Nonis Talks to Benning and Linden

When the Canucks played against the Oilers on Friday night, there was another Canadian team making a presence in the Edmonton building. GM Dave Nonis was also in attendance at Rexall Place in the Alberta Capital, and speculation is already running rampant in Leaf land.

Nonis was seen talking with Canucks GM Jim Benning as well as Canucks President Trevor Linden. This on the heels of an embarrassing loss at home for the Leafs who fell 4-1 to the Detroit Red Wings.

The toxic fan base in Toronto is continuing to show their displeasure on what looks like another losing season. A leafs jersey thrown on the ice after the game against the Wings represents the distaste of a team that is looking for similar answers as the Oilers.

The questions is, why was Nonis talking with the Canucks brass?

Well, from another blog writer out of Edmonton, it's believed they were speaking of a trade that would involve a couple Canucks roster players and a prospect for a few of the Leafs roster players and a high draft pick.

Nonis is in the market for a puck moving defenceman. Currently Toronto boasts a fairly week back end, with no real potential candidates to step up.

Toronto Maple Leafs Defence:

Phaneuf - Gardiner

Franson - Robidas

Polak - Reilly

7th D - Percy

The talk between the two teams, which is more just a beginning point in potential negotiations could see a trade that would help both teams. The Maple Leafs could be looking for a trade that would include Alex Edler, Eddie Lack and Frankie Corrado in exchange for Nazem Kadri, Jake Gardiner, goalie James Reimer and a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick.

Yes Edler would have to agree to the trade, but it is not out of the question. The Canucks were able to move Jason Garrison who has spoken out since, saying he really did not want to leave the Canucks organization. His wife is currently working in BC making TV shows, and Garrison is from BC. He spoke with TSN 1040, saying he was not happy to leave the Canucks, especially after such a difficult year.

Dave Nonis is not flying out to Edmonton to meet with his counterparts just to see how they are doing in their new roles. No. There is a reason Nonis is talking to them, especially when you consider how much his Maple Leafs team is struggling.

Keep in mind, he has a coach in Randy Carlyle who just signed an extension. Nonis is on the hot seat with Toronto President Brendan Shanahan and will need to pull the trigger on a move to prove his worth to the club. For Nonis, doing nothing will surely end in his demise in the centre of the hockey universe.

What trade would you like to see the Canucks make with the Maple Leafs?

Joffery Lupul. Apparently he was close to being dealt at the deadline to LA for Toffilio, but the Kings decided to trade for Gaborik instead. Not sure what the price would be for Lupul though, the leafs would probably want something significant. Maybe Matthias + Gaunce + 2nd?

Sedin - Sedin - Vrbata

Lupul - Bonino - Burrows

Higgins - Vey - Kassian

Hansen - Richrdson - Dorsett

I'd perhaps consider the above mentioned deal if that were Reilly(not Gardiner). Really don't want to deal Lack, for their junk.

Still don't think I'd do this, unless we got a Leafs 1st rounder..Hell with them, after the games DN played, at deadline.

Overpay, or go pound salt.

Nope wouldn't want that deal at all. Unless we replace Kadri with Lupul... Kadri already has an unbelievable sense of entitlement about him and he's hardly accomplished anything in this league.

Why would we want any player from an entitled loser franchise?

I think a trade between Nonis and MacT is far more likely.

omg are you kidding bro. edler lack and are only defense ready prospect corrado. for a 2 nd line center a scratched dman in gardiner and a sieve of a goalie hell i wouldnt even trade edler alone for that package. but id trade edler and hansen and markstrom and a second for jvr and reilly your deal is absurd

Why it does and doesn't matter that Nonnis talked to Benning

It doesn't matter because Benning and Nonnis have never won the cup, so there absence of that knowledge renders their conversation to complete insignificance if you attach to their conversation that in some way this conversation would help the Canucks win the Stanley Cup.

Why it does matter, is that is shows that Nonnis and Benning are working together to better their chances at winning the stanley cup.

Nonis's son plays junior hockey for the Kings in Powell River. Was out for a visit.

You do know that PR is on the coast of BC, not in Alberta right.

I would rather have Gardiner over Edler, Lack and Reimer are a wash and those players cancel out salary more or less.

It wouldn't make sense to move Corrado as we are sorely lacking in defensive depth. Love him or hate him, Kadri is an elite level 2nd line player.

Kadri - Bonino - Burrows is a very good 2nd line

Moving Higgins on the Vey line over Richardson makes them so much better, other than weakness on faceoffs.

Really don't know why they could need another P.M.D. If anything they should look to upgrade with guys who can limit the damage done against them. There's 4 if not 5 puck-movers in that group, and I'd only count Polak as a defensive D-man.

Phaneuf - Gardiner

Franson - Robidas

Polak - Reilly

7th D - Percy

Benning never won a cup? What was he doing in Boston.

I take Kadri, probably for deal involving Bonino however, not that Bonino isn't god, but Kadri plays with attitude.

We could use a guy like that.

I trust Benning to what is good for the team, but that (proposed trade) ain't it. We don't really need a trade but if we can snipe an underperforming talent then why not?

However, I don't think that trading away TWO defensemen is a good idea as we're a bit thin on defence as it is.

I don't like what terrible.dee is suggesting: I much prefer Bonino over Kadri. I prefer calm consistent performance over flightiness. Kadri has some skills, and he does play with some "edge" but for my money he goes over that edge too often.

There's still some good players on an underperforming Leafs team and so maybe there is a deal to be had. And I think that their draft picks are going to be worth more than ours. However, Nonis is in a desperate situation and we aren't. There's no reason to make a trade just to make a trade or to help Nonis, it has to help our team. I'm confident that Benning knows that though and I'm glad that fans don't get to make trades.
