My Gratitude to your organization!

The boy is all Canucks!

It's too bad other sports celebrities can't show this distinct level of class and selfless act of kindness.

I had the opportunity to buy tickets in late December to see my team (Red Wings) take on my sons team (Canucks) and more important, an opportunity for my son (then 11) to see Roberto Luongo from seats purchased at the glass behind the Canucks net in the first and third period.

Being from London ON., the drive from the house the the Joe is about 2 hours and having taken the afternoon off work and my son out of school for the afternoon, we arrived in Detroit late afternoon on March 23. With time to pass, we saw the Canucks team bus arrive at the Joe Louis arena and with hope of my son being able to see the players as they departed the bus and entered the rink.  Completely without hesitation and nothing short of first class, many of your Canucks organization made their way to where my son was standing tall and proud in his Canucks jersey and hat holding his homemade sign supporting your team. Naturally, even a gesture his way would have sent my son over the moon however many of the players greeted my son, signed his poster and hat - even today, I'm speechless!

With no disrespect to the team or any one individual player, the very thought of my seeing Mr. Luongo in person let alone meeting him eclipses' anything I could have imagined, nor my sons wildest dreams - literally!  His bedroom is Canucks and Roberto Luongo (ironically, they also share the same birthdate - weird).  Pictures taken that afternoon and printed now surround the poster, along with the game tickets and the program from that evening, in a frame behind glass.  The hat ($51.00 I might add) I'm told will never again be worn.

In closing; I think it's important to share this story with you, all of you that support your Vancouver Canucks team.  The story shared has been recounted many times with family and friends, all are astounded at the class your team had shown to one little boy that simply would have wanted nothing more than a wave from even one player, let alone so many! As a single father, my sons Mother (my wife) passed away 3 weeks before our sons 3rd birthday, I couldn't have given my son a better gift.  I would have paid $5000.00 for those seats had I known the evening would roll out and conclude in the manner in which it did. I simply could never have given my son the 'gift of time' your players had shown one boy - (I might add, a sell out crowd at that game, and my son was the only fan (Canucks or Red Wings) there to greet the bus).

Naturally as a Red Wings fan myself, I would have liked a different final score, as a Father of a boy who cheers for the Canucks, the day, nor the final score could not have been any better.

My deepest and sincere gratitude to your organization and the team.  Best of luck in the upcoming playoffs and congratulations on winning the Presidents Cup!

PS.  If I can figure a way to post some of those memorable pictures, I will certainly share with all.

Love your story Garth! What a great read.. As I'm a single father of an 11yr. old Canucks fan also, I'm so glad that it worked out for your son like that. Yes, they're a pretty special team now that G.M. Mike Gillis has taken over. One of the most important things he looks for in a player, is their personality.. What kind of person they are on the inside. They can be a great player, but if they don't have it going on upstairs, then he doesn't bother trying to sign them. Take care, (I like your team also) and good luck in the playoffs! (until the west final, that is)! ;o) Dave. Chilliwack, B.C.
