Ok, so in the last few years a few of my sisters aquaintances have passed away due to drinking and driving. The most recent being two weeks ago. Why do these ppl think they are invincible? I dont want this thread to turn into sob fest 2007 but it really pisses me off how they put the rest of us in harms way. My sister had a friend die in 2005 and two aquaintances pass away recently in the same car accident. In both instances, the driver survived and his passenger(s) died. Don't get me wrong, I feel awful about what happened but why would you get into a vehicle with a drunk driver? Doesnt make any sense to me.

I have MADD respect for drunk drivers.

That'd suck if you knew you were drunk and you are driving...
then you get into an accident and only the passengers die, but you live.
Wow that'd suck, because you would know that you killed the passengers.

I hate it too.

A couple weeks ago my friend was arguing with me because she didn't want me to drive her car which she had just bought (it's an old car, i'm a good drive, i was sober, she wasn't) and kept saying how sober she was. Stupid thing was i was watching how much she was drinking that night AND she kept telling me how buzzed then how drunk she was as she kept partying. So i told her i'm driving, there's no way around it. It's better to drive sober and be safe than to kill me and yourself. She kept saying how much she wanted to run into a blockade so that she could request a breathalyzer for herself to prove how sober she was. So i drove us to my house, then let her drive herself home. I did my best in the circumstance. I don't really drink at all, and never if she's driving.

I have never been in this situation but I dont think I would be able to live with myself knowing that I killed the passenger or passengers while I was driving. Again, I have never been in this situation so I can not relate.

You know what, I've been thinking alot about this recently. I'm almost 20 now, and recently, within the last couple years, it seems that more and more people that I know are starting to think its okay to drink and drive. Sure, one or two beers is one thing, but I've come into contact with alot of people, regular people, who routinely drink and drive. I find this pretty shocking.

Most of my close friends think its the stupidest thing a person could ever do, but a couple of my buddies have DUIed and most everybody knows somebody that has drank and drove. I dont know where this came from. I dont do it, wouldnt do it. I just thought our generation had been brought up thinking that it was a bad idea, yet apparently this isnt totally true.

I've never understood myself why it still happens. Growing up in a small town people used the excuse that it wasn't that far of a drive - well if it's not that far, why can't you walk home then? In Calgary it's been on the news several times about the rise in drinking and driving 1) because it's playoffs and 2) because there is a major shortage of taxi drivers, public transit and police, so because someone doesn't want to wait an hour and half for a taxi, they drive home drunk. Some viewer polls on the news even suggest that it's not necesarily the driver's fault if they drive drunk because no other means of transportation are available. Ridiculous. Years ago, I fell asleep when I was driving and drove off the road, not injuring anyone including myself. It was a bloody miracle considering it was a few km outside Abbotsford and there's rockcuts all over the damn place. To this day, it makes me feel queasy thinking that I could have killed someone else. So why someone would knowingly get in the car with a driver who's had one too many or why the driver thinks they absolutely have to drive their car home... eek.

Well were really not that far beyond a time when drinking and driving was seen as more humorous then evil. So I suppose that's still a part of some people's mindset. And despite the horrific and tragic deaths, probably 99% of of drunk excursions end safely in the driveway without incident, so many people think that the rules don't really apply to them.

And the reason the drunk driver is often unhurt is because their body is usually relaxed at the point of impact, whereas the passengers often see the crash before it happens and tense up. This is actually a decent lesson for any driver in any circumstance. If you are about to crash, relax yourself for impact. You will be significantly less injured.

Now before any tight asses start railing on me, none of this was meant as an endorsement for drinking and driving. Someone asked some why's and I attempted to objectively answer them from the drunk driver's mindset. Because right or wrong, the person that chooses to drive drunk goes through a decision making process and comes up with the idea that its ok.

I say don't drink and drive
You might spill your drink
Before you get behind the wheel, just stop & think
You can take your chances
But there's so much to lose
Another bumpy road,
There's so much wasted booze

I'm not so worried
About how many I kill
I'm much more concerned
With how much beer I spill
35% of accidents
Are cause by pixilated
The other 65% are not
Alcohol related
What does this tell us
About the drunk drivers
They seem to have a
Better record than
the sober team

I'm not so worried
About how many I kill
I'm much more concerned
With how much beer I spill
With how much beer I spill
With how much beer I spill

Like drinking is an absolute necessity for survival.

Here's an idea: Drink at home. Bunch of f*cking sociopaths putting their social lives and alcoholic refreshments over the safety and lives of other people. rolleyes.gif

Drinking excessively impairs your judgment..both as driver and the ability of a (drunk) passenger to decide not to get in a vehicle with a drunk driver in the first place.

Sorry to hear your sister has lost so many friends in this manner. I hope people stop and think upon reading this. These deaths are avoidable!!!

Sorry to hear about your losses. I have no idea either why people still drink and drive. It's extremely selfish, and I just don't understand how people are willing to risk that much for themselves, and even more importantly innocent bystanders, because they're either too cheap or lazy to call a cab or get a friend to drive them home. It doesn't seem to matter how many times or how many disgusting images people see as a result too. Last year before grad a doctor from the emergency ward at VGH came in and showed us this extremely graphic presentation of people dying from DD, yet people just go on doing it still because they think they're invincible.

those new f****** driving rules only makes the problem worse

I've gotten upset with his stupidity many times.
He's going to seriously hurt himself or someone else if he keeps on doing it.

In fact drinking and driving probably wouldn't be an issue if your stupid driving dumbasses wouldn't drive drunk.

Isn't it something like 10% of all drivers get 90% of all tickets? Those are the same people that drive drunk and run over children in baby carriages.

In my experince, I know when I shouldn't drive. But I have driven drunk. all my quotes are from someone else. hence the quotes.

sadly though, I can almost guarentee you that I will probably not die before you. I'll probably die in my 40's,early, like 43, once I've decided to calm down and live a productive lifestyle. Once I actually start to make a difference and once schools been graduated. basically, once I realize I'm old and my youth is behind me.
until than, I only live once.

This is why I take the public transit more often than drive. My stress level goes up whenever I'm driving - it's not worth it sometimes. There's been many occassions where I'm so close to a road-rage 'cuz of stupid drivers - makes me wanna clobber them with my car security club.

Fridays at the end of each month is the worst - especially in the evening. Lots of drunk drivers then. You guys watch out.

But you have to get the baby carriage coming around the bend with one of the front tires in the air.
Two Tense
might I add.
i have drunken drove... but I never drove like I did when i was sober. that is, quick and swifty... not to the extent I kill myself, i used common sense, but I give her. and remember people this was WHEN, i drove drunk, i'd slow down and mad pay attention to everything... best thing is, I've driven past at least 6 cops hammed. As long as the cars fine (which it was) you don't get pulled over.

only one time can I say that I really shouldn't have driven, and that was a personal issue I had to get over.. saw a cop that night too. he turned left and so did I...

hahaha.

I don't have to agree with you in order to deserve life.

I actually hate people who agree with me. "i don't need yes men to laugh when I laugh, I'm a dog, I can kiss my own ass."

I know I was right. My existence proves it. There is a line when I know I can't. back in the day 2/3 yrs ago, I drove home drunk DAILY.
I don't promote it, and if someones too drunk i take thier keys, but we all know who can do what when. You can live in your protective bubble all you want, you can get mad at me, the mad that you feel in your body, but I've decided to look and be in life as it is, unbiased and not for anyones favor.. there's no real reason to feel anything... it doesn't matter. You can feel fear and it really won't make you less scared. You get mad and it won't do anything. You can be as sad as you want about VT. But it won't bring anyone back. I have no heart, not cause I'm mean, but because you really don't need one now a days.
