  1. Flames by far the better team this game so I'll take the point although not optimal in the standings.

Miller can't give the puck away like that in OT. I would forgive that play from a younger player, but if you are a veteran in your prime that's just unforgivable. Not saying Miller isn't great, and he had a strong game overall, but IMO he just doesn't have what it takes mentally to be the leader on a team and considering his age I wish we trade him for a big return.

Really bad comparisons IMO, none of those players really compare. I think he's more of a O'Reilly or Bergeron light. Great overall player but too many mistakes to be relied upon, better offense vs those players but not the same level of overall impact. And I wouldn't bet on him being at this level in 3-4 years, let someone else make that bet after giving us a wild trade return.

  3. Not arguing JT is a great player offensively, would be hard to after last night, but he does make 2-3 gaffs every game that would be really costly in the playoffs. Not getting the puck out on the PK due to bad judgement finesse plays, turning the puck over in the O zone etc. He's a great player but at 8-9 mil I'd take a good trade return moving forward and balance our team.

  4. Not going into OJ and whether this was a good trade or not for now, but is Lammiko our new 4th line center on a cheap contract?

He's a bit underwhelming lots of the time but he can shoot, he plays physical (without being a punishing hitter), he rarely makes a mistake, he seems to handle the top centers in the league and his FO% has increased dramatically over the season. Seems like he's quietly doing everything we want from a 4th line center and getting better all the time?

I think you may be onto something. I have seen Hogz imitate some skating techniques that Garland uses to gain space. I also think he is like many others on the team, thinking too much. He was working hard this game and generated some chances just has to keep at it.

I think the sophomore slump is a big part of it. Looked much better last season. Looked great in the preseason though so I'm ok with him being a 3rd liner for now and unless he really bombs next season I'm expecting at least a middle six winger with great intangibles on a good contract.

Seems you care more about her gender than her background, which is justifiably the concern of a few posters here.

I’m gonna give her the benefit of the doubt for now, but if our contract signings start stinking, she should be exposed to the same amount of scrutiny as other other AGM.

Quite the opposite of what I meant. It's good that she brings diversity, apart from that all I care about is a qualified person which enables us to win, and she seems to fit that bill.

You still need guys that can score goals and for all the things Hughes does well that is not one of them.

You also need a 1C and EP is our only current candidate for that within our contending window.

Demko, QH and EP is the core for me. Sure they still have things to learn and figure out until they can compete with Bergeron, Hedman etc in the playoffs but that will come. I think writing off EP will look really bad in 2-3 years.

Here's the problem for me in this statement, which is what I see a lot of people doing:

"to push them past this phase"

This is spoken as if it's a done deal.  Guaranteed, but it's not...it's an unknown and could go either way.

Big moves are only that, they're not moves that will instantly get'er done.  If it was that easy, the team with all the first picks would likely just sweep through and we all know how that story unfolds.

The best chip play is the one that turns out the best, and that's now always known beforehand.

You play the percentages regarding what's best for the roster and cap in upcoming years, and in my book that means trade Miller this year.

As you point out, it's not science, nobody knows in advance, but that goes for the opposite argument as well, i.e. it's not as certain as some think JT would leave a hole in the lineup if the return is good.

  9. I think the reasoning that we can't trade JT without giving up on the season is a bit simplified. If EP gets going and JT gets us a good matchup 3C (along with a good D and a 1st round pick) you could argue that increases the balance on the team to a degree where we actually might gain from it even short term. Also, you can't really say that a team gets so much better or worse if you take away this one player and add that one player instead, it's not as simple as that.

For sure JT would be missed, but I could live with it short term as well as long term. Having EP/Horvat/Miller as our top centers is a luxury we could afford if we were contenders now, but as it stands we need to trade one of them to balance our team, to get cap space and to fill in missing pieces for the future.

  10.  No question Motte is worth more to us then his trade return would be. But that's how free agency works, and also it's very short sighted to conclude we should keep him for that reason alone.

We need the cap space and to get younger and to stop losing assets for nothing, and we also need 4th liners making closer to league minimum vs the 2 mil+ Motte will likely get. Just look at Lammiko and Highmore the last few games.

Motte also has an injury history and a style of play that makes health a concern. He's fine at his current salary, but a substantial raise should not be on the table imo.

Its also possible that PA is the best person available. At least he's taking his time and interviewing a lot of people.

Also as discussed previously in this thread it's a puzzle finding the right mix of people, so some of it might be related to who the other AGMs will be  (who's available and interested and so on), it's not just about being the best candidate for GM (which in itself has no clear cut definition and depends on a number of factors).

  12. Definitely concerning though that out of the supposed core only Horvat has been consistent on this road trip. Demko hasn't really found his groove again after the break, Miller's been good at times but also awful at times, Hughes has not been good the last 2 games with lots of mistakes and bad passing, EP and BB still not playing well.

These have been tough games, so nobody's expecting them to dominate, but I guess it underlines that this roster is not well balanced at all and that our core players aren't quite there yet.

  13. Both his skating and his stick handling looks very off. Not sure if the wrist is ok, but one thing I think gets overlooked is that maybe he just couldn't train as planned during the summer due to the wrist injury? Also missing camp looks really bad on everyone involved, don't know how many examples there's been of younger players missing camp and then having a really bad season. Can't think of one opposite example at the top of my head.

  14. I really hope someone wants Hamonic for a late pick at the deadline. Not counting on it, but hoping.

If we have a good chance of making the playoffs later on, things get interesting as most trades will obviously weaken the team if we get prospects and picks back.

If we're not making the playoffs I see at least 3 of Boeser, Pearson, Motte, Dickinson, Myers and Halak being traded. All good players and worth their current contracts, but it's impossible to gain cap without giving up something and in my eyes none of these players are essential to a contending team down the line, especially when you consider the respective cap hit.

this could work out in Vancouver's favour, if we wanted to target him. He clearly needs to come down to earth a bit on his ask, if other teams only offer something in the 6's he might then choose based on where he wants to play vs. just salary.

We'd have to likely move Myers to accommodate him tho, so that would be a pretty big decision.

Myers is more physicall - not consistently, but when he is - vs Klingberg, but no doubt in my mind that Klingberg is a far superior player in almost all other aspects. I watched DAL vs PIT and no way DAL turns around and wins that game without Klingberg (who was actually much better than Heiskanen in this particular game). Not sure if he's worth 7 mil+ long term but I would definitely want him on our team right now.

That said - with where we're at and with what JR seems intent to do, Klingberg probably is not in the picture short term or long term.

I too am a little, how do you put it, uneasy? with it being too penguin heavy.

However, it's just rumors and it's such an easy link to make with JR working for the pens before. JR was talking about 40 people on the list so it's not surprising a few of them are from the penguins organization.

We will see how things shake up. At the end of the day, hire the best people you can find for each positition.

Exactly - I have no issue with JR considering 5+ People from the pens out of 40 (more if AGM is included?). Then again, there's a difference between being on a list and getting an interview, but regardless, it's just rumours and we don't know why they have surfaced. As long as it's max 1/3 of the hires that's from the pens I'm ok with it.

She is qualified in many ways. The same as a whole bunch of other people are. Anyone saying she is MORE qualified than anyone is not basing that on her actual credentials though.

It's not black and white. If another candidate is obviously better, than that person should get the job regardless of gender etc. In reality though there are pros and cons for all candidates and diversity and gender are pros in her case (as is just bringing a new perspective) so as long as she measures up overall I think she's a viable candidate.
