  1. I mean, at least we have Garland and OEL and all that sweet sweet cap space.

    Right?

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

I have to agree.  The OEL/Garland Trade is looking worse and worse in hind sight every game we see.  Losing those top 10 picks, also is problematic.  It is gambling/shortcutting that has consistently put this club behind the 8 ball for the last decade or so.  Coupled with a development system that only seems to really work if the player is talented enough to skip it, we're looking more Oiler-esque than not.

This roster is built wrong.  It is supplemented by not that much, and I don't know if there is any easy fix to quickly turn it around.   BUT, if we can accurately diagnose and do surgery on this roster, I still believe that we can turn it around with a semblance of the core.

There are some good pieces, and some good pieces implemented by this management group.  Mikeyev, Kuzmenko, Bear, etc aren't the problem, per se.  So at least those added pieces have value.  But we need to figure out Horvat, Miller, Myers, OEL, Schenn, Pearson, etc.  If you don't stick the landing on this before next season, we are in for a long term pain, with nothing in the pipeline that can be seen as impactful in terms of reinforcements from Below.

  2. i'ld like to hear JR or PA come out and say, we know what the problem is, but be patient, we're working to change things around. i could live with that. could you?

Give it 10 more games, and if we continue this trend, our season is officially done.  Just looked at capfriendly, and buying out pearson and poolman actually makes sense.  you end up saving a few million in cap space tho with poolman, you'd basically get the same just sending him to play in the minors and not having the double term caphit.  Myers isn't worth it, but you could retain 3 million and he's a trade chip again.  Worth it for one year.  OEL, we're stuck with barring him actually retiring.  Yet another Swede who has a retirement contract in vancouver, much like eriksson.  You eat that and try mitigate the damage with his ...intangibles playing in the press box or 3rd pairing.  We're now 3 years away from anything worth mentioning because of Jim Bennings terrible trade.  I'd look squarely at ownership for that.  There are no shortcuts, only death by a thousand paper cuts with the way this team has been managed.

  3. In the past month, I've heard about shortage of lifeguards, home doctors, nurses, airport workers, programmers, dishwashers, security guards. Where did all the workers go?

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

It really is a combination of people retiring, competition for workers giving workers the option to try something different, and a lack of affordability in a lot of our cities.  A lot of people took advantage of the housing market to sell and make bank, and then move to rural, and either retire, or work from home with a better lifestyle bonus.  That in turn leads to housing affordability being a problem....everywhere.  There are so many homes being built, in a higher tax bracket, that when you have the choice to build, as a builder, a house that is expensive or affordable, you go to where the money is, which is tying up all of our house builders.  Then couple that with...not being able to afford housing, you just end up going round and round.  If BC Housing would just focus on housing, instead of social engineering, and pick a few places as up and coming and concentrate there, we'd be better off.  Then you provide financial relief for schooling, and places to live to do that schooling, for trades and services careers.  You chip away at the entire problem and move forward.  Which is the opposite of what our NDP government wants to do.

would do that right now.  Don't see why he wouldn't be able to fit in here, and be a quality depth piece ahead of schenn and behind myers.  And then, flip everyone at TDL!

I do wonder what the addition of Shaw does to our coaching group, as change is definitely needed, and the only one who seems truly safe is Ian Clark.  Will Shaw bring about a change on the defense that will be similar to what Bowness, now the coach in Dallas, had on our d-core back during our last iteration of the glory days?  I remember Erhoff and 5 plugs back there during one point of injury madness, and the team just rolling along like nothing else was the matter.  If we can get that kind of buy in and play, we might turn our weakness into a strength.

I watched this, and there are some definite question marks and some big gambles taking place with this upcoming season.  I think our forward group is poised for success, our goaltending should be very solid, but the defense is ....disjointed.  Myers seems completely out of place, as he doesn't have a stay at home LD to balance out his...style of play.  Hamonic and whomever the 3rd rhd, Poolman? Schenn, etc are not exactly point getters, and then you're really hoping OEL regains form, Hughes progresses, and whomever you have on the 3rd pairing is going to be able to drive play, kill penalties, play defensively.  if it breaks right, the forwards and goaltending might cover for the defense, but if the defense sucks the whole team into a blackhole, you could see a snowball effect that will lead to people getting fired/traded.

  11. benning said, we have players, other teams want. i wonder who they are?

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

Boesser, Petterson, Demko, Horvat, Toffoli, Pearson, Gaudette, Hughes, Edler, Miller, Virtanen.  In roleplayer roles, I could see Beagle, Roussel, Sutter able to be traded with retension.  There are players on our team that other teams would want, but whether or not they want to pay the price to get those players, whether or not we are better without some of those players with different players coming in, is another matter.  Benning has to hope that the Canucks, as presently built, during this great opportunity, come out and shine.  It'll make his job MUCH easier in the off season if the players themselves build up their own value with a significant run in the playoffs.

  12. Canucks fans crying about Benning screwing our cap space don’t look at the fact the NHL took away $4.5 million with Luongo’s recapture penalty and not knowing what the salary cap would be at

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

Don't be surprised if the issue isn't brought forth to the negotiating table.  This was an unfair example of which only we were left on the hook for while everyone else skates around the issue with phoney baloney LTIR claims, then trading those claims around to make a mess of the intention of the cap.  Nobody is happy with this, and it is a loophole that needs to be addressed.

  14. I've never felt more confident in our teams chances come Sept 1st than I do this year.

We've got Petey at a 12 million dollar discount for the next two seasons.

We've got Bo on arguably one of the best non-ELC contracts in the league  ... our goalies only cost 4.6 million and will be one of the best tandems in the league.

Brock will soon be signed at a reasonable dollar... Edler already took a huge discount...

New face in the organization will fight against the Luongo cap penalty and have it removed

Our time is now. The cup will be ours in 2020 and/or 2021

(Sept 2011 Honorable mention... everyone knew that team would dominate and they absolutely did by winning the Presidents Trophy in 2012... becoming the FIRST EVER back to back president trophy champs in the Salary Cap Era)

Have to say, I entered this summer not liking our first few moves, but the other ones work with what we did, and I'm quietly confident that we are going to be a lot better than people give us credit for.  If we can get on a roll, not have the massive losing streaks, and find consistency....oh man.  Add to that Markstrom playing like he did in the last half of last season.  We could be sneaky good.

No way!  Burkie is the replacement for Don Cherry and is way more fun to watch than Old Don and Ron.  Tho if he did come back, we could yell Truculence at every game, but I think Benning has done a fine job of putting some of that on this year's roster.

I don't know, but I'm okay with this.  Actually, ecstatic about this would be my initial response, followed by, no way is this happening, because we wouldn't be so lucky.  Also, if Treliving ends up with both Lucic and Eriksson....does he hate the Flames more than most of us do?

    1. Solinar

I think Hollywood is missing the opportunity to make more heroes, and differing storylines, that incorporate the narrative it is trying to espouse....but that would require them to take chances, and be......creative.

The proof will be in the pudding.  Will this be an actual story driven attempt where everything makes sense, and it is organic, or will it be yet another empty pandering trying to keep people off of their backs while they appear to be virtuous.  I personally think it will be the latter, and not the former, because for all the causes Hollywood espouses, they have little to no depth of understanding of them.  If they truly cared, they wouldn't have systematically preyed on their own, and made it so hard for non-whites to get ahead in the industry, till the walls came crashing down.

I sincerely hope they do a good job, and make a good attempt at making a story that is entertaining and fleshed out.  I personally don't care who plays 007 at this point, as others have pointed out, it is a designation, and it will be cool to see it move between actors, driving home the point it is a designation that you can gain.....and lose.  I also hoped they would have done a good job with Ghostbusters, but that was a steaming pile of garbage.  But, you can gauge from backlash, that there is a definite fanbase, hence another reboot coming up.

  22. Just realized Canucks are paying $8.75 M  per year for two players in their prime who over past two seasons put up 44 goals 99 points and then 30 goals and 87 points.   Injecting that kind of offence into lineup along with their size and nature of play - nicely done Canuck management.

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

Really excited by the moves made this off-season.  In a vacuum, I was kind of angry about some of them as they happened, but taking a step back, and seeing that there is a general direction and vision to it....priceless.  We added 2 legit top 6 wingers, we added 2 defensemen that should change the complexion of the back end.  We should be strong enough to actually be....good!  You know how you fear this moment, like it's some kind of gift that is going to be snatched away?  I think a lot of fans follow this route where we can only win if we have multiple first overalls in the line-up.  But you look back at some of the recent drafts, and Pettersson and Boesser, both under-rated at the time.  Horvat improves every season like a beast.  We just need Hughes and Juolevi to join the party, and Virtanen to get 20 goals and 15-20 assists, and we're golden!  Oh, and goaltending, do we even have to go into that?

  23. the power of chemistry vs skills? about how some players, struggle on one team but flourish on another.

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

It would be interesting if Virtanen had that ability to be a net front presence with a deft hand to tip the puck.  Unfortunately, he has the skills, but I don't know if he has the mentality for it.  He's a north south kind of player, and hasn't shown the presence of mind to be able to muck it out in the corners, get it out to the skilled players, and then directly head to the net to cause havoc.  He kind of plays like Mason Raymond, bursting down the wing, and then firing a lower % shot.

    1. Solinar

      Solinar

As to @mpt, I completely agree with your assessment.  We need some creative 'top 6' centres for our talented wingers to work with, so that they can ply and learn their trade, in a situation that they'll encounter when they're on the big club.  Instead, we seem to want to make a whole bunch of bottom 6'ers, the likes you can find a boatload of whenever summer hits.

I think it is getting to the point where we're going to have to buy an ECHL team to be affiliated with, instead of loaning players to one and hoping for the best.  That way, you can do what Toronto did, which is control two teams and float players back and forth.
