[Signing] Tampa re-sign Hagel 52M$/8years
D-Money replied to timberz21's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Most long term contracts going forward are going to seem high, because the cap is about to rise steeply. A couple of years ago this deal would have an AAV that starts with a 5. Scored 30 goals this year, and was almost a PPG in the playoffs. He was in place for 30 goals in 2021-22 as well before the trade to Tampa - took him a while to settle in, but was back at his usual this season. A defensively strong player who scores that much is very valuable. By comparison, Blake Coleman never scored more than 22 goals, and he got $4.9M long term in free agency, and that’s in the middle of COVID, with no cap raises on the horizon. -
One of my favourite first lines of a song: “When I came up from out of the meat locker…the city was gone.”

Well, Demko already showed us he was back in form at the end of last year. For Markstrom, this may be the beginning of the end. So that’s a pretty easy bet. That said, Flames have Dustin Wolf, who is an even better goaltending prospect than Silovs. So they might have a way of remaining competitive even if vintage Markstrom is long gone.

He had a fantastic sophomore season at Cornell, but had some injury trouble last year. Even still, Colorado didn’t exactly “give up” on him. Just last week GM MacFarland told the media they were in negotiations and hoped to get him signed. Seems like an example of a college player electing to not sign and go to free agency instead. Prediction: Matt signs with Seattle. His dad is a scout for the Kraken, and there is a clear path to a bottom-6 C position in 1-2 years. But if that isn’t the plan, I’d expect Vancouver to be on the radar too. He does check boxes for what the Canucks need, and won’t have much internal competition outside of Raty and Sasson.

[Report] David Krejci announces retirement
D-Money replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
They’re already missing their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 2024, and their 2nd and 4th in 2025. Their prospect pool is one of the weakest in the league, and the only legitimate top-6/top-4 player under 27 is McAvoy. They aren’t going to be a threat in the short term. But they have enough talent to keep in the mushy middle for years. Barring an insane run at the draft (like the Stars in 2017) I think it will be at least a decade before the Bruins have any real shot at contending again…and that makes me happy. -
This is just one of numerous potential problems. The only animal I want on my flight is the one in my sandwich.

Daniel Sprong accused of assaulting IndyCar racer Zach DeMelo
D-Money replied to Odd.'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
The reason seemed to be that his numbers likely would have given him a huge arbitration award, that Seattle would have no choice to match. It seemed reasonable to not qualify and try to sign him as a UFA, but he got a better offer. That said, there’s always the possibility that there was more to it than just that. -

Well, there goes most - if not all - of that $2M contract he just signed. Don’t know much about racers, so not sure if DeMelo just sues and settles for a bunch of money, or if he’s well off enough to focus on getting him charged with felony assault. If the latter, I suspect Detroit will cancel his contract. -
My wife took my 10 YO daughter to Barbie. Wife said it was absolutely hilarious, but daughter did not like it at all.

Although I don’t agree with the OP in general, I would like this exact rule for the playoffs. Although the cap doesn’t apply the same in the post season, it’s ridiculous that teams can suddenly ice a roster with combined cap that exceeds the salary cap. A rule like that should pump the brakes a little on the hoarding of talent that is suddenly all healthy enough to play when the playoffs start.

[3-Way Trade] Penguins acquire Erik Karlsson, Rem Pitlick, Dillon Hamaliuk, 2026 3rd-round pick; Sharks acquire Mikael Granlund, Jan Rutta, Mike Hoffman, 2024 1st-round pick; Canadiens acquire Jeff Petry, Casey DeSmith, Nathan Legare, 2025 2nd-round pick

Yes. I’m assuming he’ll be good for 2 of them, and an anchor for the last 2. -

All along Sharks have said the price will be dictated on how much they have to retain. Getting out from the last couple years of that contract with only $1.5M retained is the biggest asset for San Jose. There just weren’t many teams out there willing to consider paying to take that on. -
[Signing] Sabres sign Zach Benson
D-Money replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Is Benson a great prospect? Absolutely. Is he more likely to hit his ceiling than Willander? Quite possibly, yeah. The point is though, if both players do not their ceilings, which is more valuable? It's the defenseman, and it's not particularly close. Even if Willander falls short of expectation and Benson doesn’t, they could still have similar trade value (see: Hall for Larsson trade). -
I’d rate it the same. As far as action movies go, excellent. It’s funny, generally sequels tend to be diminishing returns. But IMO, each Mission Impossible movie is better than the previous one.

[Signing] Kraken re-sign Vince Dunn

Another similar one is Brent Seabrook at $6.875M. But for him, the pain was somewhat lessened by him going into LTIRetirement so early. -

Vlasic has been making $7M for years… -

That was my thought as well. But the response from Rutherford (that it helps the Canucks, and that they won’t replace him) seems to indicate that internally they decided they may have too many cooks in the kitchen? Maybe Rutherford approached Clancy about this, and Clancy has long ties with Treliving, so they allowed this to happen on a one-time basis.

[PROPOSAL] Conor Garland to Calgary (Revised)
D-Money replied to Elias Pettersson's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
He has a 10-team trade list, so odds are not great that Vancouver is on it. If they are though, Backlund would be an ideal fit for us, even if just for 1 year.
