I have a Victoria Royals save I've been playing around with for a while now. It's a bit of a different flavour from the base game. The turnover is fast since guys only play 3-5 years of junior. There's different roster restrictions like overage and under-age players and foreign players. Pretty fun

I always thought Albertans were the most free market in Canada.... I was wrong. They do love running for handouts when in a hole like tainted beef, floods, plummeting oil market and of course keeping their franchise in Calgary . The most sheepled province in the country.

You could be right Alf, if they don't make much profit, they would be hard pressed to spend the money on competent coaching staff.

However I feel it is more organizational ineptitude. Looking at their players, their AHL squad isn't bad at all, on paper.

I saw this tweet as well.  Sometimes people are quick to assume when a Russian player doesn't work its because of their work ethic or attitude issues.  Sometimes its just poorly managed teams.

So many mitigating factors come into play for a player "making it" in the show. Many behind the scenes situations where fans have no idea that can have a tremendous outcome on a players career.

Neal has been a consistent 25+ goal scorer his ENTIRE career. He has had ONE off season. Edmonton easily wins this trade. Neal riding shot gun with McDavid on RNH will definitely get back to those numbers. Not even debatable.

The reason why I'm specifically talking about Hoglander, is because a. He was projected by most scouts to be a mid-to-late first round pick, and fell to 40 and b. He is an absolute fitness freak which I think will give him an edge in having a good training camp and really improving next year, maybe improving more than a normal prospect would.

I almost always err on the side of caution with prosects. Far too many times have I been overhyped about a prospect and they bust or don't turn out how well I thought they should have. Example - Galchenyuk, called him a likely 100 point player, one of the most dominant centers in the league. Same Reinhart - said he'd score 60 points in his rookie season and would be a PPG player by the time he was 20. 

So since I've been cautiously optimistic about prospects. I wasn't sure of Hoglander to be perfectly honest. I knew a little about him but it took me a lot of convincing to be okay with the pick. Fron what I've learned/seen/read, I'm convinced now that this kid has top 6 NHL upside and soon. Yeah, I'm excited. But, that's not the main factor to why I believe this young man has something special.

@Baer. - Are you really that surprised he hasn't been offer sheeted? Its easy in theory to give away four 1st rounders for Marner, but I suspect that when you're the GM of a team which has the cap space and assets to actually pull the trigger, there is a lot of concern about negative feedback from multiple sources including other NHL GMs and your fanbase. Could you imagine the sh*tstorm that Benning would get if he traded away another four 1st round picks on this team? We wouldn't have a first round pick until 2025. All it takes is Marner getting injured or not playing as well as he has to date and you not only likely lose your job, but you've destroyed the team's future. The actual reality is that when it comes time for someone to pull the trigger on trading away four 1st rounders, it becomes extremely difficult to do so.

Exactly. He made it very clear that he wanted to be in the NHL. There is no reason to believe this "Russian factor" crap should be a factor. 

He's going to be a beast when he gets here. 

@Baer. Regardless of semantics, the Canucks got a kid who’s currently 6’2”, 190, has skill and grit out the задница, and wants to get bigger and better. The Russian factor worked in the Canucks’ favor this time.

Bolting to the KHL during your prime is never a good idea... especially when you're still developing and learning the game at the NHL lvl.
