I live in far west of Calgary which I really love.  My back yard is forest, so it doesn’t feel like the city but I’m still only a 15 min train ride down town.  If I want to go to Banff it’s a quick 60 min drive to enjoy ski hills or all the awesome hiking trails.  But with that said I’m not glued to any city. We been considering even moving further south into Okatoks area to get even more bang for our dollar.

While we may not get the exact mountain/ocean views that Vancouver has. We get to own a nice place, we still get to enjoy a lot of great outdoors and the big win is the extra income, to spend on whatever we want. Mostly it’s used to travel as much as vacation days allows. We’ve been all over the world in the last 7 years splurging on some really amazing trips and creating life long memories.  We typically go on 2-3 big trips a year, from Italy, to Japan, to France, Maui, Mexico…etc.  Experiences I’d never be able to enjoy/afford if I was house poor.

    The trips sound amazing.

You are right about life style choices. I would live in a box if it means I'll be living near in a community of people that I actually want to call neighbours.  But seeing different parts of the world is also important.

Vancouver has always just been a vacation city for me (I actually like Victoria more), I’ve never had any real desire to live there long term for the simple fact that the pro’s don’t outweigh the con’s.  So many places around Canada that may not provide all exact equivalent in scenery but allow you to live a much fuller life.  If money was never an object and you didn’t have to work overtime just to break even, then yes Vancouver would be a nice spot but that’s not the reality for most.  I don’t know why people put themselves in such a financial strain to stay in any city. I guess it’s all personal preference.  Personally I’d much rather live in another city (that also has beauty) and get so much more in life for my dollar.  It really makes you question what’s important in life.  Living next to an ocean that you can barely afford get to take advantage of, or being able to visit fly out the ocean whenever you want and having money left over to still traveling elsewhere and see the beauty the WORLD has to offer.

For anyone that lives in Vancouver, maybe you can help me understand.  What is it that keeps you there?  Family? Financially secure? Love for a Job?

My second question would be how much of your net income goes into paying rent/mortgage + utilities?

Part of me thinks exactly the way you do.

And good questions. May I ask where you live?

Skytrain ends in Whalley.  The furthest east station is at King George (136) and 98.  There is a plan to extend to Langley along Fraser Highway but only money to go as far as 160.  I'll believe it when I see it.

There is a train going north of the river as far as Mission with limited stops.

Transit is so so south of the river so you really need a car to get around.  The commute from downtown to Abby in the afternoon rush hour is 1:25

The problem with Vancouver is that the pay from jobs don't match the cost of real estate or rents

    This is the problem.

Vancouver has sort of become a retirement home and investment parking spot for people all over the place.

I have been told that Arizona is a great place to live. The heat is dry and is very tolerable.

    Florida... well, it's Florida.

Most of my wife’s family and friends live in Coquitlam, most of their houses are 1 million and above.

Those will surely be cheaper than Vancouver, but probably still cost you an arm and a leg. Langley does have the east-most stop of the Skytrain around 200th street, which is west Langley.

Took a quick look at MLS... seems like prices in Coquitlam is somewhat in line with central Toronto's. That seems to be a measuring stick for me.

    Still very expensive.

Miss nothing about the rainy winters. Summer? I don’t particularly miss it, mostly because summers are pretty much great in most places (developed countries in mean). We visit every summer, but that’s to see family. Otherwise, I’m good taking vacations to a lot of other places. I actually don’t find taking a vacation to Vancouver to be anything tremendously memorable.

If skiing, I prefer Big White or Colorado Springs to Blackcomb (though I do like Blackcomb. For summer/hot vacations, I prefer most places outside of Canada than being here. The only city I’m consistently impressed with on a regular basis is Montreal. Never had an underwhelming visit.

Perhaps this doesn't count as underwhelming:

But otherwise yeah it's a beautiful city as well.

You can definitely have an easier time finding jobs in Vancouver than further out, but the rent does skyrocket. I personally never plan to live further west than Langley and my rent is considerably cheaper than $2k. Still very beautiful even further east and far less traffic too, especially if you go as far as Abbotsford or Chilliwack.

Not even Coquitlam or Port Moody?

It would nice to at least have train service to downtown.

  8. Hello,

So I recently visited Vancouver from Toronto, and I have to tell you guys, Vancouver is a beautiful place. I used to live there when I was a kid but didn't really appreciate how beautiful it is until after spending the last 20+ years of my life in Toronto. I would like to consider the possibilities of moving 'back' to Vancouver again. I have friends and family there so network wise it won't be a huge adjustment.

The thing is, rents are so expensive in Vancouver, compared to Toronto. And from what I have heard, jobs don't pay that well (relative to rents and other living expenses) and career opportunities are limited. A very modest one-bedoom condo is like $2000 in rent. You guys aren't a financial hub like we are. So how do people do it? How do you folks afford anything over there?

How much money does one need to make in Vancouver to allow a 'decent' bachelor's life?

like mentioned by the previous posts... this idea that nobody saw nobody knew until after the game is a flat out lie and just damage control by management because the media and fans are calling for heads to fly.  There were 15 minutes left in the third when EP was taken out. No one had a look at what happened in those 15 minutes? Your best player gets taken out and wobbles off the ice and out of the game and no one takes a look at what happened? YA RIGHT LOL

Even if we were to believe this nonsense... it doesn't change the fact that they knew EP was hit hard enough to be taken out of the game, this should of elicited a response from the team to up their own physicality and at least start hitting and finishing their check on every shift of every play. Didn't have to be reckless retribution or a line brawl, but any self respecting team has to up their physicality when their best player gets taken out whether or not it's a clean or dirty play.

Pure damage control, let's hope for the sake of our prospects that behind closed doors Green and the rest of the team got the real message.

I don't know... the year when Domi took out Neidermeyer in the playoffs no one noticed until Stevens screamed his lungs out from the penalty box.

Times were different back then, but it's not inconceivable that they truly didn't see it.

Green says "You're not going to do anything, Antoine. Just play the game, Elias will recover. We need the two points."

The 2 points we got will cost us many many points in the future. That's all I gotta say about that.

    Hopefully DOPS come through.

F you Matheson. F u the whole FRIKKIN Panthers organization for hiring this piece of rövhål. I’m confident that this is light concussion but no point in having him back in the game early.

These wannabe GOONS think they need to show the rookies “who’s the tougher guy”. Eat the darker side of the lower part of my back.

Crosby, McDavid, Matthews, Pettersson, etc, the FUTURE of this sport. Single handedly possibly had their careers shortened by this type of low life wannabes. This is not going to stop unless someone makes a bloody statement. You’re out 15-20 games. Why?

    1. You’re a nobody in the NHL

    2. You’re damaging the sport and league

    3. You can’t play FRIKKIN FAIR U ARSE

Don't know how the Panther gave him an 8 year 30something million contract. Goldy, Sven, and Petey turned him inside out multiple times.

You don't think Bo coming out right after the EP hit and scoring the winner and then helping dhit the Panthers down is the best response?

He would've tried to win anyways with or without Petey's injury.

It's good that we've won, but pain and detriments to Matheson's ability to earn are the best deterrents.

This is why I wanted Zack MacEwen on the team. He's been one of Utica's best players so far, put granny at Center and call up the big fella.

Zach can enforce too. I hope he is eventually good enough to play for Vancouver full time.

Benning really needs to get an agitator to draw the other team's frustrations away from our stars. We need players of the Matt Cooke or Jarko Ruutu or Burrows before the Sedin line elk.

Cooke was always one of my favs when he was here.

This matter is going to be left up to the league.  This is the way it should be.  Players on the ice shouldn't feel as though they need to exact revenge on dirty plays.  Player Safety should take care of that.  Unfortunately, they fail much of the time.  With the Wilson 20 game suspension, I think that very slowly, discipline is getting better.  When players decide to send a message it often back fires as we saw when Hamonic was injured by Gudbranson.  And sometimes it goes horribly wrong as we saw in the Moore-Bertuzzi incident.  So what I have said should happen in an ideal world.  It is not an ideal world but a message needs to be sent about this even if it is only a fine.

    They should.

Whoever takes liberties at our players needs to pay the price on the ice, a price that would have an impact on the perpetrator's health.

If DOPS does something, great. But can't rely on them.

    No, you’re right.

It was an illegal play and a clear attempt to take the rookie phenom out of the game.

I’m saying, this is game 5 for EP. If this is the worst hit he ever receives, he should consider himself blessed. The play was dirty, and there was serious impact with the ice, but the fall likely isn’t as bad as we’re making it out to be. He’ll be dressed for the next game.

I hope so. Though if he is not 120% healthy, he should rest.

Bo should have took the hit no matter what. He passed and that is as much a commentary on the Sedin era as not. Bo came in under their tutelage. I am hoping he realizes this will be a new era and that players like EP40 will always be targets unless protected. IMHO the reaction has to be automatic not a vote on the bench or a coach saying "calm down'.

We need to protect our stars like how the Oilers protected Gretzky.

Imagine if it was Gretzky who received a can-opener / choke-slam combo, how would Marty McSorley react?

Well, yes. Brain trauma is difficult to gauge and can hit different people in different ways...

But despite being an illegal move, that was a pretty regular hockey play... I've hit the ice harder than that before.

If Baertschi hit the ice like that we'd be nowhere near as frenzied. It's only because it's our golden boy that we're all stressing.

    He'll be fine.

Remember the optics of Boeser sliding back to the bench because he couldn't stand? He played the next game.

EP40 needs to be protected, but he's not an acrylic fawn.

I don't see choke slams very often in the NHL.
