If we were healthy and rolling, the odds would still be incredibly low to make the playoffs. However, given the circumstances, it's going to be almost certainly impossible. Reports are that the Canucks have had to deal with the worst symptoms of any of the teams, and they reached the most players on the roster. The closest team that had to deal with what the Canucks have was the Sabres. Before the outbreak, they were playing .500 hockey, going 4-4-2 in their previous 10. After they got back on the ice, they went 2-20-2. (And those 24 games weren't as condensed as what they league has been proposing for how the Canucks might finish the season.) Now that Buffalo is finally getting back to speed, they're not so bad anymore: 5-2-3 in their last 10. When the Canucks finally get back on the ice, the results won't be pretty. The saving grace will be getting to see some young guys get chances (they will likely have better legs and lungs than the regulars). But expecting the team to go on a win streak here is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

[GDT/PGT] Vancouver Canucks vs Toronto Maple Leaves | April 18 | SNP

That's what I was thinking. But they can't really suggest that until Canucks are mathematically eliminated. -
[Proposal] Rumours about Schmidt and Miller
D-Money replied to Provost's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd much rather see how next season is going before trading any top players like Miller and Schmidt. But if it goes sideways again, and we look more like 3+ seasons from truly contending, then all bets are off. Imagine what a retained Miller would get at next trade deadline? That could expedite things for the new GM (because if the team doesn't show improvement next year, Benning is most definitely gone). -
Over 2 million AZ vaccines distributed in Canada, and only one with the blood clot side effect so far. Talk about a virtual non-issue.

Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.

Ok, then who answers for the product on the ice? Because it’s generally been very poor. -

How did those experiments work out? And what does that say about the man who proposed the experiments? -
Great deadline everyone! Much like Tampa IRL, I'm going to be in tough to even get out of my division, let alone to the Finals again. And I'm very heavily invested in Tampa, so hopefully we'll both get through. This looks to be the playoff roster for the Hurricanes: Alex Ovechkin - Nazem Kadri - Reilly Smith Andre Burakovsky - Paul Stastny - Charlie Coyle Radim Zohorna - Ross Colton - Riley Nash Mark Jankowski - Josh Archibald Victor Hedman - Mikhail Sergachev Jeremy Lauzon - Alec Martinez Ben Chiarot - Justin Holl Jon Merrill Dan Renouf Andre Vasilevskiy Jake Allen Just a couple forwards short of a full roster. Might get lucky with a call-up (possible with Chaffee or Mayhew for the Wild).

Thanks to @Dak Prescott (and maybe @Tony Romo, who knows?) for the negotiations. I expected Staal to be moved to a playoff team at the deadline IRL, but it didn't happen. Detroit moved Merrill instead, and his cap hit was low as well, so I made the swap for extra playoff depth. Also cleared an extra contract spot going forward.

Nice moves. But as your likely 1st round opponent, I hope for this as well.

Sure do wish @Jaku would log in and check his inbox...

Even if Gaudette fizzles out, the fact remains that he was a highly coveted prospect at one point, and that we most certainly could have got significantly more if we move him earlier. Benning is just too slow. Waited too long on Gaudette and Virtanen. "Ran out of time" for Toffoli. Also ran out of time to get anything for Miller, Hamhuis, and Vrbata. Just piss-poor management.

Thanks to @Art Vandelay for the negotiations. I misspoke earlier - I still needed an Oiler to have rep from all 4 Canadian playoff teams. I’m not sure the Oilers have what it takes to win a round, but glad to have my bases covered. Happy with the team now. Unless a certain AWOL GM suddenly responds to an offer I made him, I’m probably done for deadline shopping.

Well, I tried offering a 7th, but for some reason @Gally wasn’t biting.

First things first, we welcome Denis and Simon to the organization. Although the focus is primarily on this year, still wanted to plan ahead to next year a bit. Hoping at least one of these guys will make an NHL roster next season, to help replace one of the numerous pending FA forwards. I’m very excited to add Radim “The Dream” Zohorna, who has looked fantastic in his first few games in the NHL. He’s 6’6”, can skate, and make plays - what’s not to like? And lastly, thanks to @Gally for the negotiations. I figured, if that 15 year-old GM of the Maple Leafs can sidestep the salary cap with a player on I/R, why can’t I? Hoping Nash will be ready to go for the start of the playoffs.

The pieces were there, but it took Gillis identifying and acquiring quality veterans to take it to the next level. Something Nonis seemingly wasn’t generally able to do (see: Chouinard, Isbister, Carney, Ritchie, etc). Benning has drafted very well, but his attempts to identify and acquire veteran talent have been very Nonis-like. That’s why I don’t think he has what it takes to build a true contender.

"This 17 game sample under never-before-seen circumstances shows who the real Canucks are - not the 37 games this year, or the hundreds of games prior to it." Gotchya. What happened the year after that playoff win over Dallas? We missed the playoffs, and then hired a new GM who identified inefficiencies and problems with the team, and made a series of moves to surround the young core players with better talent and leadership. Exactly what I wish would happen this year.

Our record for the last 5 weeks of the 2019-20 season was 6-9-1. We were falling in the standings, and in the last game prior to the COVID shutdown Tanev suffered an injury and would have missed most of the rest of the season. We beat Minnesota, who had goaltending troubles. Then we came up against a Blues team that was still recovering from multiple cases of COVID, and whose starting goalie was majorly off. Then we got absolutely steamrolled on the ice by Vegas, but hung on for dear life all the way to game 7 because of some epic (read: unsustainable) goaltending. It was a nice little run, but considering all of the regular season results for the last few years, it was a definite outlier. Suggesting that this is ridiculous is what is ridiculous. I don't want to be a team that has a surprise run simply due to goaltending. I want both the goalie and the team in front of them to be excellent. I want the Canucks to be steamrolling the other teams on the ice, like Vegas did to us in the bubble, and like Vancouver did to other teams in 2010-11.

[GDT] Around the NHL | April (04-10) 2021

Good news for the Stars and Blackhawks. Might still be a chance for one of them to snag the 4th playoff spot in the Central. -

[Signing] Canucks re-sign Tanner Pearson
D-Money replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I’m largely not in favour of this contract. That said, I think Pearson could have got it in UFA, maybe even more. There was obvious interest from other teams as a rental, so he would likely have many suitors in free agency. This offseason will be different than last. Teams have had a year to prepare for a flat cap world. A lot of teams will have a lot of cap space this free agency, and most of them are starting to have fans in the building already. A number of teams that spent little this season look ready to take the next step (such as LA and New Jersey), and will likely look to free agency to bolster their roster. Plus there is an expansion team coming in, who will be taking salaries off the books of other teams (both of good players, and for side deals for taking bad contracts). This will also result in 23 more roster spots to fill, so it’s a further dilution of talent league-wide. And on top of that, COVID has affected all NHL farm teams, and hence interrupted the development of numerous players that would have been looked to for taking the next step, and may have normally been ready to fill in for the additional roster spots, and retired players. Teams will have less confidence than ever that their AHL players are ready for the next step, and as such will be hitting the UFA market to plug holes. So again, I’m largely not in favour of this deal. I would have much preferred trading Pearson for a pick/prospect, and then attempting to re-sign him in free agency. But at the same time, considering the above, it may not have worked out, and possibly cost us even more.
