  1. I will not get drawn into discussing other Canadian clubs. Betman’s prime objective has been to increase the American fan base and revenue for the NHL. All NHL key staff know this. His tenure has also resulted in Canadian teams not winning the Cup, is this a coincidence? This is simple, the Canadian market is saturated. Earning extra revenue here is not a smart business plan if this is Betmans objective. The US market is dominated by Football, baseball and basketball. Betman knows that winning NHL teams bring fan/ TV revenue into the NHL. If he plays his cards right he CAN gain market share from other dominant US sports. Kerry Fraser went public and explained that refs would tilt games with PPs to keep them close ie keeping US TV audiences tuned in. If you can explain why he “blew the whistle” on this league behaviour I am interested to hear your view. He had nothing to gain as a retired respected NHL official, but highlighted that bias is present. For example, in 2011 the Canucks dominated every stat in the regular season. They were more skilled than the large US market Boston bruins, the bruins established that they could not beat the Canucks with skill in the first 2 games, the. turned to goon/ bully tactics. NHL staff understand their bosses priorities and allowed this to happen. The east coast media also played a very large role and made it popular to hate the Canucks which galvinized the behaviour of favouring the large US market. Even the CBC joined in, IMO the CBC behaved like lemmings. I for one will always support all Canadian teams in the playoffs and will not turn my back on them like the CBC did in 2011 with Vancouver. Another example is Betmans expansion policy which costs new entrants a huge amount of money but at the same time allows the new US teams to create a winning team through new expansion draft rules which favour new (US) teams entering the market. Vegas is a good example, Seattle will enjoy the same benefits. Where is Quebec? Betman’s behaviours and tone is consistent. This influences everyone who is on his payroll. For the Canucks to succeed they need to build a skilled team with significant toughness to self police themselves. This is the only way the Canucks will overcome the revenue bias.
  2. I’m not suggesting he will pay the same role as Gino Odjick. Enforcers no longer play in the NHL. Ferland is the toughest player in the squad at the moment, he knows fighting is part of his role. Just because he is playing in the top 6 doesn’t mean he shouldn’t stand up for his teammates. A player like Leivo or Baertchi could easily fill in for him during the 5 minutes he sits in the box during his 7 or 8 fights this season. Ferland will pick his moments. I like the toughness we have in the squad this year, especially when Roussel returns. Assigning a role like this to a pure enforcer is a thing of the past.
  3. If Bo is to become captain, he could set a stake in the ground with his teammates. I’m not suggesting he does this in every game, if Tierney iced for the game Horvat could have set the tone with the team. Re Ferland, he was brought in to play this role.
  4. This is an interesting point. What if the next questionable hit resulting in an injury to a Canucks player (with zero response from the DoPS) results in a fan based media blackout (protest). The TV ratings are observed by the NHL. This could be a decent way of dealing with the frustration, led by a local media outlet.
  5. The line up will dictate how Green reacts to this. I am guessing Horvat will have a go, closely followed by Ferland. Ring the bell.
  6. We also complied a long list of injuries in that series which took their toll in game 7. With the exception of Rome who received the NHLs longest SCF suspension and hurt us more than many might believe. The players you listed above all finished the series.
  7. Outside of the Sedins, Naslund, Bertuzzi....who else earns your respect Quoted? In my books, Burrows has my respect. His contributions are valid in many ways outside of just grapes and apples. We've opened up cap space with Prust and Higgins. Vrbata will go as well. In a similar way Bure finished off the flames in '94, there will always be a place in my books for Burrows who scored in game 7 OT to bury the Blackhawks. We need guys with heart and soul on the team to pass on the belief in the organisation. Burrows can do this and will still produce a decent return this year and next.
