  1. Yep. That's right. You have to play the guy to find out what you have. This franchise is becoming so dysfunctional. The left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. The coach and management team seem to be on different agendas. Something has to give soon.
  2. Anyone have any idea why he has not played the last 2 games? He was brought back to help with scoring for a team that has big troubles scoring. His first and only game he plays 7 minutes. I recall reading that while he was in Utica for his conditioning stint that the coaches were raving about his speed and puck skills. Sounds like something the Canucks could sorely use. Not sure why they wouldn't try him with the Sedin's instead of a a plug like Megna. Where is Rodin????
  3. If management believes the team they have right now is going to be competitive next year and that means making a solid playoff run they are smoking some funny BC grass. I do believe that last year was a complete train wreck with Torts leading the way but this team is still full of 3rd and 4th line players playing 2nd and 3rd line minutes. The way I see it Burrows, Higgins, Kassian, Hansen, Richardson, Matthias, Bonino, Vey, Dorsett, Sestito are all bottom nine players for a true contending team. The only 2/3 out of this group that probably have the potential for second line are Kassian, Bonino and Burrows (only because of his chemistry with the Sedins). So, if management thinks it needs to bring a goalie to compete then they will also have spend big money on some top line players either through trade or free agency. If they go through free agency they will massively overpay. For example, look at Garrison's contract. Then that leaves us the trade route. What do we have but young assets and draft picks that will get us bonafide top line players???? It's just not going to happen. So, my point is...why bother bringing an expensive veteran goalie like Miller or Hiller when we have 2 very talented young guys that should be learning along with some of our other younger players.
  4. Don't want Miller or Hiller or any other goalie signed as a free agent for the sole reason that it would mean either Lack or Markstrom are gone. Most likely it would be Markstrom but this guy was heralded as the best goalie not in the AHL just over a year ago. He couldn't have completely fallen apart already, right???? I really hope the Canucks don't start signing some of these old vets like Iginla (who I highly doubt would sign with Van) or Miller just to MAKE the playoffs. No chance the Canucks will make it anywhere against teams like LA, CHI, ANA, STL. The team has enough veteran leadership as it is, they need to start bringing in the youth. I don't mean that Horvat, Shinkaruk or any of the other young prospects are jumping into the lineup but there better be spots for Jensen and Vey unless they are outplayed by someone. Sedin - Sedin - Kassian Jensen - Bonino - Burrows Higgins - Vey - Hansen Matthias - Richardson - Dorsett Hamhuis - Bieksa Edler - Tanev Sbisa - Stanton Lack Markstrom I would prefer if the Canucks traded away some of our overabundance of 3rd liners that we currently have playing out of position. I would love to see the Canucks trade Burrows and Higgins for draft picks or prospects and sign/trade for some legit second liners that can score.
  5. CynideSnipe...have you been taking too much cyanide??? Can you point out one player, just one player, anyone, I beg of you to find any player in this draft that had 2.0 ppg. Seriously????? All your posts in the topic have been so unbelievably negative that begs the reasoning that you must not be a Canucks fan. It clearly sounds like you are a Laffs fan though. Why can't people be happy we got a really good player with the 6th pick and cheer him on and welcome him to the Canucks. I for one wanted Nylander but I am very happy we did get Virtanen and am excited to see his development. It just sucks to see so many so called Canucks fans jumping right off the band wagon because there "guy" didn't get picked so everyone else sucks.
  6. Donald Brashear. You must have been hit in the head by McSorley too cause your comments are completely laughable. Where in the blue hell do you come up with your posts? Garrison was a horrible signing right from the beginning. Way overpaid for one good year in Florida and then he can't skate or hit the broad side of a barn. Granted I don't think we got much in a trade for him but we didn't retain any salary and got a massive hit off the payroll for a guy with a no trade clause. Do you really believe everything you hear???? Shinkaruk's name has come up in RUMORS. That's what they are is RUMORS. Hell, if Dreger is the one starting the rumor about the Canucks 9.9 times out of 10 you know it's not true. (And I have no idea who started these RUMORS). But yes I would trade Shinkaruk too, if it got us a better player. No need to be so angry and negative. Be happy the Canucks got a really good prospect. Go Canucks Go!
  7. Holy freakin %@!#!!! Seriously, what is wrong with some of the posters here?!?!?! "What a bad day for the Canucks" "BUST!" "ANYONE BUT VIRTANEN NOOOOOO!!!" Just some of the idiotic posts not 5 minutes after the newest Canuck has been picked. Clearly none of you are true Canuck fans. Virtanen is exactly what the Canucks need...crazy speed, with an excellent shot and likes to play physical. Is there anyone remotely like that in the organization???? Give your heads a shake and wake up. The kid is 18 years old and nobody knows how any of these young men will turn out including those that were chosen before him. Welcome to the Canucks, Jake. Well done Benning. What a great day.
  8. One of the worst things for a 17/18 year old prospect is being labeled as being like "x" NHL player. These KIDS are just that KIDS!!! It is ridiculous for anyone to compare them to said player. The kids may have similar traits such as size, skating, position...but at that age you cannot stick them with a label of being the next Kessel, Kane, Benn, etc. Way too much pressure for these kids. Let them develop into their own player. Case in point...whatever happened to Lindros being the next Gretzky???? Never really worked out that way. All these KIDS will develop in their own way. Some may become stars and some may not. You never know that in 10-15 years we may say some other prospect looks like the next Ehlers. Which once again would not be fair. As for Ehlers...don't know much about him but it sounds like he is a smart, skilled player. Something that the Canucks sorely need in the organization. That being said, I still think that Nylander has the highest hockey IQ and many say he has the most talent in the entire draft. If I were to choose between Ehlers and Nylander I would take Nylander every time. Some have pointed out that Nylander has not played on North American ice and his skills would not work here because of the difference in size and that the North American game is too rough for him. Okay so he has not played the North American game. To be honest, not one of the players the Canucks draft at 6 will be playing in the NHL for at least a few years. Now if the Canucks select Nylander hopefully they would be able to convince him to move over to play in the AHL. He has already been playing against men in Sweden. (Playing against men already is a huge advantage for Nylander) However, I would guess he would probably stay one more year in Sweden then make the move to the AHL.
  9. I can see a number of possibilities happening at the draft. (only one of the following will happen, obviously) The Canucks take either Virtanen or Nylander (think he is gonna be scary good) Trade up to get Reinhart or Ekblad Trade Kesler to Anaheim for a package that includes the 10th pick and they take 2 of Virtanen/Nylander/Ehlers if all still available.
  10. DownUndaCanuck!!!! That was some serious rant. I agree with some of what you say. Burrows has been declining in recent years as has most of this roster. I agree he should no longer be playing with the twins. In fact I think it's is finally time the team splits up the twins to maximize the TEAMS assets. Burrows should be playing on the 3rd line where he is most effective playing a strong defensive game where he can add some offense. He should NOT be on the power play at all. Penalty kill and 3rd line duty for Burrows. The issue then is that he is being paid well beyond what a 3rd line penalty killer should make. Unfortunately for the Canucks, they currently have an abundance of similar type players in Higgins, Hansen, Richardson, Mathhias, Santorelli (if he resigns) Booth, etc. For the Canucks to contend and make the playoffs, none of these players should be playing in the top six. Outside of say Richardson and maybe Matthias, none of these mentioned players are physical enough to be fourth liners either. Hansen used to be the perfect 3rd/4th liner with his speed and forechecking but once he was put into a top six role he even admitted he changed his game. Too bad because a 3rd line of Burrows-Santorelli-Hansen would be extremely effective. To change the make up of the team at least 2 of these players will have to be moved somehow. Interesting times are coming. Hopefully the new "regime" has the courage and smarts do be able to make some serious moves to change the core and culture of this team. Younger, faster, more skilled. If that means moving Burrows (a heart and soul core player for this team for years) through trade or buyout so be it.
  11. The entire season was a complete and utter disaster. Unfortunately, it started a number of years ago with Mike Gillis. Hindsight is 20/20 but ownership should have seen something wrong with Gillis a couple years back when he was crapping the bed with the goalie situation. What a HUGE distraction that was for nearly 3 seasons. That alone has to affect everyone involved including players, coaches, management, ownership and clearly the fan base. Unfortunately, we will never know the true underlying issues of events surrounding trade requests, destinations, trade discussions with other teams, etc. But my point is that all that crap led to an underachieving tram that hired a coach (not knowing who made the final decision on that either) that clearly had no interest in actually leading a team if the rumors are true abut Torts a) wanting to buyout Burrows, not talking to the AHL coach the ENTIRE season, c) not showing up for practices, d) only using video as a teaching tool and then not viewing video on upcoming opponents, e) incorrectly berating a player for being late to a team meeting that he was in fact early for. Sure Burrows had a very poor season and has struggle in the last 2 seasons but he is certainly a large part of the Canucks core and if he is able to bounce to even having a mediocre year next season then his cap hit is not all that bad. Just seems like a big shock that Burrows is the player that Torts singled out as wanting the team to buyout. The most glaring error made by Torts, and by extension Gillis, is the fact that he did not talk to Green in Utica once throughout the entire season. How can that even be????? I would have to think that for any successful franchise that the head coach of the NHL team and the head coach of there minor league team would or should be talking on a weekly basis. How on earth would the team ever know which players are excelling in certain areas. It's not always the highest scorer that needs to be called up. Between Torts not talking to Green and his fiasco in Calgary, management should have let him go well before the season even started. How on earth did Gillis not know about all of these issues throughout the season???? Did he not discuss any of this with Torts? Did Gillis even talk to Green throughout the year? What a total farce this entire year was. Thank goodness that both of these guys are gone as it pretty clear to me that neither of these guys had any clue what was happening in this organization.
  12. Never seeing Ehlers actually play, everything I have read and heard of about Ehlers is that he is a small to average sized prospect with great skill but lacks some defensive awareness. I do believe that what the Canucks truly need in the prospect pool is high-end skill. A player that has speed and can score. What prospect out of the top 5 has the most skill? May be the best player in the entire draft? From what I have heard that player is Nylander. He has extreme talent which many say could make him eventually being the best player out of this draft. However, you also hear that he has attitude issues. Personally, I believe the best pick for the Canucks is Virtanen but if you are going to go for the player with more of a skill package rather than size why wouldn't the Canucks go for the guy that some project to have the highest ceiling and the most skill in Nylander. (And for the poster that keeps referring to Nylander as a girl...GROW UP!!!!. Who cares what someone looks like. I remember people saying Bure looked like he wore lipstick but nobody ever gave a crap cause he was one hell of a hockey player). I would much rather the Canucks choose Nylander over Ehlers but Virtanen still has amazing speed, can really put the puck in the net and uses his size effectively. Virtanen would certainly bring a lot of excitement to the Canucks if he were able to translate his current game to the NHL in a couple of years.
