I think in a couple years though (or as soon as this season) Stutzle will surpass both Hughes and Pettersson. That kid in Ottawa reminds me of Yzerman.

You're aware Stutzle cherry picks constantly by refusing to help out on the defensive end? Something he and his captain have in common. That team's systems are a joke and all it does is overinflate their offensive numbers.

Barkov,  Stone and Eichel are pretty darned good too on both sides of the puck, Crosby is Crosby still.   Also see EP as a guy who will just get better and better.  Eventually he will get some hardware for it too.

I doubt the dinosaurs who have voting rights will be awake past 11 pm to watch Pettersson play enough to consider him winning it.

    Not a surprise that

Gotcha.   Doesn't mean Kesler wasn't a two way force because he for sure was.   Kesler almost willed the US to win in 2010 in the Olympics.  Guy was all hustle, and never given any skilled wingers to play with, not top tier ones anyways.    He was awesome.   And better than Maholtra.   If your going to win a Selke with 40 points, you better be extraordinary.   Do think they've lost touch a little on that to a degree.    Stone is the guy i've noticed most the past 7 years or so, and Barkov.    Despite that Bergeron just kept piling them up.

Kesler was a force to be reckoned with, in his prime. What a joy to watch on both ends of the puck. Defensively, I wouldn't say he was better than 2011 Malhotra,  but the fact we had both on our side was a massive strength. Pettersson being among those players, while being amongst the Hughes, Draisaitl, Kucherov, MacKinnons etc... on the offensive end, displays perfectly how special he is as a player. He is the most balanced elite forward in the game.

Bob Gainey.  Guy Carbanou, wouldn't say ever.  Bobby Clark near the end of his career.   Jere Lehtinen.   Mark Stone.     Kesler.   Bergeron.   There are loads of guys, who didn't get top points in the league, but win Selkes or were regular finalists.    Kesler himself won his most productive season, but was a finalist five times (think in a row) scoring 50ish points.    Datsyuk and Federov were guys who won with a lot of points.   Maybe we've got that?

Sorry, that was not my point. I'm saying that the actual defensive players (3Cs for example) don't get credit for the Selke nowadays. Yes, some elite defensive-minded players got Selke nominations and wins (although Kesler finally winning it the year Malhotra took over his defensive duties is quite laughable, shows how much the media watch the Canucks play), which makes Pettersson finishing in the top 10 in both points AND Selke votes all the more impressive imo. But don't mistake it, Selke votes are based purely on which forwards with high points also happen to be good defensively. After that, don't even get me started on how it's the most reputation-based trophy out there.

Rest of my post didn't show up.   Voted EP anyways,  because well he's our guy.   EP was better defensively last season, one season isn't a career of course.    Jack Hughes was the better player at 22.   As for being shafted that's not true.   Stone is much better defensively.   And has been since he was in his mid -20's, not even close really, that's the bar I have for those guys.  Centres get more attention than they sometimes should, because they take face-offs.   Actually don't think Bergeron was a deserving winner last year,  because of his TOI.    EPs got a ways to go to win a Selke.   Marner was awesome on TO's PK, the main reason it was effective.  There are actually quite a few guys that are very good on both sides of the puck.   Feel EP came right in where he should have, no small thing either.

As for the media.   That's a pretty bold statement (top five forward).    Even top five center is bold, let alone forward.    Let's see how he does this year first.   EP has one solid season under his belt, start to finish.

So does Jack Hughes but he's being labelled a top 10 player in the league.

You'd be hard pressed to find me a 100 point player that ends up top 10 in Selke voting. That's top 10 in scoring and top 10 in defensive prowess (amongst the elite forwards of course, since actual defensive forwards NEVER get credit for the Selke). You got Marner, who's a winger, which loses him just a tad of value in the discussion.

So for me... top 10 in points + top 10 on the defensive end for forwards = top 5 forward.

Before I answer, one was just ranked in the top 10, by THN, the other low 20's (their top 50 current players).   Don't need to say who they picked in the top ten.   A couple points separated them, ones a few years younger and scored more goals, on a better team.   If we were NJ fans, who do you think would win this poll?

If we had to build around one player, have to go with the one that  got 99 points, think 43 goals but won't look it up.   The kids only 22.

Actually don't know if that's the right choice either.

Pettersson was better offensively while having 20% less OZS%, on a much weaker team, and a year where he couldn't bury his one timer for half the season. THEN you add the elite defense, where he honestly got shafted ending up 7th in Selke voting, after being a projected nominee during the entire first 3/4 of the season.

Basically, Pettersson's offense is better than Hughes' (and much better than the 3 point difference indicates), all while playing defense at an elite rate.

Pettersson is objectively the better player. Most voters and people who create lists don't stay up until 1am to watch Pettersson play.

This is no slight on Hughes, as he's an elite forward that's incredibly fun to watch. Pettersson is just a top 5 forward in the league and the media just haven't accepted it yet, mostly because they don't watch him play.

Noah Hanifin Reverses Course, Open To Extension In Calgary

September 13th, 2023 at 12:44pm CST • By Josh Erickson

Speaking with reporters, including Sportsnet 960’s Pat Steinberg at the NHL’s media tour in Las Vegas, Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin said he’s “absolutely” willing to consider an extension with the team.

Hanifin, 26, was unwilling to sign an extension in Calgary at the beginning of the offseason, according to reporting from TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. Along with Mikael Backlund and Elias Lindholm, who have expressed a conditional willingness to extend depending on the team’s performance this season, Hanifin is slated for unrestricted free agency next summer. He’s coming off a 2022-23 season in which he played 81 of 82 games, registered seven goals and 31 assists for 38 points, recorded a 53.0% Corsi for at even strength, and averaged a career-high 22:39 per game. LeBrun said earlier this summer Calgary was likely to trade Hanifin – something that didn’t come to fruition, and he’s now projected to start 2023-24 alongside potential captaincy candidate Rasmus Andersson on the team’s top pairing.

If they do extend him, it certainly won’t be on a discount – as is the likely scenario with Backlund and Lindholm. With extensions unlikely to be reached before the start of the season, Evolving Hockey projects an eight-year, $7.5MM AAV deal for Hanifin to remain in Calgary. Their model also predicts an eight-year extension at $8.4MM per season for Lindholm, but recent reporting from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman suggests that figure will be closer to $9MM if Lindholm does extend. For Backlund, they predict a four-year deal at around $5.5MM per season. For a team with little to no salary cap flexibility this summer, is extending all three even financially feasible if the players remain open to it?

The short answer is barely. CapFriendly currently projects the Flames with roughly $35.5MM in cap space for the 2024-25 season with a roster size of just 11 players, assuming the Upper Limit rises from $83.5MM to $87.5MM as projected. Taking the figures above means re-signing all three of Backlund, Hanifin and Lindholm would cost around $22MM, bringing that cap space figure to $13.5MM with a roster size of only 14. That would involve filling out the rest of their roster with contracts averaging less than $1.5MM AAV apiece, and it’ll likely take significantly more than that number to retain other pending UFA defenders like Chris Tanev and Nikita Zadorov as well as re-signing pending RFA forward Dillon Dubé.

This is obviously such a cover-up. We all know they want out. Calgary hasn't found a fit yet and don't want the media to make a big deal about it. All 3 will be shipped when either Calgary find the right price, or they become desperate to recover any kind of return to the closest bidder.

Well not the next expiration but he can and will find his way out of Vancouver if he actually wants.

Pettersson has representatives that can get things done for him. If he wants out of Vancouver in the next couple of seasons, he will find a way

Luckily for us, any way out fathomable is beneficial for us in the long run. I do think that management is avoiding that at all costs, so I'm not worried either way.

    https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/winnipeg-jets-name-adam-lowry-captain/

Centre Adam Lowry was named the Winnipeg Jets new captain on Tuesday.

Lowry is the third Jets captain since the team moved from Atlanta to Winnipeg in 2011. He follows Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler, who served as captain for five and six years respectively.

"When I found out, I was pretty excited, almost a little speechless," said Lowry in a statement. "It’s something growing up you kind of can dream about and something that seems almost unattainable.

"Getting to be a captain of a Canadian NHL team is pretty special and something I’m really looking forward to."

Lowry scored 13 times and added 23 assists for the Jets last season. He has 93 goals and 111 assists over nine NHL seasons, all with Winnipeg.

Lowry, from St. Louis, was selected 67th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

The 30-year-old was an alternate captain for the first time in the 2022-23 season along with Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele. Morrissey and Scheifele will both wear the "A" again this year.

The Jets didn’t have a captain last season as head coach Rick Bowness and his staff wanted more voices in the dressing room

"Mark, Adam and Josh did a great job in the room which is what we wanted," said Bowness. "We all know Adam is the first guy on the ice to stick up for his teammates.

"He's a true professional, he has total respect from every player on the team, every player around the league and certainly from the coaching staff as well. We just feel at this point it’s the right time to name Adam as our captain."

Hmmm, good points. OK, I accept that.

I'm trying hard to get over the Miller not being captain...just felt like the right fit for a team trying to shed the easy to play against image.

I agree, Miller was an excellent candidate. His voice will be heard both on and off the ice, since he is a big part of the leadership group.

I still think Miller was by far the best choice. Is he moody? Sure...he can be. Has been. Do you want a guy who is passionate/all in and wears his heart on his sleeve? Doesn't give a sh...ishkabob what people think? Is all about this team and wants to win so badly that, at times, it catches up with him? He's human.

The only thing that worries me about Quinn is that he's a "brother" to others. Can't have that...when you hit the ice it's all about friends becoming foes. We want a team that takes no prisoners. Tkachucks need face fulls of glove...this is a war not a party.

Will support him 100% in the role of captain moving forward. But no more nice guys...they finish last.

If you can get Tkachuk smiling during a scrum, and not antagonize and bait some of our players into penalties... isn't that a win? The 2 biggest rats (I say that in the nicest way possible since both Tkachuk's are crazy good players) in the league LOVE and RESPECT our captain more than anybody else in the league. That's a W in my books.

Don't think Money is the real problem, Pettersson is going to get paid regardless where he ends up.

If Canucks offer him 12 for 8 years, another team is probably willing to offer him 12.5 million for 7.

    Every rests in this season

Let a team offer that, we'll take the 4 1st rounders :canucks:

This whole ordeal has so many people (not counting you here, just what I see everywhere) forgetting that EP is a RFA, and we have all the control. I almost dare a team to sign him to an offer sheet. It can only be beneficial for us.

is it sustainable? We pay Pete 12 next year and the OEL buyout starts kicking our ass. How much do we pay Hronek? Whats left on the bone?  Sure Myers Cole and Beau come off it may offset but I don't see how we trend up? Alvin is going to have to do some real GMing not just fritter around the edges.

Penny pinching our stars, when we have 5 wingers making 4.5 mil or more, is not the way to build a serious contender. Pettersson is the most talented all-around player we've ever had in our organization. Pay him as such, no matter the cost. In the meantime, we have Myers and 2 of Pearson/Boeser/Garland/Beauvillier to shed, and that will more than make up for Hronek and Pettersson's raises.

I love that JT gets it....get here, start early with the boys and get a running start instead of starting from behind and trying to "settle in" as the season gets going.

    Yep, captain's right.

Some of the guys are already here teaming up. Almost time to trade in those golf clubs for hockey sticks.

I think Juulsen is the wild card.  If he can play with Hughes, then we are set up pretty well.  Here's hoping...

This. I don't think people appreciate just how well Juulsen seems to fit with Hughes. It's one of those things that shouldn't work, but somehow does (kind of like Burr with the Sedins). Physical and quick dman that seems to thrive alongside a PMD like Quinn. It's worth another extended look, especially with Bear being out for 4 more months.
