You guys are putting way too much thought into my comments about Rafferty.  This isn't specifically about Rafferty, it's about Benning always being on the side of negotiating from a position of weakness.  It's about going 4 years to get Beagle signed. It's about having to throw in a 2nd and a 4th along with McCann to get Gudbranson.  It's about never convincing a player to waive his no trade clause.  Let's not forget that he was paying Sam Gagner over $3M a year to play for the Toronto Marlies against his own AHL team in a concession to his agent when sending him to the minors.  This is a small list of examples of weak negotiating skills and I'd like to hear some examples of where Benning showed strong negotiating skills.

I get that hfboards is primarily filled with Benning haters just as this board has a lot of Benning supporters.  But I don't get how anyone can objectively think that Benning is good at negotiating contracts and trades and why so many give him a pass on that.

Listen pleeease just answer my one question. Can you name one team that signs college free agents that doesn't burn a year of their contract? Just ONE please.

  2. The Brassard thing actually isn't that complicated, it doesn't matter if hypothetically he put up 100 points. If our scouts watched him and identified that his skating is not even close to nhl or ahl level, and that he hasn't made major strides in improving it, there's no reason to use a contract spot on him.

  3. When all of Lind, Gadjovich, Palmu, and Dahlen are struggling in the AHL after having really amazing seasons the year before, it looks bad on Trent Cull. Now is it technically possible that these four just happen to be not ready and it's more their fault and Cull is doing a decent job? Yeah I guess so. It's just that it should definitively be alarming that good prospects who took significant development strides the year before all look out of place in Cull's system. Honestly the worst thing that you can definitively pinpoint to Cull is having guys like Jasek randomly getting scratched many times despite having strong games the night before, it's just bewildering sometimes tbh.

  4. Any Matt Brassard watchers out there, could you let us know if this is more of a Carl Neill situation where he didn't get signed despite good numbers because his skating was not close to NHL level or has Brassard taken steps in that area of his game?

Yet he came up and scored three points in three games was plus 3 and went back down.

How does your argument hold water?

Wow man you got me, a 3 game sample size where Gaunce got really lucky goals totally destroys my entire point of him not being productive and looking like an offensive black hole from over a 100 game sample. Nice point bud.

  6. Gaunce is an offensive black hole, he has shown absolutely nothing in terms of production at the nhl level, he doesn't produce even near enough for a fourth line roll. This is the reality and it doesn't matter how much cdc complains or praises his ahl play.

  7. You can't just look at anecdotes and say "see these guys turned out fine so will Kole Lind". The reality is that these things are measured in terms of probabilities. Idk if you can instantly write off Kole Lind yet because he has only played 30 games and with limited ice time, but if he is struggling to produce by the end of this year and next year it seems pretty reasonable to say that "it's unlikely that he will be a top six nhl forward".

  8. Look at the Jordan Greenway goal, Del Zotto completely failed at physically containing him and by the end of the goal it looked like he was barely trying to challenge him. When you watch Canucks games pay attention to the breakouts, Del Zotto rarely makes a great pass that causes a scoring chance the other way, he seems simply content with making low risk low reward plays just to get it out of the blue line. He's not terrible, but he's not much more than a 6/7 Dman on a cup contending team.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and report Robb

I wonder how it all plays out with what is happening on the big club?

MDZ is gone sometime this year, but that still leaves...…

    1. Edler

    2. Hutton

    3. Pouliot

    Hughes

    Juolevi

    Brisebois

    and most likely

    Sautner

All needing a place to play next year....Joulevi and Hughes are waiver exempt next year...….

What do you think Robb, something has to happen according to your report.

    Thoughts?

I am very confident that on next year's opening roster (barring injuries) Tanev, Stecher, Hutton, Gudbranson, Juolevi, and Hughes our gonna be our starting 6.

Definitely the 100 point guy. Anyone who gets 65 points in this league will most likely command 6-7 mill salary. 100 point guy will command 10 mill salary unless you got him at a discount. Usually the generational guys MAKE the 65 point or 80 point guys too so if those guys get too pricey just swap them out with someone else. Look at Patrick maroon with edmonton.

Except the 100 point guy is making 12.5 mill........

  11. So when I was in grade 10 we received a presentation from an OHL player Connor Schlichting. During the Q&A session afterwards, the topic of work ethic came up, and Connor basically said that what he noticed during training was that generally the better NHL players put much more effort into training than everyone else. But then he said there was an exception of the Russian players on his team, that they didn't really train that much, but regardless were still really good because of how skilled they were. I was thinking back to this story today and went on Hockeydb, and surprisingly enough, found out that the year that he gave this story, none other than Nikolay Goldobin was the leading scorer on the team. Now it's also possible that he was talking about the other Russian import on the team, but just something to consider.

  12. I can understand the sentiment and desire for Jake to succeed. I want it to happen too. I'm not a fan of finding comparable stats and then saying things like "Jake can still turn out like X player". I think that one should watch how the player plays, and then look at what's holding him back, and use that analysis to make predictions. So when I look at Jake, I see a player who has a great shot, is super fast, and can throw amazing hits, but what's holding him back is his poor hockey iq; being at the right place in the right time, and his decision making when he has the puck. So now when Ferraro says that he sees Hansen as his ceiling, I can understand that because I don't really see how someone with Jake's hockey iq can make it past a third liner in the NHL. I want Jake to do well but in my mind this seems like the most logical prediction of Jake's ceiling at this moment.

Just when I think I've read some of the most non-intuitive posts recently....

Hey man it's the offseason and I was just having fun looking for Boeser comparables until I came across this lol. The vast majority had great careers but I came across this and thought, how $&!#ty would it be if our best prospect turned out like this guy? Not out of the realm of possibility technically speaking.

i think they end up on the same line with Elias...if that happens...how do you choose between (prime years):

    Pettersson;  35 G, 45 A

    Dahlen;        30 G,  50 A

    Boeser:        40 G,  40 A

....slight advantage to Boeser for the higher goal total....let's call it equal if it ends up that way anyway...!

IMO I don't think it's fair to compare Boeser and Dahlen. Boeser looks poised to become a star in the nhl, whereas I see Dahlen as a B+ prospect, where it is still up in the air whether or not he will make it to the nhl.

Canucks may have signed a couple dmen today, but the door is still open for OJ come October if he's ready. Beiga should be anything but guaranteed a roster spot, and Wiercioch is anything but a mainstay in any top 4 on a cheap contract. If OJ is ready, there shouldn't be much keeping him out of London. If no trades occur, and Biega and PW are earning their roster spots, then another year in London wouldn't be a terrible thing.

    Edler - Stecher

    Hutton - Tanev

    Del Zotto - Gudbrandson

Not sure how Juolevi can fit unless he spends a lot of time in the press box.

  16. I remember reading last year that Juolevi would have made the team last year if he was more physically mature, and he looked really good in preseason too. I don't think there's much to worry about this prospect, as long as he fills his frame, he is poised to be an NHL player.
