#AssetManagement Toronto edition
Here is Toronto's trade history of 1st rounders and add-ons since 2019
2019 - Grundstrom (2nd) Durzi (2nd) 1st round pick (22nd OA) for Muzzin
2020 - gave away 13OA (Seth Jarvis) to get rid of the Marleau contract
2021 - traded away 25OA (Corson Ceulemans) to acquire Noesen and Foligno... both no longer with the TML
2022 - gave away to get rid of Mrazek contract... did get back a 2nd round pick (Fraser Minten) who had a very meh season and very underwhelming playoff as a D+1 player.
2023 - traded away 25OA (Otto Stenberg) to acquire Ryan O'Reilly who signed with the Preds as a UFA.
2024 - still owned by the TML but will probably have to attach it to Murray to trade away that boat anchor of a contract
2025 - traded away with other prospects to acquire Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty
the Leafs have traded away 6 first round picks for 1 playoff series win and only have McCabe and Lafftery left to show for it.- Show previous comments 14 more

Honestly I feel like Jarvis is worth more than that entire list, and he was drafted at #14. Grundstrom is nothing special, Durzi just got traded for a song. Ceulemans is young but hasn't really done enough to put himself on the radar and Stenberg is still a shiny toy.
It's not easy to get difference makers from late picks. It makes me wonder if Gillis had been more aggressive and traded away the picks that eventually became Schroeder, Gauce, Jensen, Rodin etc.
-
@Toews That's *always* been my position. Not the argument put forth by a number here that "Gillis traded away too many picks". He didn't go 'all in" enough (imho). Kind of opposite the problem of Benning who dealt away too many picks and not made enough attempts to acquire more picks to play to the strength of his management (drafting).

We drafted more RHD in 24 hours than we have since 2018/2022 combined.
Which means going back to 2003 we have drafted a total of 16 total RHD in 20 years, out of a combined 138 total draft picks. A total of 11.59% of all of our draft picks spent on RHD in 20 years, arguably our greatest positional need going back to 2003.
That is genuinely an insane stat if you think about it. it's no wonder we don't have anything in the pipes knowing we went 5 straight draft years without drafting a single one and averaged less than 1 per draft with the bulk of all total RHD being drafted AFTER the 3rd round in that 20 year span.
-
Tanev was a right side defenseman (though he was an undrafted prospect). I think Gagner was the scout that "found him".
Who would've thought that Brian Burke was right all along! I *think* he said something along the lines that Gagner was the *KEY* component of the Bure trade. Something like "if Gagner wasn't included in the trade, we don't do the deal". Gagner later was hired by Mike Gillis to be a scout after his playing days were over.

Freidman suggests that the Devils are looking at Hellebyuck and have enquired about the Boston goaltenders as well
-
Aho extension close, apparently will be max term $9.5 to $10.25 AAV
Nervous about Petey now -
Apparently Ryan Graves has no desire to sign with any Canadian team. So much for that.
-
Can't blame him... why would anyone wanna sign in a media market like Vancouver. No appreciation for players that put their bodies on the line for your team, just fake controversies, constant trade rumours, and higher taxation.
JT Miller has been getting crucified for the last two years in this market even though he's put up two great seasons with very little fanfare.
-
Dmitri Orlov is rumoured to be asking for $8+ million....with what Severson just got he's more than within the realms of reason. Free agency for defensemen is gonna be a gong show again and it makes me nervous for what Hronek will ask
-
I would sooner wear a Mark [He Shall not be Named] Canucks jersey from 97/98 than cheer for either of these teams in the final.

You proud of the Staal brothers play these playoffs?@Ghostsof1915
-
Justt realized the Ducks have 27 picks over the next 3 drafts and a shot at Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson mostly in the top 3 rounds.
Then realized the Coyotes have 37 picks over the next 3 drafts mostly in the first 3 rounds and a quality shot at the big 3 this year too.
Then saw we only have 21 picks over the next 3 drafts and they're mostly in the middle rounds.
Sigh

What the ever loving hell will TSN and sportsnet talk about on friday? lol.
10 straight hours of coverage talking about Chycrun and fabricating more trade proposals than the armchair fans of HF Boards? -
I mean, at least we have Garland and OEL and all that sweet sweet cap space.
Right?

I have to agree. The OEL/Garland Trade is looking worse and worse in hind sight every game we see. Losing those top 10 picks, also is problematic. It is gambling/shortcutting that has consistently put this club behind the 8 ball for the last decade or so. Coupled with a development system that only seems to really work if the player is talented enough to skip it, we're looking more Oiler-esque than not.
This roster is built wrong. It is supplemented by not that much, and I don't know if there is any easy fix to quickly turn it around. BUT, if we can accurately diagnose and do surgery on this roster, I still believe that we can turn it around with a semblance of the core.
There are some good pieces, and some good pieces implemented by this management group. Mikeyev, Kuzmenko, Bear, etc aren't the problem, per se. So at least those added pieces have value. But we need to figure out Horvat, Miller, Myers, OEL, Schenn, Pearson, etc. If you don't stick the landing on this before next season, we are in for a long term pain, with nothing in the pipeline that can be seen as impactful in terms of reinforcements from Below.
-
The point is @Phil_314 is that we would have had the 6 or 7 million cap space to acquire that RHD we need and a ELC to soften the impact. We would also have enough to re-sign Horvat and Kuzmenko.
The point is Benning never planned for the future.
-
@J.I.A.H.N totally valid, and as serviceable as Garland and OEL were last season, things clearly fell off the rails for both which makes this trade look even less palatable (esp. considering Horvat/ Kuz need new contracts). If we had time machines I'd bet 99% of Canucks fans would hope to go back and stop Benning from making that trade call, so Loui/ Beagle/ Roussel's contracts could just fall off the books, but no point crying over what's already happened.

The debate of value for Hoggie is surprising honestly. We really underappreciate our players

@hammertimeI 100% think it's a coaching issue. BB is just not the coach for him.
-
Kuzmenko at the TDL for Lafreniere. Who does it?
- Show previous comments 11 more
-
@#Canucks you're not getting Laf for Boeser with NY having the same cap issues we are. Kuz is under a million
-
Who goes first?
Boudreau
or
Horvat
-
I don't know who needs to hear this, but Anthrax Presale Tix with Black Label Society and Exodus in January are now live.
Presale code is BBM2023
-
THW just released their top 100 prospects. Interesting and also kind of sad
-
Not sure why people are freaking out; we'll sign PK Subban for like $2-$3 million and that's our RHD issue solved
-
Real shame the Hawks didn't have their 1st this year. They're selling uber low on Dach and their 6th OA this year, Dach and a + would be a nice return for Miller.
-
Opinion: Gallant is possibly the best coach in the NHL over the past 5 years (even without a cup win)
- Show previous comments 4 more
-
My point is that with 3 different teams in 5 years look what he has done.
Taken a no name no talent Florida team to respectability.
Vegas to a cup final and playoff berth
Rangers on the cusp of an eastern conference final
228 wins, 135 losses, 36 otl.
That winning percentage is genuinely insane and when you consider he missed most of a year after 2016/2017 being dumped by the Panthers...man
-
Florida wasn't without talent. It just wasn't as good as it is now.
I'd think differently if he went to Arizona and got the Coyotes into the playoffs.
The fact that two teams dropped him when he ran into bad streaks (All teams have bad streaks, not many coaches get dismissed when that happens)
I can excuse the first one because Florida at the time was a mess. But the dismissal from Vegas
still raises questions from me. Was he rubbing players the wrong way? Is there something going on
that they won't go public about? Was he demanding more input on players and trades?

AV for Tampa: $9.5 million
Markstrom for Calgary: $6 million
Bobrovsky for Panthers: $10 million
Fleury for the Wild: $3.5 million
Igor Shesterkin: $5.6 million
Quick for LA: $5.8 million
And of the non-playoff teams: Price in Montreal: $10.5 million who did go to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The reality is don't overpay for quality goaltending. But offer a reasonable contract.
-
@Drakrami cant remember if they signed bobroksky that contract before they drafted spencer knight be interesting to see what happens in the future with that.
-
Dr. Strange 2 might be my new fave marvel movie. Top bad guy period. Plus CAMEOS!!!!
-
@Odd. **More spoilers:
I’m still shook at how Wanda/Scarlet Witch took out the entire Illuminati in literally 2 minutes.
-
Something I wanna see is Max Domi signed to play with Horvat and Podkolzin.
Domi LW/Horvat LC/ Podkolzin RW
That line would mess people up.

You both make really good points. Like I said, I'm just not convinced Domi would be worth that cap hit.
Tell you what - if I'm wrong on this you can call me out and I will happily admit it

I'm really liking this idea lately. Bo is central to this team. His role and salary means he has to be playing a top role so at least second line center. How many years have we seen no one but Pearson seem to be a fit with him 5v5. Well we know they have chemistry on the ice, he was also one of Horvat's groomsmen at his wedding. He also adds some much needed toughness. I too would be concerned with his ability to score and generate goals.
