  1. Still seeing those tracers of your hand, eh? Yeah, that never gets old!
  2. How dare you bring proper perspective to “the sky is falling under Benning!”crowd?
  3. Gotta love the “Canuck fans” that would rather be right than something good happening with the team!
  4. “Oops, he was only supposed to be on during the AM to cover English Premier League…. Quick somebody yank him before the public notices!”
  5. Too much hate in the world. COVID has only made it worse. People really need to try and find compassion within themselves for people that think differently than themselves. Mass vaccination in only the G7 isn’t going to suddenly cause this virus to disappear. We are a multicultural society and people have relatives all over the world. We visit family and loved ones in almost every are in the world. If COVID is running wildly unabated in 90% of the world that has no access to little if any of the vaccines, and COVID has that many repetitive opportunities to mutate (it took a year for Delta to emerge), what do you think is gonna happen? A new variant (perhaps even a sort of Delta & Mu hybrid) is going to emerge and then what? Back to square one…. Searching for a vaccine that can stop Mu before Mu mutates into a variant that is resistant to the new vaccine. Stop hating your fellow human beings and start demanding that our rich G7 start providing the world with vaccines to even have the option to offer it to 50% of their populations - let alone the 80% needed for herd immunity (or is it 90% now - the goalposts keep shifting). For the record, I’m double-vaccinated and went for it soon as it was my turn. If we don’t start donating to the rest of the world I will go for the third shot when my turn is up (due to my decreased lung capacity as a result of spinal injury).
  6. 30 pages… Surely someone has brought up the notion that should Bergevin not match that he might be willing to offer sheet Pettersson, yes?
  7. Highmore will be the cost effective replacement when Motte prices himself out of Vancouver with his consistently high quality play. It’s actually really prudent planning by management. Yeah, and we certainly cannot make that type of decision with our window just opening unless Podkolzin comes in and lights it up the entire year. If that were to happen, and that’s a big if afaic, then perhaps management could pursue a trade if the returns looked near horizon ready which could extend our Cup window from 3-5 years to 5-8 years.
  8. It’s almost as if management knew that when this new drafted core was ready for “go-time” that they would reallocate the dollars to the commensurate salary cap structure that resembles such a decision. Go figure!
  9. Love the term and the dollars are more than fine for the heavy lifting he’ll be responsible for. However, I’m giving it half a season before the “Sutter has zero assists!” morphs into “Dickinson can’t score a goal!” C’est la vie en CanucksLand…
  10. All I can think of is Botchford overemphasizing “bois”. ”Brise-boooiiiiiissss!” RIP.
  11. I thought Tanev was offered a contract but it was far short on term (2years vs 4years)? Regardless, that could be construed as a slap in the face in many respects.
  12. The Tanev departure was a huge mistake. There’s no question at this point even if he’s known to miss a quarter of the season every year. Virtanen over Toffoli was also a huge mistake and the $1.45m saved by retaining Tanev at $4.5m over adding Schmidt at $5.95m plus Virtanen’s $2.55m should’ve gone to Toffoli for a 4-year/$4m AAV deal that he would’ve taken based on team chemistry alone. Markstrom though? Nah, the right call was made there. We committed to Demko after the Vegas otherworldly performance but we chose the wrong insurance policy in Holtby (possibly in part because of Beagle abd the Schmidt acquisition that Benning had in his back pocket).
  13. I empathize with those who see these comments and go, “Great… another entitled teenager demanding immediate success without putting in any time.” i also understand those that say, “Great… we’re already seeing the next captain material essential core players voicing concerns about throwing away years of their prime on top of the current captain and top-six powerforward voicing concerns about throwing away years of their prime.” I have a lot of time for this and anyone completely denying that there’s anything to all this smoke is either completely oblivious or purposely burying their head in the sand to avoid the implications of having to go into another rebuild just as we’re supposed to be exiting a rebuild and entering a Cup contending window. However, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, this summer’s moves to add OEL, Garland & Dickinson was well received by all in the locker room - especially Pettersson who has likely long looked up to OEL. None of those competitive professional athletes had the patience to burn another year of their prime while some fans demanded management and ownership wait out the “bad contracts” until next summer. There’s a happy medium to be had here. The sky isn’t falling here any sooner than it will in Edmonton where there is a player with a more justified position to have his patience running out with regards to surrounding him with the proper talent to win in the playoffs. Up next on that list is Toronto. Pettersson has been here, what, three years?! Relax, people. These are negotiation tactics that are capitalizing on the actual atmosphere that Horvat’s & Miller’s camps started in order to speed up this process of Cup contention. If Pettersson and Quinn Hughes (they’re both represented by the same agents) are truly interested in playing for a winner then they will not follow the model of Marner, Matthews & Nylander by scraping dry every spare dime that they can. That model has proven to be a complete flop so far.
  14. My bad. I didn’t realize both bridge deals were set to expire in UFA age. Replace those two with Heiskanen and Makar then. The RFA - UFA legally non comparable point remains. Thank you for correcting my mistaken understanding of where Nurse & Jones were at.
  15. RFAs cannot use UFA salaries in salary arbitration because UFA salaries are acknowledged industry-wide to be inflated by demand alone which is why the CBA prohibits UFA comparable salaries in arbitration hearings; therefore, Myers’ salary has no direct bearing on Hughes’ contract negotiations at all. Werenski, Nurse, Jones, etc? Now those RFA salaries have a direct impact on JP Barry’s & Pat Brisson’s negotiation leverage.
  16. It’s certainly something I think ought to be considered and the answer may ultimately lay within how well Podkolzin’s offensive game translates to this level. Getting a high end prospect and another first round pick would go a long way towards keeping the pipeline of replacement players open thereby extending our window of opportunity for this core. The problem is, what do you do if Podkolzin has a disappointing year that sees him score only 5g 15-20a? Now you’re potentially slamming your window closed if you still choose to trade JT, and Podkolzin keeps putting up 4th liner offensive numbers in top-nine minutes, because by the time those blue chip assets are ready to contribute Horvat will be 31/32 and trending towards a third line centre’s role. So, if Podkolzin shines offensively, yes, that opens up the option of trading JT; however, if he struggles then JB just can’t risk it, IMO. Edit: Btw, my handle is just a play on my last name, and drafting. I do also enjoy beer from the tap but MGD is only an occasional consumption, not my go-to and my handle certainly has nothing to do with JT as I’ve been a board member since Burkie was rumoured to be landing Ron Francis & Jeff O’Neill at the trade deadline (apparently O’Neill vetoed the trade) in the early 2000s
  17. If anyone could turn Terry Cahill and Dean Murdoch into 20g NHL “top-six forwards” it’s McDavid. The only problem is when those two gotta skate backwards…
  18. This is very true. Losing Adam Larssen was a painful reality check for them. They surely could not afford to lose Nurse and even more so with all the uncertainty surrounding Klefbom. I still question why they couldn’t find a more palatable middle ground five year deal to coincide with McDavid’s deal.
  19. They did win a couple more Cups but I can’t remember at what point in their 8-year contract extensions they were at with regards to cap % hit. They had a steady pipeline of guys to take over for the departing cap casualties like Bolland (Shaw), Byfuglien/Ladd, (Saad/Bickell), etc, etc. Edmonton has a potential gem in third line centre MacLeod (man can he skate) making peanuts but I’m not sure where else in their lineup they’re gonna find “equalizer” cheap contracts to offset these gargantuan deals. If the cap doesn’t start rising in large amounts Holland is gonna find himself squeezed. Hyman & Nurse eating $15m of cap space = yikes. However, I’m expecting McDavid & Draisaitl to artificially hold up Hyman’s numbers to make that $5.5m cap hit look okay as long as he doesn’t suffer a major knee injury like Roussel did or a Hyman with cement in his skates will be a reoccurrence of the Lucic contract…
  20. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. I’ve long since moved down to the coast but it’s hard to watch the place of my youth threatened to such a degree.
  21. There were articles quoting McDavid saying he took less than what he could’ve gotten but yes, Draisaitl was slightly different (they were comparing what Draisaitl got with what Pastrnak signed for iirc). Most did say Leon’s was a risk but other reports suggested he left a lot of money by signing on for 8yrs and that has proven to be the case. Regardless, there WAS a huge wad of cash left on the table that just got devoured by Nurse. The point remains: instead of spreading out the wealth Edmonton has gone full-Dubas.
  22. Remember when McDavid & Draisaitl (even more so) left money on the table to help management surround them with talent? Yeah, Nurse just wolfed down the entire buffet spread. Way to take less for the benefit of the team there Darnell! I wonder how this is sitting with Draisaitl? How could Holland not be able to sell an $8.5m cap hit based on that internal structure? Cut a few years off the term to allow Darnell to recoup some of the lost salary as an UFA at that point and have his deal expire with McDavid’s…
