  1. 100% agree that we should be looking at right shot defensemen, but Murray was a player that came up that I thought would be a great target. I also agree the Juolevi is going to be a great player for a long time. If it was up to me, our left side next year would be, (assuming we don't resign Edler, and trade Hutton, which is what I would do) Hughes Murray Juolevi Which I think is a very competitive left side, but yes there are still massive holes on the right side.
  2. I agree the injuries are worrisome, but like I said above I think that's what will make a dman of his calibre attainable. And no, when righting this I was assuming we'd be acquiring his rights.
  3. I'm with you with keeping Virtanen, there's alot of potential there and I would hate to trade him, but he seems to be the odd man out when trading for defencemen. I would argue that Hutton is not they player we saw last year and we need to sell high before his value plummets, meanwhile taking a gamble that Murray stays healthy, if it pans out is huge for this defence.
  4. The biggest problem I had was figuring out Murray's value, he obviously has a ton of potential but the problem with assessing his value is that as you said he's made of glass and that he has never truly played the way he can. That is what I think makes him attainable vs other d men of his calibre and why I think he should be a target, he can be a top four maybe even a top pair d man on this team, if he can play 70 plus games and fulfil his potential.
  5. So I, like everyone here, have been trying to figure out how to fix the defense. I think it would be Ill advised to sign any free agent defenseman not named Erik Karlsson and we should be using our money to fix the offense. That being said the problem with trading for defenseman is that the Canucks don't have much of value to give up in a trade to get any decent top four d man. So for weeks I have been trying to figure out creative ways to acquire players that will substantially upgrade our D with what little we have to give. Then I read that the Blackhawks were in on Ryan Murray. Now I know that just because the Blackhawks are in on him doesn't mean that he's available, and the fact that they settled for Olli Maatta tells me that maybe the Jackets don't want to give him up. But the Jackets need picks (they only have a 3rd and a 7th in this draft), and they have a good young d core, so maybe the right package of picks would pry Murray out of Columbus. Problem is the Canucks shouldn't be selling their picks for one player, especially not a potential wild card in Murray, (not at this stage of the rebuild anyway). First I thought we could trade veterans like Tanev for picks, then package those picks to go after Murray, but then I wondered how I could utilize another teams picks in another way, so I came up with a three way trade, that I believe benefits all teams involved. I used the Canes in this trade proposal because of the extra seconds and the likely willingness to trade some for offensive help for another cup run. To VAN - Murray To CBJ - Two of CAR 2nds, VAN 2nd To CAR - Virtanen, Wennberg To break it down VAN gets Murray for Virtanen and a 2nd CBJ gets 3 2nds for Murray and Wennberg CAR gets Virtanen and Wennberg for 2 2nds The Canucks get a relatively young (26 by next season), big, defensively responsible top four d man with offensive upside. He has decent possession numbers, plays big minutes with alot of d zone starts, and showed what he could do offensively last season. Obviously the concerns are the injuries but a player with his talent would look good on this team. The Jackets get picks, and good ones at that, as well as an opportunity to offload Wennbergs not so savoury contract which saves them some extra cap space to resign Duchene. The Canes get offensive help. Both Virtanen and Wennberg are young players with upside that will slot into their top nine and they still get to keep one of their three 2nds. All in all I apologize for the length of the post but frankly if you don't want to read my thoughts than I don't value your opinion. I believe this would be worth it for all teams because it fills a need for everyone, but feel free to tell me if Im wrong.
  6. I totally agree, Dickey gets too much flak IMO. He tends to be the scape goat if the Jays lose with him on the mound, he gets very little offense, and I find the defence even underperforms with him out there, it isn't always his fault. I'm not saying I would trade Syndergaard for him or anything, but he isn't that bad.
  7. I wish Dan Shulman would do every game for the rest of my life, even post season. Buck isn't bad and neither is the new guy (Matt Devlin) but I love listening to Shulman.
  8. Storen for Benoit, good pitcher having bad year for good pitcher having bad year... I'll take it. Also big win for the Jays, I was at baseball practice and missed the second half of the game, but listened to the walk off in the car on the way home. I got soooo hyped.
  9. Regardless of whether or not we need Upton we hardly have to pay him and we gave up very little. We get quality defence, speed on the base paths, and some more power at the dish. Good deal, even if the intentions are kinda murky. Edit: Also the best part of the deal is the Orioles don't get him, so I mean that's a win...
  10. I know this looks like a bad deal now but can we all take a deep breath... I'm sure it has a purpose. If I had a guess either Saunders or Bautista gets dealt to a contender with pitching depth and the need for an outfielder, (Cleveland maybe, for Carrasco which is a deal I can get behind). I don't understand this deal at the moment either but I will reserve judgement until after the trade deadline as I don't believe management is anywhere close to done. We made the Upton deal first so the Orioles couldn't get him and a new deal is upcoming. Again this deal confuses me too, but I think it's a precursor, and we will all be happy with the eventual result. Let's all just take a deep breath, sit back, and watch things unfold.
  11. Hate to see the opposition hit a bomb, but I enjoyed that a little too much.
  12. Storen just got DFA'd, he might pass through waivers but I would bet we will see a trade involving him within the next ten days. Edit: Sorry Shaky didn't mean to quote you...
  13. Depends on the starter, I would take a risk on Puig, but I need value coming back with him. Probably Kazmir, preferably Maeda.
  14. Did anyone else notice the Tenors change the lyrics to the Canadian national anthem. The point they were making was thoughtful and all, but I really felt it was kinda disrespectful. It just wasn't the time or place to share your feelings IMO. Anyone else feel that way?
  15. The way Smoak has played, It'll be tough for Cola to get playing time, we'll have to see what he does with his time. I like Bello but Smoak has earned his spot as the everyday first baseman. Wouldn't be surprised if he is gone soon after he comes back, especially if he plays poorly like he did before he was suspended.
  16. Apparently he is out of his walking boot, so he is getting better but I really couldn't tell you how much longer it'll be til he's back.
  17. I definitely think the reason Carrera comes in for Saunders is because of the knee. I agree I would hate to see a platoon situation there (I hate platooning players sooo much) but I just can't see either being traded right now. However I think Junior Lake has been pretty impressive in limited innings, maybe he could sway Shapiro to trade Carrera for bullpen help. The jays have an embarrassment of riches on the bench, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens, can't see them watching the trade deadline pass by and not adding a couple of good arms.
  18. No way they take Saunders out, they will still keep Carrera around as the 4th outfielder as originally planned, filling in when often injured Saunders and Bautista need a day off. Honestly I wouldn't touch the outfield, with the risk of Saunders or Bautista getting injured (or even Pillar, the way he plays it's almost inevitable he gets hurt in the near future) Carrera can step in and make an impact no problem. To me the biggest decision they have to make is Goins or Barney, we have too many infielders.
  19. I am absolutely hyped after that hit from Tulo. Earlier in the season that 3-2 pitch would have been a swing and a miss. With Tulo hitting like he can, Eddy and Donaldson doing their thing, the starters pitching so well, and the rest of the lineup producing, when Bautista comes back the jays could be unbeatable. That is, if we can fix this horrendous bullpen.
  20. I'm watching Bluejays in 30 right now, so far my biggest take away from this series is that Carlos Gonzalez may just have the prettiest swing in all of baseball... It is a thing of beauty. I also think it's interesting that he stands so far away from the plate, I guess when you're as big as him you can get to the outside half wherever you are.
  21. I've said all along, if Tulo gets hot and Travis comes back the jays will start winning again, and right now they are doing it without Tulo in the lineup. Long story short I'm much more confident in them then I was a few weeks ago.
  22. Grilli has been a very good relief pitcher for a long time now, sure he's not what he used to be but I wouldn't call him mediocre. He sure as heck can't be any worse then what we have had in the late innings recently (with the exception of Osuna).
