  1. For sure, that can't be under-played. I dunno, he was OK in the regular season and then poor in the playoffs. I think that they've got a potentially big hole in net now. Not that it upsets me.
  2. So this means that the Blues are doubling down on Binnington? Yikes, after that playoff performance where he got outplayed by Allen?
  3. Man, that's what you call a signature game. I think when Pettersson's legacy is more established 10 years from now, this game is going to figure prominently.
  4. I think we can sometimes over look the Sedin's legacy as almost too attached to Petey. Markstrom played with the Twins for 2-3 seasons and saw how they carried themselves on and off the ice. They were role models and achieved excellence in the league. Marky seems to have a keen eye to seeing himself as part of the proud Swedish tradition this club has with that country and putting his name next to the likes of Gradin, Naslund, Ohlund, and the Twins.
  5. Nevermind you have an American President who has no qualms about pushing an unsafe vaccine on a population that is already skeptical of science, to boost his own election chances. Oh vey, what a disaster!
  6. They are new cases and it isn't being reported by the league, it's been leaked to Basu.
  7. Say what you want about the performance, but it IS a catchy tune: America is the best, we don't need no covid tests We don't care about your race, just take that mask off your commie face Scientists lie to you, they don't love the red white and blue Scientists, what we gonna do? Let's feed 'em to the bears like the chechens do

  9. I suppose this thread is indicative, sadly, of how politicized the outbreak has become.

  11. I've long made a point of trying to understand how Trump won the 2016 election, a person who was so manifestly unfit, and in over his head for the office of president. His crass narcissism, inability to admit any mistake or misstep, penchant for gross hyperbole, lack of any sort of understanding and even basic preparedness in dealing with most aspects of public policy should have made him a non-viable candidate. Yet he won. So here's what I learned: politics trumps personality. Despite his severe limitations, he also did things which no other politician on the right had been able to do. He won over important sections of the working class AND renounced US foreign interventionism. Trump defends and is the standard bearer of a unique brand of conservatism in the US, a kind of right-wing populism seen in Europe. His supporters are willing to look past his shameful and embarrassing behaviour because of the policies that he champions. But here's the rub: in the world of Covid-19 politicians are being judged by their ability to defend public, regardless of politics. It's why Trudeau, Legault, Ford, Horgan, etc. all have sky high approval ratings, despite their vast idealogical differences. They're seen as looking out for their citizens best interest. On the other hand, politicians who haven't been viewed as responsive are not doing as well in polling, such as Boris Johnson or Shinzo Abe. Trump has been presented a chance to lead, as all leaders have. Yet he continues his shameful behaviour. And it is shameful. Why on Earth do his supporters think it is a good idea to regularly publicly over-ride and contradict the country's top health experts? Is there a single, other country in the world where this is happening? Why on Earth would it be a good idea to hold daily two hour press conferences where he boasts about how wonderful and super and fantastic everything he does is, and run campaign advertisements? Why on Earth is he encouraging people congregating in large public gatherings, deliberately not social distancing or wearing masks. IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC. So yes, the United States is proving its exceptionalism after all in this crisis. It is proving that politics trumps personality.
  12. I'm guessing you've heard the word on the street is May 15th. I'm not sure about older students, but for the younger grades, classes will be split in two and students will attend on alternate days.
  13. Seems to me China and Russia would be encouraging the opposite. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they are trying to encourage Trump supporters to head out and gather publicly. This will hurt the country far more in the long run than practicing safe public health policies.
  14. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/world-news/new-coronavirus-outbreak-northern-china-21912009 Not good.
  15. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-pushes-back-against-cdc-directors-warning-about-coronavirus-second-wave Trump adamantly argued that the coronavirus would not come back in the fall with the same virulence that has this spring – saying that at most it would be “the embers” of the virus the country will have to deal with when the next flu season begins. Translation: Get your shovel and start digging your underground shelters now.
  16. Shocker, the snake oil is ineffective and dangerous: https://apnews.com/a5077c7227b8eb8b0dc23423c0bbe2b2 A malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large analysis of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers reported. The nationwide study was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it’s the largest look so far of hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic azithromycin for COVID-19, which has killed more than 171,000 people as of Tuesday. The study was posted on an online site for researchers and has has not been reviewed by other scientists. Grants from the National Institutes of Health and the University of Virginia paid for the work. Researchers analyzed medical records of 368 male veterans hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infection at Veterans Health Administration medical centers who died or were discharged by April 11. About 28% who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone. About 22% of those getting the drug plus azithromycin died too, but the difference between that group and usual care was not considered large enough to rule out other factors that could have affected survival. Hydroxychloroquine made no difference in the need for a breathing machine, either. Researchers did not track side effects, but noted a hint that hydroxychloroquine might have damaged other organs. The drug has long been known to have potentially serious side effects, including altering the heartbeat in a way that could lead to sudden death. Earlier this month, scientists in Brazil stopped part of a study testing chloroquine, an older drug similar to hydroxychloroquine, after heart rhythm problems developed in one-quarter of people given the higher of two doses being tested. Many doctors have been leery of the drug. At the University of Wisconsin, Madison, “I think we’re all rather underwhelmed” at what’s been seen among the few patients there who’ve tried it, said Dr. Nasia Safdar, medical director of infection control and prevention. Patients asked about it soon after Trump started promoting its use, “but now I think that people have realized we don’t know if it works or not” and needs more study, said Safdar, who had no role in the VA analysis. The NIH and others have more rigorous tests underway.

Currently, "there is no evidence from randomized control trials that it works and clinicians have also been cautioned to look out for side effects of the drug to ensure that first we do no harm," Ryan said. "We eagerly await the outcome of the trials that are underway." https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.04.07.20056424v1 https://www.scmp.com/news/china/science/article/3080055/anti-malarial-treatment-hailed-trump-has-no-benefit-coronavirus https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/08/health/drug-hydroxychloroquine-french-study/index.html To summarize, unfortunately for Fox&Friends, the anecdotal evidence that they've been pushing doesn't make for good public health policy. The science that is emerging is painting an increasingly clear picture of a drug, that is completely ineffective as a prophylactic, largely ineffective as a therapeutic and has toxic side effects.
  19. Interesting that our federal system is working much more smoothly than our neighbours to the south. There is none of the partisan sniping that we see there with our own provincial and federal leaders. We are all in this together.
  20. This is a bit of a cop out. Yes the Chinese initially covered up the virus, but by the third week of January they had locked down an entire province of 60 million. After the virus had moved to Iran, the WHO began ringing the alarm bell, quite loud and clear. Look, I think Republicans have a right to feel aggrieved by the Left. Trump was not the only leader to be behind the curve on this thing. Virtually every country in the world, with the exception of a few East Asian states have been. However, Trump's penchant for gross hyperbole, his tendency to double-down on previous statements, do complete 180 on policy positions and then back again, and above all, his crass obsession with re-election, make him an easy target for everyone of all political stripes, outside of the US. By just about any metric, the United States is faring the worst of any country in this crisis. The leadership that the Trump administration has been a haphazard catastrophe. This is a significant part of the reason the country finds itself the mess it is currently in.
  21. His stat line was mediocre, but I was pretty impressed with his play. He made some unbelievable passes, that, for whatever reasons, his teammates couldn't bury. He looked like he had the skill and size to be a solid NHLer.
  22. Don't look now, but this kid is establishing himself as a legit #3 centre. 23 years old and looks like he'll get over .5ppg in his second season. Got to love his hustle and enthusiasm. Winning teams have to have effective secondary players like this. Not too shabby for a 5th rounder.
