There were definitely options available, if they were looking for good coaches, but the team bad to be reconstructed from scratch, given how bad the roster was from years before. The team, in hindsight, probably should've been rebuilt from the ground up.

It's a bit hilarious that some people talk about Benning being the issue, but won't acknowledge that Gillis was the problem, and the Canucks worsened it by hiring rookie people to solve major issues.

Almost no staff member should be immune to criticism, but the fact that people are still making excuses for Gillis' incompetence with his rosters post 2011 is the reality of what he was like as a GM. He was spoiled with a core in their prime, but left nothing of that sort by the time he was failed. Somehow it's everyone's fault except Gillis.

Actually I was talking about the players, not the coaching and almost everyone at the time, fans and media alike were behind hiring TG as he had experience with young players but I disagreed as per lack of NHL experience

Where did I say Benning shouldn't have been fired?  There is enough blame for both.  Bottom line is Gillis' drafting and trades was simply not acceptable, and he butchered a strong core gifted to him by competent management.  Neither should ever be in a GM position again, but do keep in mind we are still suffering the aftermath of the gross incompetence of Gillis thanks to his refusal to use a compliance buyout on Luongo

I disagree JB did some good things here after gaining enough experience but failed to be able to get better players for the holes not taken by roster core players, there wasn't much available when he signed LE who was the last big name around after the feast of the big teams, and still not much available when he signed Rous/schaller and for some added grit and Beags for leadership. Plus people forget that not everyone wants to come to Vancouver with a lot of idiot fans but point is you can only do as much as you have the ability to do with what's around.

JB's biggest mistake was Green but the reason for that was he had worked with younger players a lot and we had our share to be sure BUT with his experience or lack thereof I mean, at the NHL level, that was bound to fail eventually but too bad BB wasn't available like recently.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was there even a cap system when Gillis was GM?  Hard to compare paying contracts, no?  Drafting on the other hand can be compared.  Take out all the first round picks and Benning is still better at drafting then Gillis ever was.

The way I will see who was the better GM is when which one of them get hired first.  That's when we will know what others franchises think.

I'm sure that other franchises realize what a horrible team this was after the Boston run and exactly how stupid a lot of Vancouver fans actually are thinking we had anything but one of the worst teams going especially following 2012 onward with long term contracts and no depth...

I really feel it was time for a change. Both at the Coaching level and at the GM level, but as we go further into our season, it is becoming abundantly clear to me, that Benning had finally put together a decent club, who can compete at competitive level. Where will we end up? Well in the playoffs, I hope. The team has given us solid confidence, in their ability to compete. We have the tools! Great Goaltending, an all star Dman, and very strong down the middle.

Let us remember who got us here. Let's remember that the Canucks have not added one player to the team in the last 8 games. They have always been here. That is the doing of Jim Benning. That is very applaudable. We owe a great of appreciation to JB for that. This is the good! Personnel wise, he had a plan, he drafted well, and his moves in the last several years, were to his credit.

Now, to his determent, he fumble with his own UFA's loosing valuable asset for nothing, he made moves that were good, yet, still gave a bad taste, because they had future ramifications....an example would be the removal of Ericksson, Roussel and Beagel, and the acquisition of OEL and Garland.........visually, it look like a big win, but there are cap ramification on OEL and the loss of our first hurts the future. Still in the big picture Garland alone makes it look like a big win.

But the single biggest mistake Jim Benning made, the one that cost him his job, was the re-signing of Green. Coaches all come up through the ranks, and those that stay in the fraternity, find where their skill level is, some make it to the NHL, and succeed, other do not succeed, and disappear. others find that they are not head coach matterial, for various reasons, including a failure to adapt to different opposing systems, while others can not lead, others can not make hard decisions, while others can not build lines, and defensive pairings that compliment each other, and some do not have the ability to recognize talent and contributions (past/present or future) Green pretty much falls into all the above. And Benning could not or would not admit to his failure in hiring Green.

People should understand that both the 1sts traded have increased in value, and a good GM, one with the ability to identify good moves, and one who has a extremely respected resume, can navigate those offers, and in the case of Miller and Garland, Rutherford "could" move them for assets, IMO, better than the picks moved for them. So IMO, there was no loss of asset there.

And it will be a issue that Rutherford will have to deal with, one way or another.

Again, Benning built a decent team, but crumbled when having to make the tough decisions on Green..........

Benning appeared to be an honest, and loyal man, and in the end, that took him down..........................but as Rutherford said, it will take another 2 years to fill in the holes

    Ahhhhhh......................another promise!

But, People! Benning was not all bad!

yeah well a lot of people aren't that smart so that was the right thing to do to point that out.. lots still won't get it though.

Yeah, he still needs to play solid but so much, lights out under Boudreau cause the team overall seems to be playing with more structure in there game.

true BUT the reads on when to cover the point and when to cheat in a little to help out the D is terrible, and even go as far as to say some players eyes are just following the player and not looking around to catch the opposing D getting into position for a point shot that has lots of time not only to shoot but opposing forwards collapsing in front to screen.. if we do that against the top teams we're going to lose games. I hope BB sees it on the reel and gets guys to work on it with shaw because we won't get away with it playing the best teams.

We can play with the good/very good teams with Demko playing so well but positioning still needs improvement. Plus taking the man, we don't hit a lot, less risk of injury like that BUT if that changes and other teams get nervous and make hasty bad plays that will help but at least we're not losing to teams we should be beating (Seattle) for instance.

We can only hope right? I cant help but think what this team could do with a couple of players with speed, skill, and size to help that along would do nicely. one F and one D..

     C'mon JR make it happen!

Well earned, for Demko and the east coast bias, was very obvious on the result.

Demko is our boy,  just happy he made it to the roster and at his cap? STEAL!!! so a total bonus playing lights out and helping us win games we might not have won had it been someone "average"

But as great as it is to him saving games, we need to get team D upped a few notches and cover the points better, opposing D men have been way too open and leaves time for their players to collapse in front of Demko and even he can't stop what he can't see. This has got to stop, happening way too much!

Because you would think of all people the GM would have a pulse on the fact these players were going to resign with the Canucks or not… not sure if they had ntc or nmc on their final seasons in nucks uniforms. Don’t care enough to look. But it still stings to loose them for not even a bag of pucks, and to the flames of all teams.

well first.. Markstrom and Tanev? omg this again? We can't afford 2 number 1 goalies and Tanev? what? Keep him and when he gets injured with no other top 4 D to step in, we lose a stretch of games until he gets back, it's happened enough times before so why keep going with the risk, exactly the same with Eddie, and let's even go for Stech here, way over rated and at best a middling D and next to zero offensive upside..

There was a reason their gone, yeah Jimbo should have got something other than a cap dump but considering how OEL and Garland have done and how Quinn has worked out, plus Rathbone just needs another season in Abby, deemed Stech out..

People don't realize exactly how badly we needed that lost cap increase and how badly it F'd us, especially in the tail end of a build..

Toffi would still be here and we might have been able to have 2 goalies BUT no dice.. another reason to hate covid.. grrrr!

Every time I see "JR", I wonder what the heck Jeremy Roenick has to to with this!! ::D

absolutely nothing, I remember when he turned a trade to come here, honestly I wouldn't have either. So a double nothing out of a second time in spirit? lol but anyway yeah I thought the same thing. We need a hard nosed guy just like him and in a d position too, then this team would be even harder to play against by far

Banking on a 5-1 Nux win tonight. Petey breaks out with 2 goals and a assist, and Bo, Hogz, Miller get the other goals. Demko will continue his brilliant netminding tonight. GCG!

and it's only a matter of time before Podz busts out, when he starts scoring, although it's not for lack of trying, just not the best luck but it will come, all he has to do is keep shooting.

Just charge double for everything: seats, parking, beer, wtf the people who get to go can afford it.

    Play the games.

    And.

    Drop the puck!

not sure people would go for that but.. if the government helped out with tax cuts and people had a place to donate to keep it going IF it came to that.. depends how badly people want hockey.

Hockey can be argued it helps keeps our spirits up during a pretty shi-tey times we live in so maybe but who knows ..

Thinking about this a bit more - the NHL/Canucks obviously know something we don't.

Why postpone if this is the new normal for 8-12 weeks? Can't really do that can they? Will the capacity limits change sooner than we think?

Seems unlikely given the current climate but makes me wonder?

Canadian owners are bleeding money with 50% capacity vs games in the states that are 100% but it's all about the bling sir..

How many points will Petey score in the 2021-2022 NHL season?

Hey, let's start off the NHL regular season with a Petey debate.  Cause you know he's my favourite player right?  :)

What say you?  Will Petey have a record breaking year?  Have fun and enjoy...  :)

    petey4.gif

So this is where Petey's jinx started? well Fack! stop that! Ok ok on the serious side, opposing clubs are putting some pretty good defensive players out to face him.. what else are they going to do right? Well hopefully his confidence comes back to his old Alien ways and from figuring out he needs that extra step to get there as this is the best league in the world. Go Petey! You got this!

I figured we had a decent shot of getting to .500 sometime mid January.   Adding the 2/3 ending Greens time here, 9/10 is simply astonishing.   Really quite incredible.    A lot of media writers are taking notice.   If the playoffs started right now, and we were in .... Yes i absolutely feel it's a possibility.   Waiting for the other shoe to drop.   Don't want it too and don't want to get ask to get pinched either.  Or jinx it in any way lol.   We are winning these one goal games now.   And our 5 x 5 play is even better.   Know the odds are slim still...but something special is happening and we are all witnessing it.

Thank God for Demko keeping us in every game..  without him? Not sure we'd be 7-0 or even close to that..

You know your living in an area with a lot of snow, when the entire first floor is buried and you can walk out the second floors windows lol.   And there is a tunnel 10 feet high to your door.   Revelstoke gets like that .... so does Elkford (might have to look that one up). Back East, over 12 winters and counting, the most accumulation ive seen is maybe 3 feet.   But -20 is pretty average , and -30/35 usually comes in for a week or two at the worst.   Blue skys all the time, and it's pretty at a least.   But nothing like the snow we can get in BC...winter of 96 was the most ive seen fall in a 24 hour period, 4 feet lol..drifts buried my truck completely.

yeah my truck is looking something like that now parked on the street as I type this and I'm not looking forward to shovelling it out :(  if only the Nux would have buried all their chances last night in the same manner, would have been 5-6 to 1.. maybe more...
