Looks like Chapman is back in the lineup tonight. That's good news. Nothing against Espy, but he's a definite downgrade...especially this year....

I'm a bit surprised....I thought something like that would take week to heal up enough to play MLB....

I was reading he'd be out for something like 5 days. Must have just been a precautionary number, I guess.

  2. I called a 2006 rematch for the cup months and months ago, I'm glad to see that it's still a possibility. After the latest blowout, I heard a guy on the radio (not sports radio, just regular morning show) say, "where the hell did Carolina come from?" All I could think was that they've been good for years...

I think Rod wins his first cup as coach this year, if I had to pick. A Hurricanes / Panthers series feels inevitable at this point, and should be a great one.

If I'm Schneider, I'm thinking very seriously at telling every player (except Bo and Chapman) that they have to take a strike...

Never seen so much soft contact on first pitches in my life....:picard:

Springer is driving me nuts lately. I love the guy, but for god sakes, just go one AB without a fly ball right to the defence on the first pitch...

Two other very cool moments from yesterday's game as well....

The first happened before the game. Cameras caught an unsuspecting Charlie Montoyo (now a bench coach for the ChiSox) talking to one of the other coaches, when he is caught up in a bear hug from Vladdy....

According to Hazel Mae, Vladdy tells the other coach (Jose Castro, I think) that he "loves" Charlie and that "He is like my dad"....

The other moment happened after Kevin Kiermaier hit a 2 run triple in the 4th. After sliding in to 3rd head first, KK's batting gloves were covered in dirt and would no longer allow him to grip the bat properly.....so instead of throwing them away, he gave them to a young fan, who was sitting close to the dugout. The kid's reaction is priceless....

Vladdy also throwing balls to a bunch of kids in the seats pregame... I love this team. Kiermaier probably made that kid's year.

In the top 4, yes. Having Schenn back to hold down the bottom pairing, provide actual veteran leadership, and to bring the pain is more than a good idea.

While I completely agree with you and hope management tries to bring him back, I'm thinking Toronto might try to keep him harder than people might think. Sounds like he's ecstatic to be there, and if all goes well with him and the Leafs through the playoffs I can definitely see them try to work out a new deal for him:

    https://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/2023/03/16/luke-schenns-maple-leafs-homecoming-was-a-long-time-coming-this-is-a-dream-come-true.html

    Spoiler

    Quote

Being a Maple Leaf again seems to mean everything to Luke Schenn.

“I’ve often thought about getting the chance to come back, not thinking it would actually be a reality,” said Schenn. “But it’s definitely crossed my mind a couple of times when you’re going through waivers or free agency. You’re always hoping that maybe the Leafs would give me a second chance.

“It never worked out. Maybe the timing wasn’t right. And now I do feel that the timing obviously is right, and I feel more prepared and ready for this opportunity.”

The time is now. On Friday night against the Carolina Hurricanes, Schenn will play his first game as a Maple Leaf in Scotiabank Arena since 2012, when the place was called the Air Canada Centre.

“It’s going to be … I don’t know … I can’t even put it in words,” said Schenn. “It’s going to be crazy. I just think of all the memories, coming up through that tunnel from the Leafs room into the home arena. Crazy. Obviously unbelievable fans. And I can’t really describe it.

“I don’t really know what it’s going to be like. But put it this way, I’m fired up for it.”

“I know what a special place it is here to play and to be a part of the city,” said captain John Tavares, who has played with Schenn internationally. “He’s had an incredible journey and continuing to play well through ups and downs. He’s shown what a valuable player he is, what a piece he can be for any team and obviously a team in a position like ours.

“He’s excited. He thinks highly of our group and how he can come in and help and push us over the top.”

Great things were predicted for Schenn, drafted fifth overall by the Leafs in 2008. He was traded to Philadelphia for James van Riemsdyk, and things started to go sideways. Though he got to play with his brother Brayden for a few years, the game seemed to be passing Schenn by. Teams valued skating and puck-moving blueliners over the brawny, stay-at-home Schenn types.

He went on waivers, he went to minors, he started playing for close to minimum NHL salary. He continued to work on his game and enjoyed a late-career renaissance. His life changed as the seventh defenceman for two years in Tampa, getting his name twice on the Stanley Cup.

The 33-year-old turned himself back into an everyday NHL defenceman in Vancouver where he was a plus player (plus-nine) on a bad team.

“My career definitely hasn’t been a straight arrow to the top,” said Schenn. “It hasn’t been easy or anything like that. But every experience, every up and down, I’ve been grateful for it because it’s led me to where I am today. I’m thankful for every opportunity I’ve gotten, even though some of them haven’t been easy in the moment.”

That trade to Philadelphia happened a day after the Leafs selected Morgan Rielly fifth overall in 2012. Though he practised mostly with Jake McCabe on Thursday, it would surprise no one if he ended up getting rotated in with Rielly, especially with coach Sheldon Keefe insisting on dressing seven defencemen.

“We’ve crossed paths and chatted,” said Rielly. “He lives in Kelowna; I get up to Kelowna in the summer. We’ve never played together, but we’re going for dinner and we’re getting to know one another a little better.

“He appreciates it on a full-circle level. Not just grateful to play for a good team, but to come back here after starting his career here. You can tell it’s a cool opportunity for him, and he’s going to try to make the most of it. We’re all going to do that.”

Excluding Luke himself, the Leafs have 6 forward and 2 other defensemen contracts expiring in the offseason (plus ROR on LTIR). I don't think it would be hard for them to keep him around if the interest is mutual.

Yes, he is an offensive defenseman but his ideal partner should also have some offensive acumen. If Hughes is in the offensive zone his partner will be as well and I can see the argument that the partner should have some complementary offensive skills (eg. a good shot).

I'm finding the power play possibilities exciting. Hughes can get the puck from anywhere to anyone. I'm already picturing him and Hronek switching sides, dancing along the blue line, QH having a nasty one-timer option in FH to the left and a sneak tip magician with Kuzmenko by the net. Throw Petey in there with his own one-timer as a solid option, and wow does that PP look potent, even from the perimeter.

Not true. NYR wanted to trade Vitaly for Hoglander but Canucks waited and they got desperate to free cap for the Kane trade. Just because NYR gave him away does not prove that he’s worthless.

Like Ehrhoff nearly 14 (!! ) years ago. Obviously completely different players/values, but the point is valid. Return isn't always based on solely on that value.

The trade still can't go through.  Are you factoring in Yamamoto's return?  He is still currently on LTIR but is now day-to-day. Also, Edmonton isn't going to play out its season with only 21 skaters on its roster.  The Sharks have to retain even more cap, which gets ridiculous.

@jyu's proposal is definitely what San Jose wants, but Edmonton simply can't make this trade because it creates roster AND cap issues.  The Sharks and Oilers need to look elsewhere if they want to be realistic.

It includes Yamamoto's return, yes (top of sheet); roster stays at 21 skaters (2F + 2D out, 1F + 2D in via trade, + 1F back in Yam). Obviously running with 21 isn't ideal, but there's technically nothing stopping them. I would definitely agree that they *should* look elsewhere (second trade or involve a 3rd team) to help manage the cap situation, and would expect any competent GM to pursue that. However, this is the same Kenny Holland that gave Darnell Nurse $9.25M for 8 years; some screws must be loose in there somewhere, right?

Maybe they can trade Kane back to the Sharks?

Call me crazy but I'd give up Broberg and two 1st rounders to make this happen.

Barrie is good offensively but Karlsson supersedes him.

Barrie, Poolparty, and one more cap dump, Broberg, 2023 1st, protected 2024 1st for Karlsson and whatever depth player they could squeeze in.

The Oilers won't have forever to win a cup with McDavid and Draisaitl.

At this point, I'd like to see the cup come back to Canada and I know the teams in the East have no chance with how strong it is.

    Calgary is struggling.

    Oilers are the only bet.

Plus, it's going to be exciting to watch the Oilers.

NHL needs more major player movement like this.

Something like this could work. SJ would still have to retain something on Karlsson, but they're obviously rebuilding and can handle it for four years after this one. An example, based on your post:

    ScreenShot2023-02-16at10_06_48AM.thumb.png.0816198f2ce9c67a54d68afed34a7b4f.png

This meets roster requirements and squeezes both teams under the cap for the remainder of the year. Edmonton could still try for a pure cap dump trade with another team as well. I think it would have to be Foegele though, as he's the only one making enough dough who would be expendable from three forward group. Or switch him and Eyssimont out for another D swap.

Did Trotz get fired or did he leave? I think he left. Something has been wrong with the NYI for some time. While I think they fight for a wild card to the end they could just as easily drop to #12 or worse. Fundamentally I think there is to much there for that to happen. Hang in their Bo and give us a #13!

Obviously I'm hoping for the earliest pick possible, but wouldn't it be just too fitting if now that Bo has switched to #14, that number ends up being the pick the Isles give us? ;)

I think it is safe to say we all think Boeser is a great person/teammate.  I think it is also safe to say he has underperformed this year.  However, it is also important to note that, while underperforming, he is still the 15th highest scoring RW in the league.  He is 22nd overall with limited pp time.  He is heating up right now and, I think, will be a top 15 scoring RW in the league by season's end.  So in a league that has roughly 128 players playing RW he is top 20 for sure.  This means he is a 1st line RW.   He is the 17th highest paid RW in the league and has been the 15th highest scoring RW over the past 4.5 years.

I am not saying we should not move him for the right package, just that we should discuss him like a top line player and not like a cap dump.

I would agree with this. The way people are looking at him value-wise is all because of his contract, which I think most of us agree is too high a cost for what he's bringing. It's also why this trade includes the max retention. At half price, he is an exceptional value that I think is worth that first round pick (certainly not a cap dump), especially for two additional years. Any reference to a "dump" in my post should be attributed to Ferland's LTIR contract (which may not fit everyone's definition of a dump these days), or Mantha, as he is underperforming and holds his full cap hit.

  12. Let's make a splash.

Been a long time since I've made a thread, but oh boy are things getting interesting with this team. Lots of changes, and it's pretty clearly time for some significant ones to be made. We all know where this team struggles, and what has to do be done to get back on track; Obviously it won't happen over night ("rebuild the defence!"). I've been trying to look around the league for young, upcoming RHDs to try to poach, which is never easy as they are essentially gold. However, I think there might be something to be done with the Capitals surrounding Vincent Iorio, a player I really like and, to me, could be a central piece of a trade (as well as a draft pick, in this case). We have some cap space to use now, and they need to make some to bring back Carlson soon. So, without further adieu, here is an idea:

First off, move Pearson to LTIR already. He's not coming back this season. After that, a nice juicy trade for the media:

    Quote

    To Washington:

    • Michael Ferland - $3,500,000 on LTIR
    • Luke Schenn - $850,000
    • Brock Boeser - $3,325,000 (50% retained – ouch, I know)
    • Jack Rathbone - $850,000 (non-roster)

    To Vancouver:

    • Anthony Mantha - $5,700,000
    • Martin Fehérváry - $791,667
    • Vincent Iorio - $845,000 (non-roster)
    • 2023 1st Round Pick

Lots of moving pieces, but it solves some problems for both sides.

    Why Washington considers this:

    • Boeser replaces Mantha on their third RW (according to recent dailyfaceoff lineups). Mantha has not been producing at the level I think Washington expected when they traded for him in 2021. Similarly to Boeser, he takes up a lot of cap for what he's bringing. Considering Kuznetsov is their acting 3C (Strome playing with Ovie & Sheary on line 1, Backstrom as 2C between Oshie & Johansson), Boeser at the price would be a very welcome upgrade. This sheds $2.375M in cap, while potentially upgrading their winger depth.
    • Schenn, well, everyone here knows what he brings and how any team would be lucky to have him. With Carlson coming back, Schenn would bolster their RHD depth while they try to keep winning while they still have their Ovechkin-era core, at least for this season. With his experience, he could even move up to their 2nd RHD spot ahead of Van Riemsdyk and Jensen.
    • Both sides of their D are aging out, and Iorio is really their only substantial, signed prospect. While he could/should be worth more than Rathbone (RHD vs. LHD), they'll need LHD as well. Swapping these two basically allows them to add more perceived value to Vancouver, as we desperately need to rebuild our right side. This while they still end up with a D prospect for either side that they will need to step in, regardless of L/R. Fehérváry is included in this trade essentially to make room for Schenn on their right side, as he has been playing there with Matt Irwin on the left. However, he is 23 and listed as a LD, so if they want to retain some youth with him and move him back to the left, swap him out for one of their other expiring LDs (all of their D expire this year, except for Carlson). Basically, the Rathbone-Iorio aspect of this trade is relatively neutral to Washington, and positive for Vancouver. Rathbone is closer to the NHL, and as mentioned, most of their D expires after this season, leaving it wide open for him to make the team next year.

    Why Vancouver does this:

    • We're tanking, Mantha is underperforming. That's fine, if we plan on sucking this year and next anyway. At 28, he's a stop-gap, resulting in better picks for us. Or, he ups his game and becomes another deadline sale next season. His contract expires after 2023-24, when we need to re-sign Petey and Kuzmenko, so it will be $5.7M we can reallocate at that point.
    • We basically "weaponize cap space" to shift a great LHD prospect to a great RHD prospect. Iorio is 20 years old, 6'-3", 201 lbs, and from Coquitlam. Isn't the highest point-getter, but certainly fits the mould of "tough to play against."
    • All this drama surrounding Boeser ends. I think most of us love the guy, it's just he's not bringing what we all expected at this point and could use the change of scenery. A necessary casualty of the "culture change." His dead cap for the next two years basically replaces the dead cap we have expiring from the Virtanen/Holtby buyouts + Bo's retention.
    • 2023 1st round pick – this is where I think the value balance is decided. I'm sure many of you will say, "No way! A first rounder for our junk parts? You're dreaming!" I have listed this as a First Rounder because obviously for us, that is ideal. However, I think there could be a fair debate that this pick could be anywhere from a 1st-4th rounder (in 2023-2025), existing to balance out the rest of the trade. So before hanging me for overvaluing our "junk," consider that it's a pretty open variable of the trade; downgrade as you see fit. It's listed on "Why Vancouver does this" list because obviously, a pick is always positive.

So. Running this through all the CapFriendly calculators and such, this all fits under our cap, meets trade and roster requirements, and allows the Capitals to activate Carlson to their active roster. Potential lineups for both teams would be (of course, switch wingers and defensemen around based on whatever is going on with either team):

    Washington:

    Ovechkin - Strome - Sheary

    Johansson - Backstrom - Oshie

    Milano - Kuznetsov - Boeser

    Aubé-Kubel - Eller - Hathaway

    Wilson

    Gustafsson - Carlson (on return)

    Orlov - *Van Riemsdyk

    Matt Irwin - *Jensen

    *Schenn

    Kemper

    Lindgren

    Rathbone to AHL

    Ferland to LTIR

    Vancouver:

    Beauvillier - Pettersson - Mantha

    Podkolzin - Miller - Garland

    Joshua - Dries - Kuzmenko

Di Guiseppe - Aman - Lazar

    Studnicka

    Hughes - Myers

    OEL - Bear

Fehérváry (back on LD) - Dermott

    Stillman-Burroughs

    Martin

    Delia

    Iorio to AHL

    Late 2023 1st Rounder

I think that's a pretty good playoff roster for Washington if they're looking to keep up with some of the teams around them. We can muddle around a bit more this and next year. We will have to find a way to make some space in the offseason, however. Trade Myers for magic beans, and/or Garland for another pick.

    Loosely, I see this as:

Mantha + 2023 1st Rounder = Boeser (cheap) and Ferland on LTIR (ability to activate Carlson without further... headaches)

Schenn + Rathbone = Iorio + Fehérváry (or Irwin)

    Ehhhhh?

    * I should add that I know people are probably going to say, "Mantha was traded for Vrana + Panik + a 2021 First + 2022 2nd! No WAY they trade him for Boeser and an LTIR dump!" To that I say – well, that sounds like a WSH problem. They goofed a trade just like we did with OEL; doesn't mean they were valued properly at the time, and it shouldn't have any bearing on their value now. They need to clear space for Carlson, Mantha is probably the easiest out. It's him or Oshie/Wilson (both of which have M-NTCs), and we could take either one of them in exchange if they wanted that as well.

(RD) Luke Schenn to WAS for (RD) Vincent Iorio

I really like Iorio. I've been contemplating something between VAN-WSH, surrounding him and probably Mantha (underperforming, I'd say) to help them clear space for Carlson to come back.
