Taming the Wild

Unsung Hero

This was a hard one to pick an unsung hero for. The Wild actually outplayed the 'Nucks in most facets of the game tonight -- especially faceoffs. But having a clutch goaltender is allowed and this game was what it means to have a goalie steal the game. It wasn't a shutout and it wasn't Luongo's best game of the season but there were many big saves that had he not made them, the Canucks would've been on the losing end of this one.

Though heroic, Luongo's performance wasn't unsung. My Unsung Hero for tonight is Ryan Kesler. Yes, he got the "game-winning goal" but I'm giving him the nod for the effective and tenacious job he did on Mikko Koivu and his line tonight -- keeping them off the scoresheet. Koivu did slaughter Kes in the faceoff circle just as the Wild team did as a whole. But Kes helped keep the dominance to that. Other observations:

- The way they look right now, do you think both Sedins might be headed for 100 point seasons had Daniel not been injured? Henrik's currently on pace to get 102 points. The key to him shattering his career best and staying near the top of the league is for him to continue to shoot like he was while Daniel was injured and like he did late last season. With Burrows and both Sedins scoring, the top line is truly lethal.

- O'Brien got lots of props tonight on HNIC. He deserves credit for how he played that 3 on 1 that ultimately led to the Hnidy goal. Isolating Havlat the way he did was the best thing he could do. It was only due to Havlat's brilliant move that a goal resulted.

- I've been loving the energy and effort from Hansen since his return. Does anyone remember how he was just an afterthought in the preseason? With all the Shirokoff hype no one figured Jannik would have a spot and no one seemed to care. I wouldn't want to be without him now.

- I loved the unsportsmanlike call on Boogard when he fell over after being brushed by Bieksa. The diving in the NHL drives me crazy, even when the Canucks do it, which they do. These are supposed to be the best players in the world and it's pathetic when they got knocked down by the slightest contact. I'd like to see more calls like that even if some go against the hometown team.

- When Sami Salo's shot hit Zanon in the face it seemed like the first hard point shot Sami's taken all season. I know it can't be but let's hope we see him wire it like that a little more often now.

The next game up is against the top team in the Western conference -- yes, that's the LA Kings, believe it or not.
