    Captaincy

This is the only thing that matters to me regarding a Captain.

    Captaincy

This pretty much says it all right there about our next Captain. No more Mr. Nice guys thank you very much.
  3. For me, its not about being a playoff team or not, rather, which direction are they moving to that playoff team in the future. Having most of the players being in the 26-27 age range, we have time to construct a good team over the next couple of years. Also, with the evaluation of the team last year, I imagine management will continue this year and decide who stays and who goes. Not a finished product and so its hard to say where they are at. We have been going by that "Best Player Available" mentality and really had no direction as to where we were going. We finally see where the team is heading and its looking pretty good so far.
  4. I see them doing exactly as they wanted to , to a "T". Obviously, their hands are tied as to doing everything that they want to do, especially in the time frames they have had to work with but Wow! would a good start so far. Considering what they were left with and the obstacles they have had to over come, they have been working towards a team that looks more and more like a team that could compete in the playoffs. We have dead weight on this team, no doubt, and the Cap flexibility is not there yet, but they are not over paying players coming in and they are not giving away players for pennies on the dollar either. Give them another season to rid some baggage and bring in who they want and I could finally see light at the end of the tunnel. Bravo to Rutherford and Co. so far.
  5. I don't know if we should be looking at the Cap more then Player Performance. The whole reason we have issues is when a player underperforms his contract. I think salaries should be totally based on performance. Unless you are injured, if you are not performing, you don't get paid anything more then league minimum. We obviously see the difference in play from the playoffs to the regular season why should paying customers see less of an effort during the regular season? I have always thought that the players have to be more accountable and I think this would make them " more accountable" to the team and to the fans.
  6. I don't know if I am going for another championship and I have offensive weapons like Crosby, Malkin and Letang, is my priority to pay that much for another offensive weapon? With a Cap system, you can only spend a certain amount on all your needs and going top heavy ala Toronto does not always become a recipe for success. If it was me, I would have looked for complimentary players to play with Crosby or Letang or Malkin or go after a shut down defenseman. I suspect they will do fine in the regular season and even make it to the playoffs , but I don't see them doing much more then that TBH.
  7. The fact of the matter is, is that these players do not usually come available. How we were able to , while he is in his prime, and after he was drafted and then developed? Its a miracle really. It's like we acquired McDavid and people would still complain we paid too much. Now that's crazy. We just need to accept we have a piece to the puzzle which should get us one step closer to the ultimate prize.
  8. What a natural talent, I am seeing a potent PP with Petey, Miller, Kuz and him and Hughes on the blueline. The opposing goalie is going to have a hard time figuring out who to keep an eye on.
  9. Wow! What a shot! We haven't seen that from the blue line since........Salo? Salo wasn't very accurate though and he was injured most of the time. We have 2 defensman we have coveted for ever. A PMD(Hughes) and a top 4 dman with a shot(Hronek). I don't know how how anyone can question this acquisition.
  10. Its funny, many think these type of players are unimportant, yet , it appears many NHL teams think otherwise. Does anyone think we over paid for Miller still? Too bad Virtanen didn't work out but we seem to be acquiring players who are not going to skate away when their team mates are taking physical abuse.
  11. I agree, "Beast Mode" on Nashville yes! Hansen was great, Burrows at times, Linden in 94 playoffs, Bure on Churla. We have had some good players but as a team, we didn't play like Kesler played most nights. I really wished Bo would have turned out, but that didn't happen. Same with Virtanen. I like the direction we are going lately though, things are looking up.
  12. Nah not throwing a tantrum just don't care much for the player, we all have our own opinions. Don't care what you think either to be honest. You think he was effective, I don't. Seems like not many other teams liked him either or deemed him effective or useful.
  13. No your probably right, it probably has a lot to do with my frustration of the down falls of this team for decades. We have been the softies, gentlemanly team with a country club atmosphere for decades. We had many players who were great in the regular season and collapsed in the playoffs. No gamers who elevated their game in the playoffs and just rolled over and took it when the game got a lot more physical and intense. Most of my comments come from observations on the ice so I don't rely too much on the exact stats of every player on the team.
  14. Yes, you always end up with some insulting comment regarding one of my statements without providing any counter argument. It has happened numerous times in previous conversations. I can respect that you have an opinion and I have mine but it seems, if no one follows your argument, you think they are off their rocker. Like i said, a waste of my time if that is how you want to conduct business. To each their own I guess. Maybe you misunderstood because I mentioned many examples of not putting in the work; not body checking(and don't give me stats because I think the Sedins and Cliff Ronning have hits in their stats as well), blocking shots, getting in the dirty areas, basically a one dimensional player, pure offense.
  15. Your a waste of time to converse with. You should move to Melmac with Alf.
  16. You couldn't see it in his play on the ice? Many offensive players think that checking and hustle for the puck are not for them. Sven seemed like that player to me, if he wasn't producing offensively, he was invisible. Probably why he never stuck it out on any one team.
  17. No , that was because he skated around , oblivious to the play around him and got laid out because of it. Sacrifice the body? I don't think he threw a body check, ever.
  18. Ok put it this way for you to be able to understand, he was a "one dimensional player". Obviously if he is moving from one league to another and then retiring at the age of 30, maybe he wasn't that good as you allude to? Many on here thought it was a mistake to move on from Sven when we did, I didn't.
  19. Oh here comes canuck 73 and all his wisdom again. Thanks again for your insightful contribution to the conversation as usual. We have had a multitude of soft players who chose not to throw body checks, block shots, get into the dirty areas, stick up for team mates etc. which contributed to the Country Club atmosphere. Sven was a part of that. Its my opinion and I don't really care if you don't like it, it is a chat forum after all, no?
