  1. Wonder what the Canucks would have to offer to get Tom Wilson from the Capitals.

First off, I strongly disagree with your view on Eller--in fact, I'd say he's become one of the best bargain deals in the league.  He brings a lot at only $3.5Mper--a perfect veteran 3C who can move up to a 2C in an emergency and his offence is still getting incrementally better.

And if the Canucks (or anyone else) took on Orpik's salary, then they'd have the cap space to keep both Wilson and Carlson (re-signing Carlson from $4M to $7M would be and additional $3M, Wilson might warrant a raise from $1M or so).

If Wilson is to be traded, it will be for significant futures as I stated originally.

All that said, I think if we're patient with Virtanen, we'll have a player with similar attributes, minus the nasty Wilson brings.

@Undrafted What do you think the Caps would offer in a potential Orpik cap dump? Beck Malenstyn was a player the Canucks were looking at and hoping to pick if he reached the Jakub Stukel pick. Not sure the Capitals would give up a guy like that.

Honestly, I don't know much about the Caps farm or prospects, so I couldn't say--I just watch their games on a regular basis with my friends.  I rely on them to pass on news about organizational stuff and that name hasn't come up at all.

If I were to wildly guess what their GM might do, it'd likely be trying to convince one or both of Carlson and Wilson to take a hometown discount.  Carlson might bite if they give him the 8th year; Wilson might agree to a 1-yr deal with the assurance that he'd get paid the year after, once Orpik's deal is off the books.  Both players seem to genuinely want to stay with the organization.
