  1. Reading an article on this and it sounds like Bertuzzi-Moore 2.0. Russian guy's teammate got stretchered off in a previous preseason game between the two teams after being hit from behind into the boards, so it seems like he was out looking for revenge. http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/news/watch-khl-player-goes-on-stunning-one-man-rampage-tries-to-fight-entire-team/ https://youtu.be/IHCOaz05pxY
  2. What's the point of the video other than to tell us what we already know. People are $&!#ty, people were $&!#ty since the dawn of time and will continue to be until the end. As an adult you should have the faculties to deal with words. Should people say these hateful things? No, I don't think anyone would agree that people should say this stuff. But, it's still inevitable. You can't control what every individual person does at any given time no matter how much you campaign against it; people still smoke, they still drink and drive, there are still racists, sexists and homophobes - that will never change. The only thing you can do is control your response to it and frankly, all this video will do is reinforce the trolling. This is what those people thrive on, they want to get under your skin and make you angry. But no, you're right let's continue to feed the trolls and show them how much they matter by blubbering on the internet about how they hurt us. Tyler, the Creator had it absolutely right, "just walk away".
  3. Ahh grow up. There are a multitude of outs available to anyone who wants them. The block function takes literally two seconds to hit, if that doesn't satisfy your bloodlust report them. If it is "too much to handle" make your accounts private. For christ's sake I thought we were supposed to grow out of tattletaling by the age of five. We got grown adults going to media outlets with the equivalent of "Mommy, mommy, Jimmy called me a doodoohead!". Really though, why does anyone lend any weight to what some anonymous asshole you've never met and will never meet thinks of you or threatens to do to you. Are people really this weak nowadays? Social media has rotted people's brain to the point where they need "likes" or "favourites" to feel good about themselves and that's why people give a $&!# about what the knob in Kalamazoo thinks of them.
  4. If he could prove he was on the plane could he take her to court for slander?
  5. I don't think we should have to tell you that an earnings gap is not the same as a wage gap. Men tend to earn more because they work more hours, are more likely to take overtime, etc. due to women tending to be required to do more in the home, ie. looking after the kids. Again, a wage gap differs from an earning gap. The numbers you are quoting comes from the average EARNINGS of the sexes. In the States this represents women earning 77% what men earn. There are many reasons for why this occurs, a lot of it has to do with CHOICES. The myth that women are getting paid less for the same work is ludicrous. Women earn less because they CHOOSE lower paying careers, men go into STEM, women go into the social sciences; although, if the demographics of my classes are any indicator, this is changing and the gap will likely continue to decrease. Plus efforts to get young women into the sciences have been taken through "girl-only science days" sponsored by local schools and libraries in the summer. Again, men to work longer hours and overtime and are traditionally expected to do less in the homestead (as these traditions continue to crumble so likely would the wage gap). Another is seen in women's general unwillingness to negotiate hard, men tend to negotiate better wages for themselves than do women. A real issue for women in the workplace likely comes from the "glass ceiling" and their perceived competence in the workplace, but again, as attitudes change this should disappear. Getting back to the topic at hand this charity is not "very worrying" as there is a women-only counterpart to this organization, 100womenwhogiveadamn.ca, which as the lack of an article written indicates, receives no grief for their efforts of charity. It's more "worrying" that this professor seems to think that this organization is insidiously forcing their values upon the community. To quote her "It sends an important message about the vision they have of the future of this community." Excuse me, but what the &^@# is that supposed to mean, does she think they dream of a male-only paradise of sorts? And conversely, does the women-only counterpart not have the same issue than in her eyes?
  6. What irks me the most is that we haven't heard from anyone else in that room that day. There has to be at least 20 witnesses there that could give a view into what happened, but instead we're left with a he said, they said situation where both parties have everything to gain by lying through their teeth. It's been a week, they can't find anybody?
  7. This whole Richards' situation stinks to high heaven. If they bought him out I calculate the cap hit at: 1.217M this year 1.717M year 2 2.717M year 3 4.217M year 4 & 5 1.466M years 6-10 Yahoo is reporting that the Kings would be on the hook for Richards' cap recapture at 1.32M for the next five years. So termination would hurt them by about 100K this year and significantly help them the other 9 years. Hopefully Richards and the PA take the Kings to task.
  8. Meh, the whole pretending to be black thing isn't the most important part of the story. She has also claimed to have received hate mail and harassment with little to no evidence. Hate mail with no postage stamps and no stamps saying they were processed by the post office were none the less placed in her locked mailbox. I would be more concerned that she is a pathological liar if I were the NAACP as she has also claimed to have grown up in a teepee and use a bow and arrow to hunt food (both lies according to her parents). She also claims to have been abused by her parents and that her father was her step-father; posting a picture of herself with one of her adopted brothers and a black man, claiming him to be her dad. And I sure as hell wouldn't someone who has such a history of deception to be my professor at my university. She has fabricated a shroud of victimhood around herself through lies. The "advancement" she has created seems to be only that of her career through a series of falsities designed to "legitimize" herself as an African-American woman and her connection to the community via her "struggles" as an African-American woman faced with racism.
  9. CCTV footage shows he pointed what was likely the handgun at the officer. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/video/2014/dec/24/cctv-footage-antonio-martin-gun-police-missouri-video And thus we see the issue with turning to social media for the "facts". Just like in the case of Michael Brown, Antonio Martin has sick leeches clinging to his death in an effort to secure their 15 minutes of fame (looking at you "Jesus Cristo").
  10. There is a simple reasoning for skin lightening treatments and it has absolutely zero to do with racism. They do not want to appear "more white". In certain cultures (in example the Chinese and Indian cultures) the darkness or fairness of one's skin is indicative of their social class. Tans in Chinese culture represent the working class those that tend to work in sunny fields all day (thus, as one poster pointed out, you see persons of Asian descent with umbrellas and face shields for the sun). The fairer one's skin in Indian culture the higher their caste. In these cultures fairer skin is more beautiful much as darker or tanned skin can be seen as more beautiful in recent Western culture. Simply, it is purely cosmetic, but more akin to buying a BMW that you can't afford instead of the Honda you can. sources: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/nri/contributors/contributions/aditi-jain/Racism-in-the-21st-century-India-The-obsession-with-fair-skin/articleshow/28508975.cms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_tanning#Cultural_history
  11. And then companies start hiring men over women for positions and things get shittier for women in the workforce. Why would anyone hire a woman over a man when the woman isn't working at least 2 weeks a year due to menstrual leave and still getting paid?
  12. Really though. If the Muslims of the country are not feeling "embraced" by the UK, does anyone really believe that reading from the Koran for Charles' coronation will help anything? A ceremony for a mean nothing figurehead. It's nothing more than a group of white men patting themselves on the back going "look how progressive we are!" it doesn't really do anything to fix any "strained" relationship with their Muslim citizens. If they really want their Muslim citizens to feel embraced why don't they fix actual problems instead of making cosmetic fixes?
  13. I wonder what Child Protective Services has to say about her welcoming back her child's molester into her home. Some people sure are demented.
  14. The 65th ranked euro skater (falling from 25 at mid-year). Guess they didn't think he would be available in the 5th and liked him enough to reach. Hopefully he's more Zdeno Chara than Boris Valabik. Hell, I'll be happy if he turns into a Hal Gill type.
  15. I don't know anything about his then girlfriend (the one in the recording, apparently V. Stiviano) as TMZ describes http://www.tmz.com/2014/04/26/donald-sterling-girlfriend-v-stiviano-photos/. Sterling's wife of 50 years has called her a gold digger and has sued her alleging she embezzled 1.8M from the Sterlings and alleging she would "get even" for the lawsuit. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-sterlings-wife-describes-girlfriend-as-gold-digger-in-lawsuit-20140426,0,4883913.story#axzz303zH9xK4 Apparently her Instagram was private before this situation and is now public gaining her 10K new followers. http://www.examiner.com/article/v-stiviano-instagram-page-goes-public-gains-nearly-10k-followers-hours As another poster said Sterling has had an issue with Hispanics and African-Americans as accounted on Wikipedia. A lawsuit alleges that Sterling refused to rent to non-Koreans in Koreatown and to African Americans in Beverly Hills. Sterling once said he did not like to rent to "Hispanics" because, "Hispanics smoke, drink and just hang around the building." Sterling also allegedly said, "Black tenants smell and attract vermin." http://articles.latimes.com/2009/feb/13/sports/sp-plaschke-clippers13 "In November 2009, Sterling agreed to pay $2.73 million to settle allegations by the Justice Department that he refused to rent apartments to Hispanics and blacks and to families with children. In March 2011, Sterling won a lawsuit filed by Elgin Baylor, the team’s former general manager, when a jury rejected his claim of wrongful termination and age discrimination." http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2014/04/26/clippers-owner-donald-sterling-tells-girlfriend-not-to-bring-black-people-to-games-disses-magic-johnson/ According to testimony given by property manager Summer Davenport: "Cultivating his image, Davenport said, meant no Blacks, no Mexican-Americans, no children (whom Sterling called "brats") and no government-housing-subsidy recipients as tenants. So according to the testimony of tenants, Sterling employees made life difficult for residents in some of his new buildings. They refused rent checks, then accused renters of nonpayment. They refused to do repairs for black tenants and harassed them with surprise inspections, threatening residents with eviction for alleged violations of building rules." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/etan-thomas/donald-sterling-has-been_b_5219475.html Maybe I'm naive I don't know, but I think this could be construed a few ways. 1. Sterling is a racist. 2. Stiviano is a gold digger who saw the gravy train leaving the station and hoped for one last large cash grab selling the tape and one last opportunity to gain notoriety and possibly revenge for him dumping her. 3. Both 1. and 2. are in play. What I believe to be true is that Sterling is a bigot. Yet, I truly believe he does not harbour hate toward any persons of other races (as he states multiple times in the recording), he is just ignorant. He has old views of minorities, ones that he likely grew up with. The civil rights movement and the fight to end segregation happened while he was in his 20s. He grew up in a culture where you did not associate with people of other races and was probably taught that black people hated white people. The whole apartment issue comes across as him believing Hispanics, African-Americans and families were problem tenants based on ignorant beliefs. It seems to be that he believes Hispanics and African-Americans to be low class or ill-mannered. He had no issues renting to persons of a Korean background for whatever reason (maybe he stereotyped them as upstanding citizens). This whole conversation seems off, as if there is an unspoken underlying issue. Again, maybe Stiviano saw the writing on the wall that the relationship was ending and tried to get him to say something racist in order to sell a story. That's not to say Sterling is completely off the hook. He has done some allegedly despicable things himself. Both parties involved seem like despicable human beings. Finally, we should all know not to trust TMZ. they threw Colin Kaepernick's reputation (and contract negotiations) under the bus insinuating he was a rapist when no charges we're laid against him based on a flimsy story. They don't have a lick of integrity as far as I'm concerned.
