After the worst summer lineup in recent memory, this week’s returns of Heroes and House couldn’t have come any sooner for fans of the small-screen.

Unfortunately for me, my PVR didn’t record either one.

Power outage? Nah. Cable glitch? Not quite.

No, my PVR didn’t record anything because it’s still stuffed full with last season’s Canucks games.

<a href="http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/images/upload/2007/07/jul2307_luongo10_b.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/images/upload/2007/07/jul2307_luongo10_t.jpg" align="right" border="0" hspace="4" vspace="1"></a>My collection traces all the way back to October 27th when the Canucks defeated Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Ovechkineers 3-2 in a shootout.

The shootout, evidently, held a special place in my PVR’s heart, as wins in the breakaway competition over Dallas and Florida in early January also quickly became mainstays.

But at least most regular season games aren’t broadcast in high definition. Because as the three people who actually understand what I’m talking about will attest, nothing clogs up a PVR quite like HD programming.

The same kind of HD programming that rears its pretty little 1080i-head for practically every single playoff game.

How can one be expected to choose between keeping Henrik Sedin’s quadruple-overtime goal against Dallas or Dany Sabourin’s three-minute trial-by-fire in Anaheim? It can’t be done!

But to try and help answer that question, I’ve developed a set of rules that explain when it just might be time to delete those precious Canucks recordings from your PVR.

1) When the Canucks lose.

Sure, that was an amazing glove save that Luongo made to keep the team from falling behind 3-0. But that doesn’t mean you should waste valuable PVR space on a game your boys ultimately couldn’t pull out, especially when that space could just as easily be used to repeatedly watch Stewie Griffin pummel Brian with a golf club. Delete.

2) When the game really didn’t mean that much.

A regular season shootout victory over a non-conference rival may be exciting in the heat of the moment but in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that important. Delete.

3) When the game features only one highlight.

Taylor Pyatt’s OT goal in game 3 in Dallas was huge. Really huge. Anson Carter’s ego-huge. But can you remember anything else from that game just off the top of your head? I don’t think you can. Delete.

4) When your friends are tired of watching your Canucks recordings.

If your buddies are sick of you trotting out footage of a Trevor Linden game-winning goal… get new buddies. But if that fails, it might be a sign that the recording has lost its effectiveness. Delete.

<a href="http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/images/upload/2007/07/jul2607_morrison08_b.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/images/upload/2007/07/jul2607_morrison08_t.jpg" align="left" border="0" hspace="4" vspace="1"></a>5) When you didn’t get a clean recording.

Sometimes, this is inevitable. A game runs super-long and instead of being recorded under just the “NHL Hockey” label it becomes a mix of “NHL Hockey/CBC News/The Hour/Arrested Development.” If the game was so wacky that you have dig through four different programs just to watch all of it, that might be a sign that it’s time to let go. Delete.

6) When you stop watching the recording at least once a month.

If the only reason you’re keeping a game on your PVR is so you have it, that’s a problem. And if you haven’t actually watched the game in more than 30 days, kiss it goodbye before it gets so strong a hold on you that you start saying things like, “I can see why O.J. would do that.” Delete.

7) When the game recap is available on Youtube.

Youtube isn’t just a forum for insane Britney fans. It can also be a valuable resource for just catching the main three or four highlights of a game. If you can view it with a click of the mouse you probably don’t need to view it with a push of the remote control button. Delete.

8) When the Canucks recording is keeping you from recording other programs you really want to see.

I missed Heroes and House, two shows that I love, because I couldn’t clear the space on my PVR to record them. And a PVR that can’t record is essentially useless. Delete.

9) When your unwillingness to delete a Canucks recording forces you to think about deleting a program you otherwise wouldn’t.

I can admit it: I love the Saved By The Bell episode with Johnny Dakota. You know the one I’m talking about. The one where the gang records a commercial for NBC with the tag-line, “There’s no hope with dope!” When you’re forced to consider deleting something so near and dear to your heart, it’s usually a sign that Canuckitis is blinding you. Delete.

10) When your obsession with preserving your recorded Canucks games forces you to write an article about it.

Do I really need to explain this one?

<a href="http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/images/upload/2007/07/jul2707_gameseven13_b.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://cdn.nhl.com/canucks/images/upload/2007/07/jul2707_gameseven13_t.jpg" align="right" border="0" hspace="4" vspace="1"></a>

After following these rules, I’m proud to say I’ve cut down the number of Canucks recordings on my PVR to just one; that one is game 7 against Dallas.

Well, maybe I’m not proud to say that.

But I’m good with it…

I’m alright with it…

You know, it’s a little sad, I guess…

Dear god, what have I done?!?</td></table>

Heh. We just got a PVR so I can somewhat relate, but in the opposite way. I need to start deleting TV shows to make room for Canucks hockey.
