  1. Unless some miracle happens (Petterson shatters expectations) there's no one in our system who's going to be a 1C on a winning team. Get real guys. I guess we might have a 1C in the way that Derek Stepan and Jordan Staal are technically a 1C's in the NHL. But those guys are 2C's or 3C's on a contender. Most likely we'll end up with 3 2C's and have them slot on whichever lines fit. One of those will be considered the first line, so there you go. If you want a true star 1c we'll have to draft him in the future or trade for him. There's no one to promote.
  2. Why do you watch?

Can you imagine if someone actually scored 5 goals and then Safeway didn't give the person a million dollars? I'd spend the rest of my life attempting to collapse the chain.
  3. Why do you watch?

Yes, I watch because every year is an important year in the team's history, whether it seems like it or not. It was a lot more emotional cheering for the run in 2011 because I saw those years where Burrows and Bieksa came out of nowhere, Kesler was a 3rd line shutdown grinder and the Sedins were thin kids that couldn't keep position on the puck. I saw the impact of Sundin's short time here on the Sedin's game. I saw the Trevor Linden and &^@# Messier saga and know intimately how thankful I am that Linden decided to come back to the organization. I know how excited I was the day that the Canucks finally got a legitimate goaltender in Luongo, or that a complete busted pick like Patrick White 4 years earlier helped get us Erhoff. In a few years when this team is competitive again, I'll appreciate it more knowing how lucky we were to grab Stecher from college, knowing how unsure the reclamation projects of Bae and Granlund were. I'll know how conflicted I was at the loss of Schneider and how happy I am now that we got Bo instead. If Virtanen helps us lift the Cup I'll remember the $&!# he took from everyone in 2016 and that I saw him grow into a player. 2017-2018 may mean nothing for the Canucks on the pages of history if you glance over it, but it may mean a lot if you look back critically years from now.
  4. Canuck Rivals.

Although the few Chicago years were fun, you'd have to have started watching hockey after the lockout to consider them our biggest rivals. Remember that roller coaster game 7 in 2004 where Matt Cooke tied it late and then we immediately lost in OT? I almost died. That was way worse than any of the Chicago losses
  5. Making a case for a 2017-2018 playoff berth

Um, no. Outside of Vegas and Colorado there's a good case that we're the worst team in the league without Miller to rob games for us. I'm pretty confident we'll be a lottery pick again.
  6. Yakupov and his agent will take anything they're offered or Nail won't be playing in the NHL ever again. No team in the league is desperate enough to promise the guy top 6 minutes.
  7. Guys like Joe Sakic are on record as saying they'd never consider playing in a Canadian market, especially Vancouver in Joe's case, because of all the media distraction. It's a much better lifestyle playing in Anaheim or something, going to play your game, making your money and then not being stopped at every restaurant you go to for a soundbite.
  8. Is it time for offensive zone possession calls?

Yeah, please don't copy the best, most popular sport in the world. It has nothing of value to add to our woefully unpopular game. Every other major sport has calls that can simply switch possession, and this isn't even that major, it's not a bad idea to theorize about.
  9. timeline to contention

Yep, it's going to be weird when the California teams are all rebuilding or underwhelming and the Alberta teams are strong. The Pacific could be pretty weak for 3-5 years coming up here which gives us a decent shot at playoffs in that window. Maybe near the end of that we can think about contending for a Cup.
  10. What happens with Washington?

The most important things teams can do is keep their contending windows open. Who knows? Two years from now a good but weaker Caps team may avoid their dragons of Pittsburgh and New York, make it to the final and beat a Cinderella West team who shouldn't be there. Hell, could be a cakewalk. You can't panic and blow up a window just because the internet makes fun of you. Look at Anaheim, they broke their dismal game 7 record last night. Should they have blown up the team last summer?
  11. What happens with Washington?

They definitely went all in this year because they have a lot of free agents in the summer, but they're still a deep strong team and they'll do what Chicago, Pittsburgh, etc do and retool. They'll lose some guys, but other free agents will be willing to sign to pad their numbers with Ovi and Backstrom. They might not be as strong in the regular season for the next few years but the window is by no means closed. Panicking and selling off all-stars is the dumbest thing Washington could do.
  12. timeline to contention

Pretty much. You get your window to contend for a Cup and you hope you win it. Some teams get longer windows than others from franchise players and win multiples (Detroit, New Jersey, Chicago, Colorado, Pittsburgh). Some teams get long windows and manage 1 Cup (Anaheim, Dallas) and some "waste" it all (Washington, New York, San Jose). Some teams only get a few seasons in contention but manage to pull out a win (Boston, Tampa and LA were really only strong contenders for 2-3 years around their wins, LA impressively managed to win 2 in their 3 seasons of relevance). Some get a few seasons as contenders and don't make the most of their chances (here's WCE Canucks and Sedin Canucks, Ottawa circa 2007, etc). Others have a crazy run one year and win it all out of the blue (Carolina). There's no way of knowing which Canucks window will finally be successful, but there will be future windows. We'll have another set of seasons like the WCE era and the Sedin era. You just have to actually have to stay healthy, get some good matchups and have a little luck.
  13. 'Canada's Team': Why do we all hate each other?

I've been to Toronto many times and I may as well have been in a different country. Why should I cheer for Toronto? I might as well cheer for Tampa Bay. I have no reason to care about either city.
  14. Who do you hate more....Kesler or Lucic ?

Did he give 1 or 2? I always though Pittsburgh was on the list as well. Not that that makes it any better..
  15. Article - Video replay is ruining professional sports

Oh I know, I watched it. So it doesn't work anyway. Sabers fans would probably be less salty if it was just a snap on ice decision that was wrong rather than a studied decision that was still wrong. Another reason to not even bother.
