  1. Or maybe something like this: To Vancouver: Jones Jenner To Columbus: Raymond Ballard 3rd
  2. I'm just waiting for Edler to score a goal, he's been stuck at 99 for more than a year
  3. I think the whole "the new generation is dumb" is a narrative constructed by older people to make them feel better as their knowledge loses value. Previously "intelligence" was often synonymous with knowing a lot, this is no longer the case, as everyone has the entirety of the internet at their disposal at all times, so being able to rattle off the capital cities of all European countries is no longer valued, as you can just Google the information if you were to need it. Another thing is that as society changes different information is valued, most younger people (that I know anyways) do not know as much about birds as older people do, but all young people can do their taxes online and will not accidentally lose all their money since they gave a sketchy website their credit card info.
  4. The Luongo thing is so damn weird. First off the contract wasn't illegal at the time, secondly all teams signed front loaded contracts, yet we're the only team that gets punnished. But yeah, after this season Pettersson and Hughes are gonna cost at least $12 million more per year, so any cap relief we get is gonna get eaten up by them. Also, I don't trust Benning to manage our cap moving forward considering his history.
  5. Not according to CDC, we've got at least five bad contracts (Eriksson, Myers, Roussel, Beagle, Sutter), but people still think Benning is a good GM.
  6. I think it means that he stops 100 % of the shots against, and for 99 % of those shots the save results in a goal for his team, pretty pretty good...
  7. Oh, I bet he would if he had the say around the league.
  8. I'd even argue that he's done more damage than Messier did. There was no salary cap back then, plus we got Bertuzzi in the Linden trade.
  9. Nicklas would have won the Norris in his 20s had been named Lindsay instead of Lidström and born in Abbotsford instead of Avesta. It's crazy to think that he managed to win seven Norrises when he got his first at age 30. He was a trail blazer in a way Bourque never was; he the first European to captain his team to a Cup and the first European to win the Conn Smythe. Bourque is 10 years older than Lidström, so when you're talking about his 2001 season (first team all star), you've gotta compare it to Lidström's 2011 season, where he won the Norris (you can of course make the case that he didn't deserve to win it that year, but at least he wasn't miles worse than Bourque at the same age.) Lidström won four Stanley Cups to Bourque's one, you can argue that he had better teams, but then again, he managed to win with them. He's also a member of the Trippel Gold Club, something Bourque is not. Ray played during a much higher scoring era, that explains his better counting stats. Lidström >> Bourque.
  10. Not having Lidström in your top two should be considered a federal felony.
  11. The last thing Benning should do is go out and sign a bunch of guys. Eriksson, Beagle, Rousell, Myers and Sutter are costing us now. We don’t need any more horrible deals.
  12. Haven’t watched that show in forever so I’d forgotten how bad it was. Man the dialog is so unnatural and none of the jokes are even remotely funny. How could this catch on?
  13. Man I was so bummed out when CoHo was traded; I remember CDC going down for several hours.
  14. Wasn't Luo captain for one season only?
  15. This guy spells his first name with a K and not a C. Please change this, it hurts my eyes.
  16. So, we're losing our second best defense man and two top six wingers this year? You don't think we should replace them in any way?
  17. This has got to stop. Benning has overseen the Canucks during a six year rebuild where we’ve been the worst team in the league. “His drafting is amazing”: well yeah, when you routinely get top 5 picks it usually turns out ok. Plus he’s missed on two top 10 picks (Virtanen and Joulievi). We just managed to squeeze into the playoffs, and our cap is a total mess. He’s handed out too large too expensive contracts to bottom line players, and this will severely hinder our future (what happens when both Elias and Quinn need ~$10 million contracts in a year? Sure, he hasn’t been all bad but to even suggest that he’s the best GM in our franchise’s history is laughable. (I remember during the fall of Torts’ season where someone hade a thread saying “Torts is the best coach in Canucks history” just ‘cause we’d had a hot start. This is in the same vein.)
  18. Incredible pictures, man! The first raven picture is crazy cool!
  19. Is this really true? The 2011 team consisted of two Art Ross winners, a 41 goal scoring Selke winner, a first line winger with four straight 25 + goal seasons, two defensemen who topped out scoring 50 points and the best goaltending duo in the league. I think we forget just how good the 2011 team was.
  20. He's got a mean streak, it's just that he only brings it out against Russians.
  21. I mean, it’s pretty clear that we should not have drafted Jake in 2014. The fact that our prospect pool is deep isn’t such an amazing thing since we’ve been like the worst team in the league these past five years. When it comes to OJ these are some facts: he was drafted fifth overall and hasn’t played a single NHL game yet. Four players drafted in the first round that year have yet to make their NHL debut, they went 5, 18, 25, 28 overall. More than half of the players drafted in the second round have played NHL games. This is not a good thing. A big part of your argument is that you seem to believe that our B level prospects will pan out, which is nothing but your beliefs. In the height of the Gillis era I was super stoked for Dane Fox, Jordan Subban, Anton Rödin, Nicklas Jensen, Hunter Shinkaruk and Jordan Schroeder. I was certain that at least a few of them would become good NHL players, and turned out none of them became anything. I’m not saying that no one of our B level prospects will play in the NHL I’m just saying that hinging a big part of your argument on them doing so is a bad idea. Again, my point is that Benning has done a fine job, but the Canucks have also been one of the worst (if not the worst) team in the NHL during his time as GM (while trying actively to be a good team, see all dumb July 1 free agent signings he’s made). So saying that he’s a good GM since our prospect pool is the best it’s been in years is strange, since that’s the only thing he has to show: our results have been atrocious and our salary cap is a mess.
  22. Listen, I get what you’re saying, however, my point is that if you’re pushing the narrative that Benning’s drafting is historically great then missing on two top 10 picks doesn’t help your case. Also if we focus on the Virtanen selection: the next four forwards selected have all out scored Jake. It clearly was a bad selection. And sure, McCann has been good, but Benning traded him for a horrible defenseman just a year into his career, so I don’t know what that says about him as a talent evaluator. I think Benning’s done a fine job in the first round, Brock, Elias and Quinn are all slam dunk picks, but his record is not perfect. He hasn’t really had amazing success in the later rounds, sure Tryamkin, Forsling (traded for Adam Clendening before he ever played a game for the Canucks) and Demko look like fine picks. None of them are stars, however. In recent years the Tampa Bay Lightning have found Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat (just to name a few) outside of the first round. My point: Benning’s drafting has been fine, but not super amazing, like you and this thread are making it out to be.
