Can't you make a public announcement why you signed for what. anywhere between 8 to 10 million he should be fine. You still have the other elites to compare yourself with?

Many, many years ago the Detroit Red Wings would give Gordie Howe a blank cheque for his contract. They would tell him to fill it in with whatever he felt he was worth. They knew Gordie was a very humble farm boy and would fill the cheque in with an amount which was much less than he was worth. Detroit and every other team would use that contract to keep salaries artificially depressed. It took a guy like Ted Lindsay to stand up to the owners and they finally got a players' union. The same would happen if McDavid signed for less than market value.

When you discount your rates people tend to value you less.
