I’d love to see Tocchet play Podkolzin with Petey and Kuzy. Petey surely can turn him into a 25 goal scorer. And Podkolzin can do all of the dirty work on that line like Burrows used to do with the Sedins. Could help Kuzy too and take the defensive pressure off him. I think Kuzy can hit 50 goals next year. His shooting % is insane

+1 for your whole post!  But this suggestion is exactly what I wanna see next year.  He's the work horse... Smart enough and with both size and grit.  Maybe not quite at burrows smarts but same grit, and passing ability... With even more size and shooting skill.  Like you said though... Maybe not until later next season before he gets the opportunity to show if he's a fit yet.....

On another note, really curious to see if he'll perform in Abby for playoffs.  I'll be paying close attention!

He still plays "tentative" and "scared" it seems....

Yes I agree... He's growing up.  He thinks to much and hasn't allowed himself to loosen up and just play with instinct.  He's still learning to trust himself.  This next year we'll see it come together for him.  It will be a thing of beauty!  He'll be a big part of us making playoffs.... He may not start with the big club but will be a permanent fixture by season end.

dude - we missed matt boldy and Caufield... Pod kaolin is teetering on bust - I like him but I do not like him more than those other guys- Podsz had a ton of question marks around him at the draft and that whole year, Boldy and coalfield had been killing it - classic Canucks - draft someone with questions around them and try to get a "steal" when guys with real upside are staring them in the face

Caulfield will end up being the player that was most talented outside of Hughes.... But retired earlier due to injury.  Boldy was my pick but I didn't think Podz would be there at 10.  So let me ask you... Boeser was picked just after Eriksson-Ek.  Most Minnesota fans felt like they made the wrong pick.  For the first 4 years after draft they were right.  But how do they feel now, do you think?

No doubt Boldy is a great player and probably will get even better but Podz hasn't even scratched the surface yet.  He really has it all, it's just taken longer for all of it to come together.

He'll end up being the 3rd or 4th most important player on this team... Just behind Petey, Hughes and Demko.

Some nights he'll take over all by himself.  He'll be like a kesler when he single handedly destroyed Nashville.  I know he's not yet a center but wouldn't be surprised if he ends up being our third line center that's the best in the league and can move up the line up as top 6 winger.

You wait.  The Podz is coming to take over NHL very soon!!!!

I thought media were fine with Pearson. He obviously has a beef with Canucks on his injury. That’s his prerogative. He’s still a Canuck, making millions of dollars, and needs to be a team player and respond to media questions.
I’d guess he doesn’t want to say much publicly because he is trying to take them to the cleaners financially. That’s unfortunate about his injury, and I feel sorry for the guy on that front, but he looked very much like he didn’t want to be there, or be a part of the team, and that’s a concern to me. Even once he gets healthy, will be put his heart into being a Canuck? And pre-injury, he had 1 goal in 14 games and was -9… will he be much better after not playing for nearly a year at his age?

Unfortunately, I think Pearson's played his last game as a canuck... But hopefully he has a last shot with another team.  I'm wishing him a full recovery and happiness regardless... But there's no room on this team with the excess of wings we already have, and he's not the type of player were targeting going forward.   He gone...

  5. You know what.... Ending 11th... Dead last for the Bedard sweepstakes... Is exactly where we should be.  It seems fitting... Canuck luck if you will.  No pressure... Nothing expected.  Ironically after all the horrible lottery/draft 'canuck luck'.... It just wouldn't surprise me, by some miracle, that we jump into the top three........Boombox Shut Up GIF

What did Calgary fans possibly expect when Flames Mgmt. hired the Meanest Old Pig Farmer from Red-Deer (The Meth Capital of Alberta) they could find - using his outdated autocratic hate and intimidation tactics - from a generation ago - to threaten players into submission.   No reasonably sane person with any self respect & dignity could last 82 games listening to Sutter spew his vinegar and salt upon themselves.  Why do you think their two top players bailed out as fast as they could last year and bolted out of Cowtown on the first horse?

He will be fired in less than 48 hours unless he beats them to the punch and quits immediately after their next loss.  You can bank on that!

My sympathy to all Flames Fans!    We know what it's like to have a bad coach - trust us on that!  Better days ahead......hang in there!

As long as the Islander's pick doesn't win the lottery, the pick is only 1 or 2 spot differece in the late teens. Honestly not that big of an issue. The fear is Islanders win the lottery and drafts in the top 10 this year and implodes next season and we pretty much gave up an unprotected 1st round pick for the 2024 draft.

And maybe the canucks go with one logo and retire the rest... And maybe JT won't have a outburst anymore... And maybe vancouver real estate becomes affordable again.... Crazier things have happened.barack obama GIF

Anyway, I can sympathize.  I was never a huge Horvat supporter - didn't criticize him either, just wasn't that invested in him - but if I had been, I would probably take what he said kind of personal.

Either was I.  Liked his solid game and faceoffs... But felt like when he got the captaincy, I wasn't sold.  But there was no one else more qualified than him at the time (tells us a lot about the leadership void after sedins retired).

The only time I saw Bo through his actions, that he was captain material, was him taking the team on his back against the Blues in the bubble.  If you recall at the time, his wife was about give birth to their son Gunner (such a bad name lol!) and Bo was ornery and driven... Way different then his somewhat aloof chill self.  That was the only time where I said "that's captain material".

I will put his ranking as canucks captains near dead last... Wasn't much of a fan of Luongo or Naslund as captains either.  Lu because well he was a goalie and put into an awkward position.  Nazzy because it seemed to be a burden on him.... With that being said, I don't want to see Petey as captain for the same reason as nazzy.

Our next captain should be Hughes... Hands down!

    Same excuses every year.

When your rookie college D are better than your vets were most of the year that says about all you need to know. Major upgrades are needed theres really no argument.

Well that's the point, the new guys are better than some of our other d.  Our d last year played the same as they did tonight (second and part of the 3rd)... Yet, these new guys just got here and will probably get better as they acclimate to a real system.  I'm hopeful... Lots of work still but it's headed in the right direction.  But it's not the same... That's where we disagree.

They aren’t far with some major upgrades to D and their bottom 6.

We’re still a team that relies way too much on Demko. When the Flames pushed the rest of the team collapsed.

So... Did you look at our lineup?  2 rookie defencemen, whole bunch of injuries. Going against a team that has to win to make the playoffs.  That's not falling apart.  That's surviving... And yes, when you're surviving, relying on goaltending is a given.

If he scores a goal before the season ends, he'll be a real fan favourite. I worry everyone will forget about Rathbone but the two of them are basically the same player - they need to battle hard this summer and come to training camp ready to play. One of them deserves a roster spot next year, the other in our press box or traded. They'd be wasted in the AHL.

So far I can't agree that they're 'basically the same player'. Yes they're both on the small side, can skate well enough but Hirose has the defensive IQ were as Rathbone has the offensive acumen.  But I agree, they will both be fighting for a spot next season... Just not a direct completion though.

101 points division winner. Lost to the Kings in second round. I remember Nedved hounding Gretzky for his stick after the game.

That's right!  I forgot.... They had a great season but disappointed in the post season... Then they were not as good during the 93-94 regular season and just squeaked into the playoffs... Not expected to do much... We all know what came next.^_^

this organization is headed in a great direction and I would compare this work to that of Burke+Nonis and their overall impacts on the 2010-11 run.

100% agree.  Especially how so many more resources and focus on the development side in Abby and abroad.  Very similar feel to the moose years.

    Another great post, thanks!

Yes, I am not getting ahead of myself, I am merely calling out the fans who immediately called this kid a bust after battling mono and injuries.

What he does have is an elite release. He may need some time to refine areas of his game, to which I do not know what he lacks. But what I do see is a shot that is hard to teach. Skating, stick handling and positioning can be taught.

Its a relief to see him return to play and absolutely snipe one and show everyone why he was drafted. I’m happy for him, I support the pick and the fact he was rated to have one of the best shots in the draft is showing, is a great thing. There is hope for this kid, there is potential and with a little patience from this brutal fan base, this kid could become something.

Vancouver has one of the most toxic fan bases. When the team is on a high the fans are on a high. When the team is on a low, the fans lose their minds and lose touch with reality.

I support this team and whomever is at the helm entirely. Even Mike Gillis. Yes I’m sure many have seen my comments on the forums in regards to how badly he destroyed this organization, but that was the cost of trying to win, which I fully understood. I support every pick we make, I understand not every player drafted is going to be a star let alone an NHL player period. This fan base is riddled with insane expectations and are so far out of touch with reality its not even funny.

For the Vancouver Canucks, Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford, this is a good sign. To see our prospect bounce back, show what he is made of and show his stuff, this brings hope to the future and could very well be one of the key cogs in the wheel in a few years. Think of Tampa and how long some of their most important cup players marinated for, before coming in and making all the difference. Or Pittsburghs 1st cup with Malkin on an ELC after being in Russia.

We have the stars at the NHL level already… we just need to be patient for that shooting star to come out of nowhere to light up the sky at the right time. Lekkermaki, Klimo, whomever it is… we have time to be patient. Petey, Hughes and Demko have a ton of good hockey left to play. Lets do it right, lets not sacrifice the future like last time and lets just keep competitive like Boston and St. Louis have done for so long.

I appreciate your level headed view on Lekkerimaki and the fan base.  The only statement I don't fully agree with is the fans 'insane expectation'.

Definitely a toxic culture to a point... But that comes with being so close to winning it all but failing to do so... And in a 'rip our hearts out' devastating way two of those three times.

Getting to my point.... I believe the main expectation is just making the f**king playoffs!  Is that so much to ask?  I really understand the general frustration and I don't think that is an insane expectation.  Hard?  Yes!  But we have the main components for a cup winning core. Now expecting to win the cup?   Unrealistic maybe for another season or two but not insane.

Truth is, until we win it all... The fan base will just get more and more toxic, jaded and apathetic.

More proof our scouting department is far more competent than we've had in a long time

Which is half the battle... It even better when you know as a fan, that the development department is as astute or better than the scouting.  The hope is real for the first time since the Manitoba days.

Tocchet was just on SN360 intermission (Bruins-Blues) and they asked who could be the next captain. Without hesitation, Quinn Hughes was his answer. Kind of expecting Hughes to be donning the C next season.

I agree with Hughes being Captain.  In my view, he has all the right qualities, especially now that we know he has become more vocal in the room since Horvats departure.  Quinn is a no nonsense sort of guy.  Dry sense of humour.  Quite serious by nature, and a quiet stoic confidence about him.  I think he'll be able to demand more from his teammates and they'll listen to him.  I don't think he cares to much if a player is upset with his demands.  Where as I have a feeling Horvat didn't like being the 'bad guy' when it was necessary.

I 110% support Quinn being the next captain of the canucks.... This could also increase the chance of keeping him in the fold beyond his current contract... Not to mention increasing the chance of Petey signing and extension knowing that Hughes is his captain.

I’m not concerned about Hronek’s ability or his character, I’m concerned about his health. We have a history of acquiring health problems: Baertschi, Ferland, Dermott, Poolman, and now Hronek. He is only worth it if the shoulder is not a permanent issue. Oh, you mean the fourth. A fourth has one quarter the value of a second, one eighth the value of a first in terms of the likelihood of yielding a player that plays over a hundred games in the NHL - a minor detail compared to a high first and a high second.

Benning, Benning, Allvin and Benning... Who's our GM now?  Might as well add injured players Gillis, Nonis, Burke, Quinn....etc pick up.  Come on now... He has a shoulder injury that's not 100%.  They've had a look at him and want him to be ready for next season.

Since our focus isn't making the playoffs, let's see what we have in our kids and ahl prospects shall we.

Take a deep breath and worry about something worth while.
