In a week where the Victoria Salmon Kings gave their fans some memorable moments in four home games, one goal will be long cherished as it made it as TSN's Highlight of the Night. Another memorable goal was the drag move that Olivier Latendress employed to finish the home stand with a shootout wining goal. Victoria opened the week by welcoming a new defenseman, Andy Rodgers. A four home sweep would move the Salmon Kings into a points tie for 2nd place in the National Conference. The schedule brought the Las Vegas Wranglers in for a Tues/Wed series followed by a Fri/Sat tilt with the Bakersfield Condors. Five different players scored in Victoria's opening 5-3 win over the Wranglers. Andy Brandt netted the eventual winner. Three unanswered goals in the third closed the deal for the Salmon Kings. An intense battle took place the following night in a grittly game with sticks a bit higher and numerous one on one skirmishes. It was the last regular season game between the Victoria and Las Vegas. It was a close game until once again, a three goal third period ensured a 6-4 Victoria win. With a goal and an assists, Scott Howes earned his first star. In both the Las Vegas games, at two key points in both games, Andy Brandt and Olivier Filion made "saves" that kept the puck away from their net. Two nights later, three Salmon Kings would find their goal shown across the nation on TSN. It was the fifth goal of a five goal first period outburst. Adam Taylor finished off the play after a series of dazzling puck control moves by Scott Howes and Dirk Southern. This goal is now on YouTube, Yahoo Sports Canada, and apparently other sports channels are requesting a copy. After a huge first period, the Salmon Kings eased up somewhat, but the Condors were unable to mount a sustained offense. An empty netter by Randall Gelech gave the home side a 6-3 win. With a large crowed on hand for the third annual Pink In The Rink Game(to aid breast cancer awareness), another tough gritty game was played. At times the play slowed enough to allow more hits than are usual. It was a game that featured a bit of everything. Wes Goldie got his first goal of the week with an emphatic slap shot on the fly in a shortanded breakaway. Goldie's counterpart as captain, Shane Weller got a hat trick for the Condors. Both goalies, Germany's Timo Pelmeir and David Shantz were often called upon to make big saves. Chad Painchaud with two goals and three assists for Olivier Latendresse paced the home side. Both are in the top ten for ECHL scoring, with Painchud at 6th and Latendress at 8th for points and 9th for assists. Wes Goldie, with 25 goals remains tied for 2nd in that ECHL category. Bakersfield overcame a two goal deficit in the third to force overtime which settled nothing. In the ensuing shootouts. just like the two road shootouts, Wes Goldie opened with a goal. In the final round, Olivier Latendresse utilized a drag the puck move which found its way into the Condor net. A David Shantz save then secured the 6-5 shootout victory. SPECIAL TEAMS---Wes Goldie got a shortanded goal. The power play was 5 for 21 and penalty kills were a sparkling 10 of 13 in the four games. TEAM SCORERS OF THE WEEK---Scott Howe and Olivier Latendress were the Salmon King scoring leaders with 3 goals and five assists for eight points. Chad Painchuad led the goal scoring with four. Three helpers as well put him in 3rd for the week. Patrick Columbes two goals and four assists for six points put him fourth for the week. AHL LOANS---Prior to the Bakersfield series, the Lake Erie Monsters, short a couple of players obtained Andy Brandt and Tim Weddeurburn on a loan for their weekend series in Abbotsford. They have since been returned to the Salmon Kings.SHADOW ALERT....D-man Kyle Radke has been traded by Idaho to Utah. In their 8-2 win in Victoria, Radke did a brilliant job of shadowing Wes Goldie. With the Grizzles due in for a series in early February, will we see a similar type of shadow play and watch the game within the game as the coaches try to counter such moves. UNSUNG HEROES--Mark Morrison and Marty Raymond. Coach Morrison for both his retooling the power play to make it unhealthy to opponents and with AHL callups and injuries, shuffling his lines to to achive their maximum potential. Condors coach Marty Raymond for his brilliant tatical moves as the clock ticked down in the Saturday shootout game. A little less than two minutes left in regulation time, he sent out his top line, as well as a centre, Adam Naglich at left defense. Then he pulled his goalie, and the player sent out, Gino Guyer scored the goal that forced overtime. CALIFORNIA DREAMING..Following the All Star game, the Salmon Kings will have a two week, 5 game road trip to California with two games in Bakersfield and three in Stockton. ALL STAR STARTER---congratulation to goalie David Shantz for being named as the starting goalie in the upcoming ECHL All Star game. Watch this spot for a hockey history of David Shantz with it being updated to include his part in the 2010 AllStar Game. QUILT AUCTION---Gary Gladue's mom, Elaine, made a Salmon King themed quilt which was part of a silent auction for Pink in the Rink. It was located at the Booster Club table and the winning bid was $350. FLY ME TO THE MOON---The Booster Club has a raffle where you have a chance to win a trip anywhere WestJet flies.
