My point is that while I do not believe for a second that it's just in the great expanse we call the universe, the odds of us coming into contact with another civilized group in my lifetime seems quite low for a multitude of reasons.
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but we may have already had our 1 chance to contact them but missed out because the advanced species sent messages too early for us to even detect them. It could be a case of us entering the jungle and trying to explain calculus to a chimp, for a poorly framed simile. After all, remember how young radio transmissions even are relative to the age of the universe. Not to mention how slowly they actually travel through space. Think about how many light years messages have to travel to get anywhere outside our galaxy, let alone somewhere, and how fragmented they become as they move light years away from us. Becoming jumbled, or muffled, in a sense.
Lots of variables, and there's no doubt that it's fun to think about, for me anyways.
