A 1st a 2nd plus whatever at that price point. We overpaid, not fleeced, but over paid. I would say Klingberg plus our two of Cole and Soucy.

    Klingberg

    Plus keeping our draft picks!

Klingberg is garbage. You are comparing someone that has worst defense than Tyson Barrie with Hronek who was one of the best defensive D man on Detroit last season with offense to boot?? Might as well compare Pietrangelo to Klingberg and call them the same. They aren't and we paid a fair price to get Hronek, a dman that is pretty rare to get in today's NHL.

Yeah I think this is what's going to happen, but put Myers on that bottom pairing RD as the "strong" guy. I think he expects Hughes to carry Cole, Hronek to carry Soucy and pray Hirose/Rathbone/Irwin and Myers don't make too many mistakes.

It's a gamble and the cheap way out of course, but worth a shot. Allvin is all about these low/cheap pick-ups and trying to put them in positions to succeed. He took on a lot of cheap projects previously (Dermott, Studnicka, Bear), all of whom didn't pay out. Soucy and Cole have a bit more quality but still, they're not quite 20+ minute rocks on defence either, they have their weaknesses but I think Allvin is hoping that Hughes and Hronek can cover a lot of those mistakes up. I think Hughes can, we've seen him turn guys like Schenn and Bear into monsters, but I worry Hronek isn't elite enough to carry Soucy who was a 16 minute bottom pairing guy in Seattle last year.

The other big concern is how Tyler Myers comes ready to play next year. If he's a decent 20+ minute guy then wow do we have a rock solid PK and bottom pairing and he can really mentor a kid like Hirose or Rathbone, with Irwin the odd jump in every now and then if we want more toughness on a given night. If he's a gangly mess on the ice and Hirose has to cover his gaps, boy we could get feasted on.

Lots of combinations which could take place. My other big worry is we're one injury away from a bit of a disaster but that's probably why Irwin was signed, a tiny bit of insurance. 2 injuries and we're finished but you could say the same about most non-playoff teams.

This is why we need 2 more guys and Myers gone. Myers is more of a 7th dman nowadays and he really is terrible most nights. Tanev and a big trade for Pesce would be best for both long term and short term. Even after Tanev and Cole are gone after short term deals, we would still have Hronek, Hughes, Peace, Soucy on long term deals and possibility of Willander joining in a couple of years on an ELC contract paired with either Hirose or Rathbone.

I know Allvin has made some great moves to acquire some big, tough defencemen, and he's plugged all the holes this off-season. Right now we're maybe a fringe playoff team. Let's get greedy and see what we can do to put this team over the top. One true top-end top-4 defenceman and this team is a contender again. Here are my options:

    1) Boeser + Rathbone + Lekkerimaki for Carter + Marcus Pettersson (LD)

Pens just signed Graves, cap-for-cap, they get their man in Boeser after losing Zucker, Rathbone for some insurance, POJ is ready for top-4 minutes anyway.

    2) Boeser + Rathbone for Hanifin

He wants out, nothing to lose for Calgary, they obviously want some help scoring. We can give them a mid pick if they want more value and rightly so.

    3) Boeser + 1st + Rathbone for Pesce

Big deal here and big gamble, that's an overpayment for Pesce IMO but what it costs to get one of the best RDs in the world in his prime.

    4) Boeser + Rathbone for Peeke

They have the cap space, they want help scoring and they just loaded up on defence so Peeke is the odd man out.

I love Boeser but sadly think he's our best trading chip. We lose a good 20-30G scorer, but look at this defence. If it's a lefty, here's how we line up:

    Hughes - Cole

    Pettersson/Hanifin - Hronek

    Soucy - Myers

    Hirose

    Irwin

If it's a righty, look at this:

    Hughes - Pesce/Peeke

    Cole - Hronek

    Soucy - Myers

    Hirose

    Irwin

Like I said, we're good now, but one true top guy gives a defence comparable to the last 4 conference finalists. Size, toughness, everyone can defend well and Hughes will really run the show. We know injuries are going to hit which is where Hirose and Irwin can jump in, and our bottom pairing guys can leap up and play 20 minutes, but that is a playoff defence that can shut down any offence in the league.

That statement is only true if we get rid of Myers and get Tanev in a trade for Calgary.

    Hughes-Tanev

    Cole-Pesce

    Soucy-Hronek

    Hirose, Bear, Wolanin, Irwin

    Now that's a bullet proof D

6 top 4 NHL defenders with 4 NHL caliber defenders as depth. Cole, Pesce, Soucy can hit and bring size, Tanev is elite in defense and Hronek and Hughes provide world class offense. Hirose and Bear provide more offense and good two way D. Demko and Silovs provide the goaltending that every team wants.

Upgrade that to Boeser for Hanifin and we're done. Throw them Rathbone for defensive compensation too.

    Hanifin - Hronek

    Hughes - Cole

    Soucy - Myers

    Hirose

    Irwin

    Contending-level defence.

Trade both Boeser and Garland to Calgary for Hanifin and Tanev and then we are done

    Hanifin-Hronek

    Hughes-Tanev

    Soucy-Cole

    Myers, Bear, Hirose, Wolanin, poolman

Now that's contending level D with lots of depth. 6 NHL dman to go with 5 NHL level depth dman. We can trade either Bear or Myers for some wingers.

    Forwards would still be:

    Kuzmenko-Pettersson-Beau

    Pearson-Miller-Mikheyev

    Podkolzin-Dries-PDG

    Joshua-Aman-Blueger

Not a bad forward group to go with that defense and Canucks would give up a lot less goals with better defensive forwards in Mikheyev, Blueger, Beau, Aman etc.

San Jose is getting boned, Vancouver and Carolina are getting way to good a deal

Karlsson has a big contract and can't play D. Also he is getting older so SJ is moving a huge contract and getting low cap hit young players and futures for it. It's better than getting nothing for Karlsson and Karlsson isn't worth a whole lot due to age and cap hit

    To Calgary:

    Conor Garland

    To Vancouver:

    Chris Tanev

That's it.  That's the trade.  Calgary gets a winger with term and we get back our Tanev to play with Hughes.

    Hughes     Tanev

    Cole          Hronek

    Soucy       Myers

That's actually a pretty solid D group even with Myers on the 3rd pairing. Would make us a playoff team for sure

  7. I think Canucks should trade either Boeser or Garland, gain cap space and sign Yamamoto and Zadina to cheap 1 year deals at 1 mil per year. This would give time for prospects like Hoglander, Podkolzin and Likker to develop in AHL.

    Kuzmenko-Pettersson-Beauvillier

    Garland-Miller-Mikheyev

    Zadina-Blueger-Yamamoto

    Joshua-Aman-Nielsen

Zadina and Yams could be great as 3rd line scorers, while Boeser gets traded to make cap space

So with his bro being potentially number 1, Vancouver is now the Number 1 OA factory?  Feel like we should get in on that sometime.

Both Bedard and Macklin will come to Vancouver once their contract is up

I almost forgot about Kudryavtsev who looked great at camp last year too

    Willander- RD

    DPetey- LD

    Bruztewicz- RD

All looking like potential middle pairing or better defensemen

    Hirose- LD

    Rathbone- LD

    Johansson- RD

    Kudryavtsev- LD

    All potential bottom pair defensemen

Defense prospect pool suddenly looks well stocked

No love for my boy Mynio??

Not really.  Benning found a few fringee NHLers like Rathbone, Gaudette, but most never amounted to much of anything, despite gaining some momemtum.  Forsling is the outlier.  Hoping Silovs will be another.

Benning was actually good at drafting with Judd when he was here. We got Pettersson, Hughes, McCann, Boeser, Hoglander, Podkolzin, Forsling, Demko etc. I don't know the performance of new management in drafting but we will see in a few years

  11. I am generally happy with 1st and 2nd round and 3rd round was ok too with Mynio and 6'6 Victor. Those top 3 rounds generally produce NHLers so I guess it's not too bad if 4th round was questionable. As long as our 1st 3 rounds was good, we should be fine.

Well we're done til #171 now. Such a good start but absolutely whiffed on the last 4 picks. Went from very happy and excited to still happy and excited for Willander and Hunter but I have no faith in any of these other picks making it.

Yeah not sure about our draft performance. This was the area usually where Benning shines while laying turds in other areas lol. So maybe we got weaker at drafting now
