A week or so ago, I was VERY high on Kent Johnson.

Although I still am, I am now also of the belief that Johnson will need some coaching at the NHL level to improve his decision making ability.   In many ways, he’s like a guy that has all the tools in his toolbox, but doesn’t quite know what to do with them.

My opinion of Mason McTavish has also increased.

The guy who I’ve REALLY come around on however is Dylan Guenther.    This guy is going to be a really good hockey player.

I'm fairly high on these 3 as well. Cam Robinson got me on the McTavish train but now I worry he will be this years Barrett Hayton. I'm worried he might not fall to 9 now as many see him as the #2 center in the draft after Beniers.

For that reason I started looking at Kent Johnson a lot more, there is certainly a lot more risk associated with that pick in terms of a boom or bust prospect but I think he would fit well with the high end skill we have already.

Guenther is another one I don't really see falling to us but I would be doing a happy dance if he does.

Honestly I have a list of probably 11 names that I like quite a bit and would be happy if we came away with them. Hoping we stay at 9 and go with whichever name falls to us. I'm highest on Clarke and Eklund but again I don't see them falling to us.

Lamoriello trying his best to make sure Canada doesn't win it. Would have loved to have Dobson back this year, he would be gunning for revenge after that shot went off his stick last year. Setting that aside it looks like it will be a really good one this year, only thing that makes me really nervous is Canada's goaltending. Hoping one of these guys steps up and surprises me though.

I'm not really geeked about it to be honest.

I agree with you guys, based on everything I kept hearing I expected him to dominate this tourney. Hoping to still see something in the next couple days, thinking that maybe its the jet lag... but with that hope its just making more excuses.

Its easy to see a player with a very impressive toolbox, non stop motor, impressive hands. I'm just left questioning his hockey sense a bit, he tries to do way too much on his own and doesn't utilize his team mates enough. Besides a few really great flashes here and there I don't see him as an elite point producer in the NHL.

With all that being said he is still only 18 and I think there is still a ton of room for him to grow. His tenacity and relentless pursuit will be a great addition to the Canucks when he makes the jump to North America. I may not be hyped about his production but he is exactly the type of player you want on your team during the playoffs.

When I was 19 or so I went to the Czech Republic for the 2008 WJHC in Pardubice. I saw like 11 games including the gold medal, semi finals, and bronze medal game... and I think it cost me less than $150 bucks.

Also, beer was like 17 cents.

I went the year before in Sweden, games were split between Leksand and Mora. Games were not very highly attended but the few Swedish fans that came out were lots of fun. They had a cheering section where they jumped around and sang songs, one of the highlights was the Swedish cheering section leader took off his jersey and was wearing a "Fire McGuire" shirt underneath.

Also the Toews shootout to beat the Americans... that was pretty good too

Both have been scratched for the last few games? Still could go either way I think.

I check that out when I was making my lineup, if those teams get hit with injuries and the young guys take a big step up then we might not get them. Otherwise I think the Yotes and Isles will send them to play big minutes on a big stage.

Really hope it happens, the thought of Byram playing with Dobson looks just unreal

  6. Not sure if this is the right spot to post this in, I included a couple Canucks prospects on my list so I think it might count here. If a similar thread is already open please feel free to advise.

The world Juniors are going to be hosted this year in Ostrava and Trinec in the Czech Republic. The event will be taking place between December 26, 2019 to January 5, 2020

Being a huge fan of this event I wanted to open it up for discussion, with this years draft looking to be extremely strong I'm excited to get a chance to see some of these kids on the big stage. To start it off I threw together a mock lineup for Team Canada, just a roster that I think would be fun to see play together.

    Jared McIsaac L

    Ty Smith L

    Noah Dobson R

    Jet Woo R

    Bowen Byram L

    Jared Bernard-Docker R

    Kevin Bahl L Extra D

Alexis Lafreniere / Barrett Hayton / Joe Veleno

Alex Newhook / Kirby Dach / Dylan Cozens

Nolan Foote / Quinton Byfield / Serron Noel

Liam Foudy / Ty Dellandrea / Benoit Olivier-Groulx

    Carson Focht Extra forward

    Olivier Rodrigue

    Zachary Emond

Hoglander combined with Bokk for a goal today. Not sure of the exact details. Sounds like Hoglander scored, but the live score, which can be wrong, showed Bokk unassisted.

Anyone know who to follow for gifs now? With Biech gone I don't know where to find highlights.

Both are 1999 born so ineligible by age for the 2020 tournament.

What is the rule regarding the birthdate? I've heard some people say that players are eligible as long as they are 19 at the start of the Tournament, I've also heard that you have to be 19 throughout the whole thing.

Either way Hoglander will miss out on eligibility in his draft+2 season by a few days. I remember being disappointed by that a couple years ago with Dahlen (they have the same birthday)

Zegras is the one guy I don't want us to draft in that top 10 group of guys.  I hope a team does take him before us.  If we are moving up to 6, it's because Byram (unbelievably) falls to that spot.

They are likely looking to trade up for Zegras, he's the one guy they brought in for a visit that they would have to trade up for. Hoping Detroit is looking to trade down for Podkolzin.

Late to this party. Ranking these at pick 10, if we moved my list would as well. Dach, Cozens and Turcotte would also fall into the want category... I would do terrible things for us to draft Byram

    1. Don’t be like that.  He was predicted to go around 6 last year, EDM didn’t even have a jersey ready for him because they had zero belief he’d still be available.   If you’d like I could waste some time quoting what ISS, THN, SN, McKenzie and others thought of him but I won’t given it’s obvious your personal opinion of him doesn’t line up with what the experts said at the time.

Since the draft THN ranks him 13th best prospect in the world behind only Makar and Hughes.  Dobson and Smith are much, much lower.   Only EP and Hughes have ranked that high for Canucks prospects the last 15 years.  OJ (who they’ve always been high on) best rank was 23, Boeser 22.   They project him to be a number one defenseman like Alex P in St Louis or Carlson in WSH.  Not a second pairing guy.  Two years in a row voted as best defenseman in the OHL, and of last years playoffs where he played 30 minutes a game and scored at a 2 PPG pace, the same production MT had his draft year as a forward .    I’m stoked we picked Hughes given the experts rank him higher, but it’s too early yet to say who will end up the better NHLer.   One will be a rover, the other do a lot of everything well but won’t be found behind the other goalies net often.

Subban and Weber would be their peak but Subban can crush guys too, clear the net and pin guys to he boards where as Hughes will have to rely on skating, stickhandling etc.   He’s like a forward playing the defense, Rafalski type maybe or Vatanen or if we are really lucky Housley (but he has a ton of work to do on his shot to get to that level).

All things being the same and if he was drafted this year instead, we’d be arguing whether to pick Byram or Bouchard if we could Broberg, Seider and Soderstrom wouldn’t even be in the discussion of going in the first round necessarily last year.

My bet is with his elite passing ability he will unleash McDavid and rack up points on their PP in the next couple of years, maybe even this year.

I think the reason Edmonton didn't have a jersey ready is because they are a mess and couldn't pull their heads out of their butts.

My understanding was that Bouchard dropped a bit due to concerns about his lateral skating, he is a good enough skater is straight lines but was able to be beat by skilled shifty players that force him to try to move east and west. I personally would have been extremely upset if we took Bouchard over Hughes last year.

Going into this draft I'm really hoping we come away with Zegras or Boldy, either one of these guys would fit in perfectly in our top 6. With some much uncertainty in the top ten I hadn't put much thought into us getting a Dach or Cozens but it could very well play out that way as well. going to be a really long wait for this event next week!

I pointed to something similar in another thread that people didn't like hearing,  and had a LOT of bs replies to. That was the fact that all these 'elite' skating smaller stature players like Guderau,  Johnson,  Kucherov,  Point,  Arvidson,  ect.... all virtually disappeared in these playoffs.  They were nowhere to be found when the physicality rose to stratospheric levels and time/space to skate/dangle was not there.

Sure,  people came back with Rat-boy being in the finals but I don't think it's debatable that the majority of smaller guys who dominated the reg season didn't show up in the post season strangely enough.   And I don't mean their production dropped off due to the nature of lower scoring playoff hockey - I mean these small guys were shadows of their regular season performances. I mean was it just a coincidence or a 'one-off' post season?

That said I do wonder about a kid like QH - anyone thinking he's more elite than guys like Gudreau,  Kucherov,  Point ect...and that he somehow has something these other superstars lack which will make him immune to the physical intensity of playoff hockey is dreaming imo.

No, I'm not saying he can't be successful,  just asking how he's different than these other stars who made zero impact in the playoffs?  Take the Homer glasses off people and just think about it for a minute.

I'm late replying to this one so sorry if someone already pointed this out. But that Torey Krug guy just had a great playoffs and he is right around the same size as Q. Hughes.

I stand by what I posted earlier. I hope he is drafted top 9 so Canucks have one more better option at 10.

i really don’t see him as any GMs first choice. IMO GMs are making other plans that don’t include Podkolzin. The Team that will eventually pick him will be a team that didn’t think he would be there.

he is no teams Plan A.

I think if a team has a lot of confidence in their ability to develop raw prospects then I think they would take him quite high, hoping that Detroit grabs him for that reason.

I'm never a fan of trading down more than one spot. You don't know what the other teams want in between, as a gm you're assuming. No one knows their rankings. What happens if you trade down 4 and someone in between takes your player? And you had better options at 10 vs 14? Its a bad move. You trade down one because you may know through conversation that the team behind you wants a player you are willing to pass on. Also trading down at 10 doesn't garner you much unless you trade into the 20's etc. Better to just take your guy at 10

In a draft with this much parity you could be sitting a 10 with 4 players left on the board you really like. If you trade down 4 spots you are still guaranteed to get one of your guys and add an additional asset as well.

so If Seider, Soderstrom and Cozens are all there at 10 who's your pick?

I take Cozens, but I'm from northern Canada so i might be biased. Regardless the kid is supposed to be one of the safest picks in the draft, if we drafted him I would be more than happy to move Virtanen in a trade
