I will be so pumped if this happens. He instantly becomes the best we offensive dman we have had in many many years. If Hughes is better, then that is a huge bonus.
If it's Virt, Stecher, 2020 lottery protected first I feel it is a very fair deal. I get that it would hurt to lose those guys, but it should cost to get one of the 10 best offensive dmen in the league.
If Stecher is included then it has to be Virtanen, Stetch, and 2020 2nd round pick (turns into 1st in 2020 if we make the playoffs)

Just a series of rumors that if happened would amount to a total revamping,
From TO - Marleau, Kapanen and a 4th for a 5th round pick - I could live with this, but doubt TO gets rid of Kapanen just to move Marleau. They will just keep them.
From Edmonton - Jesse Puljujarvi for a 2nd round pick - I would do this
From Edmonton - Lucic and 2nd for Eriksson with 1/2 retention - not okay with this at all unless we are moving up in the draft or getting their 8th
From NYR - Horvat and later pick for #2 overall - HELLLLLLL NO
From Buffalo - Ristolainen for Tanev and Juolevi - HELLLL NO as Juolevi has the tools to be much better than Risto. Theres a reason hes been on the block for close to 2 years
From Free Agency - Myers at 6 years 7.5 mil - Way too much money and term for a player of his calibre
Offer sheet Brandon Carlo 3.0 mil for 4 years - easily matched
Wrong player in Tampa offer sheet - Point. - they match anything

Finally draft day is here
Podk, Krebs, Boldy for me. Would love Dach or Turcotte but likely wont be there for us at 10.
Lets see some trades, some additional draft picks, lets say our goodbyes to some of our Canucks and welcome the future.
Hoping for an additional 1st, an additional 2nd, Krebs, Barrie, Connoly and Johansson this off-season.

Is he though? I was just on the Hockey News and they list him as an "Excellent offensive defenseman and playmaker". If THN says it, it's gospel...….
Honestly though, he's upper tier for sure, but elite? That's Karlsson, Burns, Doughty, Letang territory.
I agree he may not be the same as the guys you mentioned above but hes still a 60 point defenseman that can actually play defense. Hes the perfect mentor for Hughes as well. But my biggest point is we do not have the assets to get those ELITE defenseman. Boeser 1 for 1 would not return those elite guys. We are too far in the rebuild to have reasonable expectations of drafting one of those guys ourselves as I now see Vancouver as a playoff bubble team.

The only player that I would want the Canucks to move up for is Byram (excluding Hughes and Kakko obviously). Otherwise, it seems to be such a mixed bag that they will get a great player at 10 no matter what.
I don't think he wants a great player. I think hes going for the best player in that tier and that's likely Turcotte (my pick) or Zegras

So settle for a slightly older, not so elite defenseman, and end up playing him $7-7.5 a year? If you're offering up the 2020 first round pick, make it count and get a core piece.
We shall see.
Are you saying Barrie isn't elite?

Woo, who is how many years away from the NHL? Juolevi isn't big (fairly tall, but not heavy), nor is he all that physical (to my knowledge). And having the hope that Tryamkin returns is nice (I'd be all for it) but doesn't fill a roster spot.
regards, G.
G, my dude. You seem like good people but you gotta open your mind. Just because we don't have the assets now, doesn't mean we cant get them. Just because were going after a smaller defenseman, doesn't change the direction or makeup of the team that JB wants to achieve. Read his comments on the St. Louis Blues. My dude, just think about it. Take your time. Big things are coming, big things. Hopefully this small thing in Barrie first, but then definitely BIG BIG THINGS
regards, SP.

I'd like to address a few concerns on the board
- Barrie is old - no one wins the cup with a team made up of young guys - just ask Edmonton - (Pietroangelo won his cup in his 11th season)
- Too much to give up - you don't get 60 point defenseman, especially RHD for throw in's like Sutter, Baertschi, etc. You have to give to get.
- We wont have a 1st rounder next year - other players on this roster can be traded to recoup a 1st rounder. Tanev, Stetcher, players we may sign as UFA's
- Barrie is too small - Yes he is, hes also a 60 point defenseman that can push the puck and control the pace of the game and his defensive skills are much better than Risto, Myers, and Gardiner so he'll definitely help us in the 30 or so one-goal games we lost last year
- We can get Risto - no you cant. Risto would command a Horvat minimum and even if they don't, we don't have the assets to acquire him. Buff is in same position as us
- I would rather have X - we likely don't have the assets for whatever player you're thinking about
- Virtanen Neely blah blah - Huge fan of Virtanen but his game wont translate here in Vancouver. If he does become Neely elsewhere doesn't mean he would have here. Different system, different coaches, teammates, playing style etc. Personal opinion he tops out as a Raffi Torres 25/25 guy
- We need to continue to build through the draft - yes we do, JB has shown he can still pick out talent in later rounds. Draft picks are valuable and can be used to improve the team. We can draft in the top 10 for the next 4 years and turn into the Oilers or start moving those picks for established star players in the league that will help us compete and give the young guys a taste of the playoffs.
- We're still rebuilding - no we are not, as of this year our rebuild is over. Rebuilds don't consist of drafting 30 players over 10-12 years before you begin to compete. The holes we have in our top 6 and defense will hopefully be addressed this year through our 1st and 2nd round picks and additional assets we may acquire through free agency and trade. 2 top 6 wingers, 1-2 top 4 defenseman
But we're a lottery team for another few years - we don't look like a lottery team. These are all players that are trending up or have already established themselves. Add a few free agents and you've put together an admirable team.
Pettersson
Boeser
Horvat
Hughes
Barrie
Edler
Tanev
Markstrom
Demko
Woo
Juolevi
Gaudette
Madden
10th OA
40th OA
People need to stop stressing so much. We get smaller now but we can get bigger through other moves, we lost a draft pick now but we can recoup a 1st later, etc, etc, etc, etc.

An older, more expensive guy.
Older? yes
More expesnive? more than likely
more physical? oh absolutely
offensive talent? 25-30 goal scorer on Pettersson's wing
btw I am not a fan of Ferland and love Virtanen but Barrie for JV and 2020 1st is not a deal I can pass up. Im confident we get him signed to a long term deal as soon as the trade is announced. He is a local kid and may love the idea of playing for his hometown team.

If you want a laugh go read hfboards colorado. They are all crying and moaning and saying "fire sakic into the sun" if virtanen and 2020 1st is the return for barrie. Hahaha....
Most of them are morons. They are expecting more value than Karlsson and Trouba for an inferior player with the same contract status (pending UFA). The 2020 pick is likely in the 15 to 20 range and I put Virtanen slightly ahead of Pionk as a player. Trouba is the better player, so why would we give up more for Barrie?

So if this is the trade, how does Vancouver deal with the fact that it, once again, is getting smaller, and less physical?
Certainly Barrie is a talented puck-moving defenseman, but he's pretty small, and having a defense with him, Stecher, and Hughes, while exciting from a offensive perspective, would get manhandled.
You add Jett Woo, Olli Juolevi, and Nikita Trymakin to the defense core
You add Lucic to the 4th line along with MacEwan - well maybe not this part but the top part for sure

STEP AWAY FROM THE BONG!!!
Goldobins cap is minimal. We essentially send no salary back. Pick up 4 years of an underperforming player at 6m cap. The 8th would be the minimum I’m asking for if Im helping them clear 6 m
leave my bong out of this

Mutual termination a possibility here? Would allow him to sign anywhere he would like. Maybe Dallas signs him to a 1 year $3-4mill show me contract. Obviously this happens after his bonus is paid out. He's really only leaving 9 million on the table with a mutual termination. If he can recoup 3-4 million elsewhere, its less of a hit. He gets to play where he wants, and MOST IMPORTANTLY we get rid of the contract and can make something happen
Goldobin for Lucic and 8thOA
10thOA, Tanev for Barrie and 16thOA
Rathbone for Clarkson and 17thOA --> flip 17thOA with additional piece to move up as high as possible within the top 15
Draft - Krebs, Seider, Nehwook
Place Clarkson on LTIR after the beginning of the season
We can still move Sutter to Anaheim or Florida who I've heard have interest with retention to increase our return
We can move Baertschi, Granlund, Spooner, Schaller to whoever will take them or bury them in the minors to clear up the space for Lucic. (Baertschi and Spooner would do it)
Sign Brett Connoly as a UFA
Sign March Johansson as UFA
Sign Anton Stralman as UFA
Johansson Pettersson Boeser
Pearson Horvat Virtanen
Connoly Gaudette Lucic
Roussel Beagle Motte
Edler Stralman
Hughes Barrie
Juolevi Stetcher

The trade ideas I see on this forum blow me away.
We give a 2nd and Sutter with salary retained.....fir Tyson Barrie.
Where do we sign?
I amended the trade on another thread
It likely is Hutton, Sutter (50%), 2nd in 2020 (1st if Barrie resigns) and a prospect like Rathbone or Lind.

Only problem is... Nobody is going to cap dump a 74 point winger
Well last year he went for a 2nd,4th,5th to Fla and returned even less when he went to SJ.
Van
Barrie
Col
Hoffman
Fla
2nd in 2020 (Van)
4th in 2019 (Van)
Sutter (50%)

Hoffman seemingly gets flipped more than a mattress at a brothel.
Fla is looking to clear space
We have space
We need a top 4 defenseman
Col has a top 4 defenseman
Col needs a top 6 winger
We don't have a top 6 winger
Fla now has space
We now have Hoffman
We now have Barrie
Col now has Hoffman

They already have Soderberg as C3.
Zadorov is a LD like Hutton. They also have Cole on LD signed at 4.25M for another 2 years as well as Girard.
Soderberg is 34 this year. He could ver well be moved to the 4th line.
Dmen play their off side all the time. They could keep Cole and move Zadorov in a package for something else or move him for futures. I get what youre saying, I just don't see where any of there are serious barriers to a potential Barrie trade.

Hoffman still has another year doesn't he? Why would we give up assets for him, unless it's a guy like Goldy or something?
It likely will be for picks and prospects as they make room for Panarin and Bob.
Maybe we can swing a 3 way with Col and Fla, Col gets top 6 winger, Van gets top 4 dman, Fla gets a 3c and saves 3.5million in cap space along with 2 picks.
To Van
Tyson Barrie
To Col
Mike Hoffman
To Fla
2nd in 2020 (Van)
4th in 2019 (Col)
Sutter (50%)

barrie is another shrimp D man and that is not what this teams needs imo. I hope this does not happen.
Barrie is another shrimp D man that controls the pace of the game, transitions the puck just as well as any dman in the league, can put up 50-60 points and can actually play defense. This is what this team needs imp. I hope this happens.

Perhaps all the rumours we are hearing are interconnected. We are pursuing Hoffman (and allows Florida to nab Panarin and Bobrovsky), who we then flip for Barrie (Avs get a top 6 forward). Not sure where the Lucic and Zaitsev rumours fit in, but maybe for addition of picks/prospects to balance out deals.
I could see that happening. I think Florida is in search of a 3c to bolster their center depth. Maybe a 2nd, prospect and Sutter gets it done. We can then flip Hoffman for Barrie and a pick.

For what it is worth, Avs and Ducks both want to know more about Sutter. May mean nothing but who knows.....
I mentioned this on HF
Sutter (50%), Hutton, 2nd in 2020 (becomes a 1st if Barrie resigns) - maybe we have to add in a prospect like Lind/Gadjo/Goldy to make it work
for
BarrieJost plays 2C along with Kerfoot and Landeskog and Sutter takes on the 3C role. I still believe Sutter is a 20/20 guy when healthy and the best option for 3c at 2.19million. They can select Byram with their 4th and run Byram, Makar, Girard and Timmins as their top 4 along with Hutton and Zadarov as their bottom pairing. I overvalue Hutton and Avs fans likely undervalue him. His true value is likely in between. He is a young two way defenseman that likely hits 35-40 points on an Avs team and can step into the top4 if needed at a sub 4m cap hit.
They can trade their 16thOA for Hoffman out of Florida and run him on the top line with MacK and Raatanen.

Gostisbehere is comparable to a Barrie in size and point production and would be way cheaper.
Colin Miller would be a decent pick up, and way cheaper
Ghost is going to be much more expensive than Barrie. Ghost is a year younger and is signed for 3 more years at a measly 4.5 million or thereabouts and Barrie is looking to cash in on his next contract likely around the 7-8 mill range for 6-7 years (he'd be worth it for sure). Ghost has already eclipsed Barries highest point total of 59 points which came last year with his own 65 point season playing on a much less talented team than the Avs.
