  1. Ben Kuzma writes that Benning is looking for a PTO that will come in and compete for a spot:

‘If we’re bringing a guy in on a PTO (professional tryout), I want to be honest that he’s got a chance to sign a contract, if he performs well’ — Canucks general manager Jim Benning

With camp starting in a couple days the UFA invite list is really slim pickings....

    • Gabriel Fontaine - 24 year old C but a career AHL'er (maybe wanting to be a tweener/injury filler?)
    • Michael Haley - bottom six/grinder
    • Alex Chiasson - I feel this is a target PTO for Benning (middle six/PK/PP2 for Oilers the last while) *NOW SIGNED TO A PTO*
    • Erik Gustafsson - 5th team in 5 years? journeyman status
    • Jon Gillies - ECHL/AHL callup goalie depth
    • Michael Dal Colle - big body, former high draft pick prospect, but is nearing full draft bust status (Benning might take a flyer on him like he's done with other busts)
    • Ben Hutton.....nawhhhh
    • Cory Schneider - signed w islanders
    • Nikita Gusev - signed on with Leafs

Still think Alex Chiasson is the guy coming to camp (especially with Motte injured and Pettersson likely not starting camp). Rick Dhaliwal name dropped Brandon Pirri as well (journeyman player).

  2. Online beat reporter in Edmonton (Matheson?) and other social media users are suggesting Canucks are kicking the tires on UFA Tyler Ennis for a camp tryout. Smallish but speedy forward; bounced around a few teams, but might be good 4C depth since Motte appears to be out a while yet and Sutter in the twilight of his career is a walking injury bug?

  3. Canucks have had some success with bringing in camp invitees on a tryout. With a tight cap and top 9 spots all but locked, there may not be much to look at currently in the UFA bargain bin.

One name worth mentioning? Nikita Gusev (dressing room and camp influence for kid Podkolzin)?

    Other notables (now updated):

    - Big Z Chara (now with NYI? 1 year deal?)

    - Mark Jankowski (NJ)

    - Corey Schneider (for Abbotsford?)

    - Ryan Donato

    - Bobby Ryan

    - Alex Chiasson  - signed with Canucks PTO

    - Thomas Jurco

    - Michael Dal Colle (high pick prospect...remember him?)

    - Tyler Ennis (Ott)

Do the Canucks bring in the next Owen Nolan, Brendan Morrison or Peter Schaeffer for this year's camp?

  4.

Another quick end to the season and to the summer/offseason where it's expected the team (from management to roster moves) will be making some significant signings and changes.

Who goes? Who signs? Who is drafted? Who is traded? Your guesses here!

    Management

OUT: Weisbrod, Clark and Assistant Coaches (Baum & Brown)

IN: Gorton (Boston connection), Sedins and a new goalie coach

    Draft

End up at #10th overall; draft Kent Johnson

    Trade Targets

Top 4 D (someone like Jake Bean or Matt Dumba)

3C (if they don't sign a UFA target; a player similar to Adam Lowry)

Grit player (see Ferland, Dorsett, Hawryluk type annual player)

Benning will be reported chasing top end free agents this UFA frenzy (Cizikas, Nugent-Hopkins, Landeskog) but will end up short

    UFA

They'll likely overpay/add term (as in the past years)*

One name to look for: Weisbrod's former Flames pick, Mark Jankowski (soon to be UFA) as the Sutter replacement

    D targets = Johns, Forbort, J. McCabe

Top 9 targets = Chiasson, Hoffman, Nosek

    Kraken Select...

    Zack MacEwen

    Roster Changes

    Roussel, Virtanen (buyouts)....

Eriksson buried in the AHL (one last year)

    Beagle/Ferland = LTIR/Retired

    Trade Bait

    Boeser

    Juolevi

    Schmidt

DiPietro or Lind (AHL for AHL/NHL tweener 1:1 type deal)

  5. Tryamkin isn't going to stick around riding pine for much longer. Either bolting to KHL or JB will trade him where he can play.

    Ho-Sang/bailey for tryamkin

or a deal with Boston like Spooner for Tryamkin

  6. Seahawks with a nice pick and have a few more picks to shore up the O line.

that live media frenzy with that Ole Miss player was crazy. Talk about getting your phone "hacked" during the draft...??

  7. Bob McKenzie said the Canucks want to sign Demko and I don't blame him. We have Bachman on a 1 year? and Cannata who just will never play here. So he'll basically have 1A duties in the AHL all next year; . He'd be silly not to sign and get that big contract earl in his career.

  8. This really isn't starting to look good.....maybe Demko feels he is NHL ready and unless Miller/Markstrom are shipped off, he's not going to Utica?

I'd trade both goalies to give Demko a spot - he's that good (or will be in a couple years)....

Brock just announced on Twitter that he will be returning to UND next year.

Not a bad thing, it'll be interesting to see how he does without his line mates, they had the chemistry of the WCE

and we're off to a great offseason :( Boeser has nothing to prove in UND. CDC will explode if both Demko and Boeser don't sign with Vancouver.

  10. News1130 reports he'll take a few weeks to think about it... Not exactly what you want to hear.

i think he's waiting out who the new goalie coach will be. If he goes senior signing him could be a problem
