What is the difference between the China of today and the Nazi Germany of the holocaust?

@112 they don't discriminate on who they commit crimes towards.

I don't understand why meat tends to be so expensive relative to other foods. Why are we not killing more animals?

Growing up on a farm, and then running my own for many years got me spoiled with lots of available meat. We always had a couple freezers just for home use. I think the cost of fruits, veggies, and healthy foods is too high. Good quality and healthy food should be affordable for everyone. Maybe Canada needs food stamps?

raise welfare to $3,000/mo imo

With automation, and the 1%/10% making even more, yes EVEN MORE $... There needs to be a balance in this world, it's causing a lot of pain.
Not so much welfare, but there really should be a stipend for all humans. There will be eventually, but the worlds population will need to shrink significantly.
ROBOTS, PAY FOR US ALL. That's the future...

Oh,you mean to be able to live AND eat in Vancouver Victoria Toronto,it's getting out of hand.so many homeless and the government talks economy(for the rich).
How about do your elected jobs and start helping honest Canadians(the rest of us),try that on for size for a change, the rich really don't need your help.
-
@Jimmy McGill You are right, not enough people realize the importance of disability insurance. One's ability to work is the most valuable asset most people possess.

are there any recreational ball hockey leagues in the city that people would recommend? i'm kind of itching to play hockey lately, but i couldn't manage the cost of playing on ice.
-
I play in the Victoria Sport and Social Club. It's a pretty great league, but no help to you as it looks like you are on the mainland. You might want to check out Urban Rec, it looks pretty similar to the VSSC.

wow.. just learned Harold Bloom died. he was polarizing, but the literary community should mourn.

when are we going to do the smart thing and legalize every drug?

oh for sure- and there are psychotherapeutic potentials, especially within the realm of psychedelics. i think there are people who know how to use them well, responsibly and to benefit today without a trained practitioner overseeing/guiding them, but there are revolutionary possibilities within the scope of psilocybin talk therapies imo. if research into it weren't so stilted by government and ideology throughout the past decades, i think we could have made very big strides in health and psychology by now. there's been a lot of wasted time.
what i had more in mind when i wrote the status, though, was the likely benefits it would have on the lives of persons with hard substance disorders; they'd be able to know their product, overdoses would be much less likely, and buying from regulated sources would better compel them to seek help, treatment and a healthier community. it would also be nice to get money away from the illegitimates making money in the trade right now.
one can dream

Just look at the mess the government has done with legal pot,it was easier to get before it was legal, and It is about helping people, not always about money.
Corporate Canada has made it twice as expensive and half as potent,
It would be like going to the liquor store and buying a bottle of Scotch that was half water and more expensive, just as example.
Legalize all drugs and tax them accordingly to the bight they are on society, and big pharma might have to kick in billions for the damage they have done with opiates,so I really doubt this happens.
Hopefully the courts can help with that.

ever notice how people who say they're a little weird aren't weird at all but more so just really insecure?

I've never voted in my life and am not starting now.

I get not feeling aligned to anything in our current system, but I personally think it's always worth it to vote for whatever party/individual most closely agrees with your views, or is at least headed in a direction that gets closer to your wishes (even if it's not close at all).
In all fairness, no one is getting what they "want" here. It's just one big compromise.
-
@Alflives - huh; I've heard of spoiled ballots, but I didn't know what they were/what purpose they served. Thanks for the information--I appreciate it and will look into it more.
@Jimmy McGill - a lot of my values and views come out of my lived experiences. People are typically very critical of the way I think about politics--but very few of them, I think, can relate to the life I've had. I've been living in Canada my whole life but feel like a foreigner. People for whom the current government/parliamentary/judicial/etc structures work can never well comprehend that they don't work for some people.
@Ceres - you should know after that vigilante shot that I'm an all-or-nothing thinker. :p

@112 There's a lot of mental illness going on in that country. Just so you know.
-
@Dazzle - go back to my other status update and respond to my questions there if you want to engage, thanks. You obviously don't 'pity my ignorance' if you're not willing to help me out of it.
-
man, ACT teams are disgusting. people don't deserve to lose their liberties in processes that aren't even judicial. these 'assertive treatment' agencies really hurt people.

Like, sorry if I don't believe in the same abstract concept as you, dude.
But if you do pity my ignorance- could you enlighten me to your level of proper understanding? I have a few questions that might cure my blindness on this topic if you're able to answer them.
How is mental illness reconcilable with Kantian free will/his compatibilist thoughts?
Does mental illness exist of itself or only in relativity to healthy brains?
Would you believe me if I told you I had an extended interaction with a sorcerer earlier this year or would you attribute it to mental dysfunction? Why?

even gretzky's without a contract right now-
no reason we couldn't sign him
anything can happen
really though i just want something exciting to happen/to get a player who fits in really well with the current group, is young, and could help keep the roster round when/if players like Hog/Pod break onto the team in a couple of years.

I'm expecting Demko to be our clear #1 for at least the next decade now.

I thought they improved service to the 19. Why am I still waiting 45 mins for a bus?

@Gäz ahhhhh....I have memories of taking "the loser cruiser" (oh, I've heard them all having to rely on transit in my University days ) to SFU in winter. Especially the rare times we had a huge dump of snow. Buses couldn't get up the hill so we all had to get off and make the trek up ourselves.
-
@NewbieCanuckFan My lady went to SFU; she does nooooot miss that transit route at all.
