one of the two remaining playoff spots. Sunda

Hurricanes 5 Canucks 3

I'm new at this, so bear with me and feel free to pull your punches at first. My objective with this blog is to share observations, opinions and thoughts on the Canucks that you might not get elsewhere. I'll try to point out that unnoticed play in the game that ended up pivotal or significant. I'll try to recognize the 'Nucks that are quietly contributing, improving their game or perhaps getting away with things they shouldn't. I'll also name an Unsung Hero for every game. That may be the player

The Final Game

No the title does not refer to a game on December 21, 2012, but to a quirk in the ECHL schedule that sees the last game between the Salmon Kings and the Ontario Reign taking place on Sunday (Dec 6). In the seven games so far, Victoria has a lead with 4 wins to the Reign's 3, plus have outscored the LA King affiliated squad 17 to 13. Three of the Salmon King victories were home

Edler's Confidence Resparks His Game

Edler was under fire at the start of the season for lack of production and after going through a slump which I attribute to him missing Ohlund, he's found his groove again and gone back to playing like we've come to expect of the native Swede. Edler who was taking bad shots, missing outlet passes and blowing routine blue line saves struggled to find his game early on and a v

Plus Minus Tells The Tale

Having attended a hard fought Jr B game, I watched the hilights from Las Vegas on tv, and had a close look at the game summary on the ECHL website. For a brief moment the Salmon Kings gained the lead in the third period, only to see the Wranglers come back and round up a 7-5 victory. What struck me was the total team plus/minus which if my calculations are correct ended up with

Taking Your Lumps

It shouldn't surprise anybody that Cody Hodgson was named to the shortlist for Canada's World Junior squad. The Brampton Battalion star was a late cut from the Canucks' training camp this year after suffering a bulging disc (he played more than 100 games last year) and had trouble keeping up with the NHL speed. A favourite to make the team, no one took the demotion harder tha

Turning Point this Season, or Inconsistency?

After last night's display of near perfection in New Jersey the Canucks look to have finally gelled and found that team chemistry they have been looking for all season. The Canucks managed to stay afloat while battered and bruised, but it looks like all the hype from the off season is finally coming true. The Canucks are playing as a team and all facets of the team are opera

Two Is Better Than One

Two is better than one. That applies to most things in life and the Sedins have certainly proved that as of late. I've always known the Sedins were good. Anytime a player can produce at a point per game rate for the regular season and the playoffs, play in over 300 straight games, and lead your team be it at the NHL level or the international level you know he's good. Canucks Beat Devils (Not Luongo Beats Brodeur)

Last night's game between the Devils and the Canucks was just that – a regular season NHL game. It wasn't a "showdown" between Roberto Luongo and Martin Brodeur to see who should be the starting goaltender for Canada in the Olympics. It was an opportunity to see two of the best goalies in the game facing off against each other. Nothing more. Nothing less. Hell, the way the game start

Wait Till Xmas

The bandwagon's been restless lately. With the Canucks play feeling at time like it's taking one step forward and two steps back, this city with such high expectations unrealistically subconsciously expects the team to go 82-0-0 and sweep the playoffs every season. I guess they miss the memo every year. With that in mind, the Canucks have been playing .500 hockey as of late.

Grocery Store

Okay, just to keep everyone clear, leaving your basket of groceries on the floor in the checkout line while you go finish shopping does not reserve your place in line. Those are just abandoned groceries. If you think I'm going to stand behind your stuff with my heavy basket while you wander the aisles for last-minute impulse buys, forget it. In fact, since I'm pretty sure salvage laws apply in this case, I'm much more likely to scan through your basket to see if there's anything in there I m
