  3. 2018 NHL Entry Draft

Just a thought, right now we're sitting at 6th. Let's say post lottery we either stay or drop to 7. Would you trade that pick for an established defenceman like Dougie Hamilton? Calgary is rumored to be trying to get back into the first round and they have a plethora of good defensemen. If not for Dougie, Is there a defenseman you would trade for - I'm thinking straight up, one for one. There was also that report of us being in on Subban a while back.

Man, Svech would be a great consolation prize to missing out on Dahlin.
  5. [discussion] Free Agency 2018: to D or not to D?

Its a stretch, but I do have some reasoning to the madness. Carlson is a UFA, so his value is minimal. The contract would be agreed to by us and him and Washington signs the deal so JC can get the 8th year. Wsh does this for a discount on Tanev (some have speculated his value at a 1st and a prospect). So let's say its JC and a 1st for Tanev. If the season ended today, Wsh pick would be 24th overall in a deep draft. I did say package for Trouba - I was assuming we'd have to add, but I didn't specify that. I don't think Wpg can afford to sign Trouba to a big deal as Laine is going to need an extension in 2019 (plus there was his holdout 2 years ago). Let's say we add next year's 2nd to the deal. It's then Hutton or Del Zotto (inexpensive replacement for Trouba that won't tie up $ for Laine) a 1st in a deep draft and a 2nd - which could still be an early 2nd. Do either of these deals get done? Probably not, but it's fun to dream.

Its been speculated by TSN. They also mentioned it as a possibility for Tavares. I agree it's highly unlikely, but it is a possibility - especially if Carlson wants that 8th year
  8. 2018 NHL Entry Draft

I think what this emphasizes is we need to get more picks. Adding a late first to grab Wilde or Miller (or other) along with one of the top 5 defensemen would be huge. Bennings inability (so far) to add picks has been a real hindrance to the rebuild -but that's a topic that's been beaten to death multiple times already...

I'd be happy with any of them, but if I had to rate them; Boqvist, Hughes, Dobson, Bouchard. I will note that I have seen little of their play and this is based off scouting reports and highlight clips and gut feelings. This year, I feel. Like there is no real wrong answer. The one player I am least high on is Tkachuk. Don't ask me why, but I have an iffy feeling about him, especially if we're in that 4-5 range. In the end Im just excited to add another high end prospect to the ranks.

Total fantasy, but if Washington and Carlson were open to a sign and trade of something along the lines of Tanev for signed Carlson (8 years, ~7.25 per), 1st and mid/late round picks. Then flip the Washington 1st and Del Zotto or Hutton to Winnipeg in a package for Trouba (RFA). Boom! Edler - Carlson Stecher/Del Zotto - Trouba Juolevi/Hutton/Stecher - Guddy All of a sudden our defence is set for years to come. Youth, grit, skill. This doesn't even factor in our 1st rounder this year.
  11. 2018 NHL Entry Draft

Tough to say what exactly Winnipeg would want - they're pretty deep almost everywhere. Left side defence might be their weakest position, so I think a deal around Hutton could work. Other than that, you're probably looking at picks or prospects
  12. 2018 NHL Entry Draft

In the conversation of trading for or signing a defenseman; one guy that could solve our long term problem would be Jacob Trouba from Winning. Obviously he's not as flashy as Karlsson or OEL, but he's an RFA after this year (I believe one year away from FA) and shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to trade for or re-sign. He's also in the age group that fits with our developing core. He's numbers aren't great, but he's also left fighting with Buf and Myers for PP time and offensive minutes on the right side (the main reason for his holdout). I don't think he'll re-sign in Winnipeg, plus they'll want to save as much cap space for Lane's next contract. I think Trouba could have a very similar effect to our lineup as Hamhuis did - an under utilized defencemen that needs a chance to be THE guy. As for the draft, I just want to be in the top 4. I'm not a fan of Boqvist, and while the their is plenty of promising talent, I (much like everyone else) view the forwards (and Dahlin) as a much higher level than the rest. If we can get another pick in the 1st or a couple more in the 2nd, id also take a chance on Merkley. But I assume his interviews are going to play a huge role in where he gets drafted and how far he falls.
  13. [Report] Jack Johnson Requests A Trade

3 team deal? Guddy to CBJ, JJ to mystery team, picks prospects to VCR. Guddy might fit CBJ better than JJ anyway
  14. 2018 NHL Entry Draft

We're going to be bad next year regardless (whether we trade Tanev or not). A top 3/4/5 pick would be great, but we'll still get a good player in the first round. I just want us to stockpile picks for next draft. Look what an extra 2nd does for the pool. If JB can grab an extra 1st and/or a couple more 2nds with a few later picks I will be stoked.
  15. [Rumour] Canucks being approached about Tanev

Meh. It's a long offseason. Things change, sometimes quickly. He's not a pending UFA, so there's no rush to deal him unless we're blown away. Teams can get quite reactive after division rivals make big splashes
