  1. i know what you mean about tkachuck, he never felt like the right pick to me. didn't the flames also draft daniel tkachuck? it seems like a safe pick to me; the other d men MAY have more upside, but we need a stable guy. he's probably already one of the most skilled d men we have ever had on our team, and he's only 17.
  2. this is a good move. in years past we bemoaned the canucks playing it safe with late first round picks (Smith, White and Schroeder) but this guy has some serious upside: a captain of a US national team, character, and going to a great program.
  3. really? i don't live in bc, or canada for that matter, so i hadn't heard that. wow, i just assumed that the fans will keep on going and it'll be business as usual. however, if there are empty seats in the arena, then heads will roll.
  4. this really is a divisive question, isn't it? unfortunately, i'm totally split down the middle on mg. 2-3 weeks ago i wanted his head, now, not so much. here's my take and observations - i'll put them in point form as they aren't really connected which is kind of like the problem in general - lots of points, but it's hard to connect the dots to form a clear picture. perhaps by putting thoughts to page, i'll form a clearer opinion myself - i cant imagine that other teams wont trade with him - if that were the case, then those gm's should be fired (and will be) as they are putting personal feelings ahead of what's in the best interest of their respective teams and no owner will stand for that, and gm's who want to cash cheques know this - the media are fuzzing the picture - case in point, i read that in regards to kessler, the pens offered sutter, a 1st and a 3rd from sources in van, but pitt media reported the same deal plus their top d prospect (a blue chipper). which one is correct? the deal reported by pitt's media is much more acceptable than the one the van media was reporting - staying with kessler, bothchford (I know, right?) said something that i thought was bang on - where the F were the offers for kessler? seriously? i'd have thought that teams would have lined up for a chance to get rk at his current deal - but for some reason they didn't. WHY? am i wrong with my first point? - does anyone see a logic and direction to his moves? i'm not sure i do and that greatly concerns me. the moves seem all over the place. getting more skilled is not a valid answer as all teams are constantly doing this - hell, the oilers of the 80's moved players around to tweak and improve the team a little bit more. most would agree that younger and faster is the way to go - are the sedin contracts a make up for taking less a few years ago? - i believe so. as the value of franchise has increased by $500m under his reign, mg should reward two of the biggest reasons (on the ice at least - i'm sure the dollar had a lot to do with the appreciation also) for that increase. - contenders always overpay for assets and builders reap the rewards; that's the cycle. now that we aren't contenders, he shouldn't have to overpay for assets and thus be in a better bargaining position - mg often has the right idea, but chooses the wrong players. we needed to upgrade the d, so he got ballard - a player i actually liked - but clearly it didn't work out. booth, that "second liner" we needed was a no brainer that shockingly failed. at least his recent play might actually make him attractive to a team and thus not have to be bought out - the lou/schneider fiasco can not be justified. lou's leaving was fine by me, and would have been two years ago. i felt that CS was a sure thing that was worth the risk. lack has potential but is still raw. CS + EL would have been a great tandem. mg's biggest mistake was not accepting that shedding RL's contract was the best part of any deal he was going to get -back to the obfuscating media - moj (sp?) said that mg could have traded RL for picks 2 years ago but demanded much more; booth also. is this true, or total bs? if true, then refer to the previous point -jensen might just save mg's job. his play with the sedins (thus stepping right in to the top line) would be a huge plus for the team. mg could prove that his picks are finally coming up and at a price that greatly favors the team - free agent signings have been his best work: santo./rich./stanton/ (just from last year) and of course tanev are going to be big parts of our future. - getting players to take less to stay is not really difficult when you are talking about a city like vancouver. it kind of sells itself doesn't it. if this were edmonton, then kudos to mg upon a re-re-read i see a pattern here - both good and bad, which is what i think makes this such a difficult question to answer. if you focus on one thing you overlook other things that counteract that point. my conclusion: one more year for him
