  1. If he takes a 1 year deal that fits, then why not?
  2. Range of years: 2014 (JB's first year) - 2018 (as only 13 players drafted after then have played in the NHL). Source: EliteProspects. They have pages for each team's draft picks over the years. Count up the picks, and the games played and the top 10 picks and their games played and do the math. Outside of top 10 picks, the Canucks have the 7th or 8th fewest games played per pick of all franchises over that period. About 2/3rds of the league average. Boston has by far the most. Benning's score is going to be lower because he loves to trade away seconds and thirds, which is worth noting. But other GMs do this too and you might argue that the GM of a rebuilding team shouldn't. The fanbase massively overestimates how well we have drafted of late. Just because we haven't whiffed on every single pick like in the Gillis era doesn't mean we have drafted well.
  3. It's probably got something to do with whoever is running Boston's amateur scouting... From 2014 to 2018 drafts, the everage pick outside the top 10 has played 19.77 games. Boston have managed an average of 54.94. JB has an average of 12.6 and Chiarelli had 11.76 at Edmonton. Not much above league average COMBINED.
  4. If they think it's gonna a short term low cap, no player will sign an 8 year deal. A 10-15% salary cut and some compliance buyouts (maybe 2 per team) might be more realistic
  5. This was decided last year. It's the Yotes. https://www.nhl.com/coyotes/news/coyotes-to-move-to-central-division-in-2021-22/c-302594896
  6. Eriksson's deal is going to be problematic for signing a whole bunch of young guys, but I guess this helps. Ultimately I be looking to move him for a higher cap hit and shorter term contract. But if there's a chance Ladd is on Robidas Island before the end of his deal, then this is a good move - depending on our confidence in Madden to work out like Gaudette. Alternatively, replace Gaudette with Madden and a 2nd round pick in 2021 - does that get it done?
  7. The contingency stadium for Yokohama was Tokyo. A typhoon 10% of the size would have ruled that out
  8. No one thinks those have should have gone ahead add originally scheduled, but no-one thinks they should have just been cancelled. The soccer world cup won't be in an unstable region for another 3 years!
  9. Scotland now have legal advice that games cancelled due to weather can be rescheduled. The cynic in me points to the outright cancellation of the Italy-NZ game as being as much about justifying forcing Japan into the last 8 as anything else. The schedule (always playing teams on their shortest rest) and refereeing has been very kind on Japan (end of Samoa game, Ireland getting clarification that most of the penalties awarded against them in their Japan game were wrong, etc). World Rugby are making FIFA look good right now.
  10. If Gaudette + not much can get Callan Foote, then I think we make that trade. A lot depends on management's confidence in Madden stepping into that 3C role that Gaudette would vacate. A future blueline like the following would be pretty formidable: Hughes - Foote Juolevi - Myers Tryamkin - Stecher
  11. Hell, Gusev would be a great sweetener for the Eriksson contact if nothing else...
  12. At the start of a season, we would need to be under the cap before placing anyone on LTIR. We would effectively need the $5.333333m in cap space at that point, and not the 3 million. We might have stomached that for a year and claimed back a 4 million credit against the penalty, but that would only knock it down to 2.5 mill per year.
  13. I think the Canucks might challenge that the 800k retained for 5 years is not being factored into the penalty. Assuming he was here for the full 13-14 season, the total cap hit would have been $21,333,333 and total salary of $30,144,000. We also took a cap hit of 4 millon (5*800k) over the last 5 seasons on the retained salary, so effective cap hit was $25,333,333. Difference is then $4,810,667, which is $1,603,556 for 3 years. (which could be transferred to the Panthers in what we can call the Matheson Rule *he he he*) I'd expect the league to reject that, but it's worth a shot. I don't have actual salary paid and cap charge figures from the last season Lou was here, but as he left a little early, it would likely reduce how much we are penalised by a little.
  14. Assuming that management doesn't want him around and Loui doesn't want to be a Canuck, his failure to report would be a cause for termination that is mutually agreeable... Had a quick look at the CBA but couldn't see anything about mutual terminations. Agreed on the restructuring, certainly within a limit. The issue with Loui is that he's grossly overpaid for what he does, and the salary brings expectations from the fanbase, which must filter down to management and coaching. If he was doing what he does here for $2.5m, I don't think there'd be an issue.
  15. I don;t know why we'd add a first round pick to this if we're giving them Tanev, a second and cap space. Also, when taking on cap dumps, priority needs to be serviceable player who are paid too much. I don't think Sekera meets the 1st criterion.
  16. Assuming we re-sign Edler, then if Juolevi is good enough for the Show, we have Edler, Hughes, Hutton and Juolevi should be good enough for the left side. If we're anticipating Juolevi being in Utica and Edler not being a Canuck next season, then this makes a little bit of sense, but not much.
  17. If we get a 35+ goal scoring winger out of Erik Gudbranson he is a wizard. And Schenn is making a bigger contribution to our blueline than Guddy and DJMDZ combined this season. We are a better team for those two trades.
  18. 750k 7/8th Dman is a push for him, honestly. There is a strong argument that he is the worst defenceman to get regular ice time, in each of the last few seasons.
  19. Honestly, the idea that professional hockey players, who routinely throw themselves in front of slapshots, are afraid enough of a punch from the slightly larger guy on our team to influence how they play against us, is beyond farcical. The arguments that Gudbranson plays best "when paired with an elite defenseman" is hopefully a joke, or actually a damning indictment of his hockey ability. Much like anyone who played om the Sedin line having a good stat-line, Gudbranson is apparently at his best when a much more talented player is doing all the work and covering his uselessness. I don't want one of my best players wasted babysitting a guy who's only in the league because he's 230lbs and was drafted 3rd overall. The fact that other GMs might be interested in him still is not a validation of his ability, it is an appeal to authority fallacy. Ever work with someone and think 'how did this guy get hired?' only to reason it out with 'well management must know what they are doing and some other company also hired him previously...' Thought not. I do see the importance of physicality in the game of hockey, but never at the expense of ability to actually play hockey.
  20. Would anyone be defending Gudbranson if he was 5'11 and 185lbs? I doubt it. Would he even be in the NHL is a better question. He's objectively awful at playing defence. In terms of preventing goals against, he is among the worst in the entire league. He's also a fake tough guy. Throws a big hit every now and then but doesn't actually play with grit. Doesn't fight or any of that outdated "real hockey" stuff that he's being sold to us as.
  21. Canucks to get 65 points or less, finish 31/31. Pettersson to score 25-50-75 Brock to get 35 goals One of Virtanen and Goldy to look like top 6. D-core remains the worst in the league OJ to come up full time after Tanev traded in January. Lukas Jasek to be top scorer on Comets and get an extended look at the NHL level by end of year. Debut of QH after college season.
  22. If Pettersson pans out at centre this season, then we should be looking at Bowen Byram more than the guys.
  23. So, in the media, for the first 6 weeks of the season, Boeser was "slightly behind" Keller in the race for the Calder. For the last six weeks he's "slightly behind" Barzal. Who do we think he'll be "slightly behind" come the end of January? My money is on McAvoy...
