When I first started watching Canucks hockey 18 years ago, the Canucks had two young rookies, Daniel and Henrik Sedin, drafted 2nd and 3rd overall. While they showed promise, they weren't quite what people wanted and many people mocked them for it.Still, they persevered and worked so hard that they became two of the best players in the world for a few years. They let our team right to the cusp of a Stanley Cup and are by far the best Canucks of all-time. I knew their retirement might come this year, but it's almost an unfathomable feeling, knowing they won't be on the roster next year. In all my time as a fan, I've never seen a Canuck roster without the Sedin twins.I'll be forever grateful for what they did and players and as people contributing to the community here. I'm so proud of them and the legacy they've created and will leave. Daniel and Henrik, enjoy your retirement. You deserve a rest now.

"Enjoy the future folks, here it is right now!" - John Shorthouse
That quote and that shift gets me so stinking excited for next year.

@AlwaysACanuckFan Oddly enough, I had trouble finding a simple clip of it on YouTube with Shorty's call.

Anyone notice the insane difference between our home records and road records?
Home: 19-7-3, .707 point %
Road: 13-15-2, .467 point %
Wonder why there's such an extreme difference.

@Ghostsof1915 you're on to me

Definitely just killed the largest spider I've ever had to deal with. Smushed it with a shoe and vacuumed it up. For someone with low-key arachnophobia, let's just say it was a thrilling experience to say the least.

Did an analysis on who I think should've won the Selke last year (2015-16). Interesting results, as always. I always find my results deviate quite a bit from who actually wins.
1st - P. Bergeron
2nd - J. Thornton
3rd - J. Pavelski
4th - B. Marchand
5th - A. Kopitar
6th - M. Stone
7th - J. Toews
I tested on 35 players, but these are just the top 7.

@Jaku I'm at school at the moment, but I'll try to give more info on how I did it when I get home.
-
@Jaku Basically, I took a look at a bunch of statistics I consider valuable for defensive forwards, such as face-off percentage, blocked shots, Corsi, Fenwick, +/-, etc. From there, I picked out the top five from every category to get a wide variety of players. From then on, I simply ranked the players in each category compared to each other. At the end of it all, I totaled up the ranks and the players with the lowest total numbers were the highest in the rankings.
It's worth noting that:
a) I was a bit lazy as I went on and disregarded players near the bottom of each category, so being in the bottom third, say, didn't give you an advantage over being completely last place
b ) I did measure players on points-per-game as well as I find that Selke nominees tend to be well-rounded in offense as well.
If you want, I can show screenshots of my spreadsheet as well.

Great vid by Shannon (TheHockeyGuy) on the human side of hockey:
-
Depends on what you consider a "great guy". i know and have known a lot of NHL players, coaches and management/scouts over the years, and though many have been good people, there are a lot more that are total db's. I've been around Ryan Walter a fair bit and though he might do a lot for charitable foundations etc, face to face he's a total p***k. A complete asshat to the people around him.......that said, that's just my experience.
-
Great work on this, mate
How much involvement did you have in this aside from the keys?
-
Haven't really realized it, but Miller is absolutely on fire as of late.
He's stopped 150 of 157 for a .955 save percentage in his last five games. Really wouldn't mind extending him for one more season if this is what he'll do next year too.
-
I can't remember a time a crowd was ever this loud after a save during regular play:

@Alflives Pavol Demitra.

I just noticed that Ilya Kovalchuk and Brock Boeser had nearly identical rookie seasons:
Kovalchuk:
65 games
29 goals
22 assists
51 points
2nd in Calder voting
Boeser:
62 games
29 goals
26 assists
55 points
2nd in Calder voting

I wrote a new article about Orland Kurtenbach recently! I've decided to start a series focusing on Canucks and their time as Canucks. Special thanks to @smithers joe and @RUPERTKBD for sharing their memories of Kurtenbach! https://hookedonhockeyhistory.wordpress.com/2017/04/04/canucks-throughout-history-orland-kurtenbach/
If you'd like to help out and share your memories on Canucks throughout history, let me know and I'll add you to my list of sources! Credit will be given on the article.

I'm in the mood for potentially writing on my blog. Help me choose a topic: Top goalscorers of All-Time, Top playmakers of All-Time, Top Canuck goalscorers of All-Time, Top Canuck playmakers of All-Time, or Top Post-Lockout Teams.

I'm kind of at that point with my homework where I'm like:
"Maybe I can just save a blank word document and call that 'getting started' and call it a day".
Motivation is hard, sometimes.

I've been writing about a lot of NHL players from before the Original Six era and decided to make a Top 10 Pre-Original Six players list. The first bit is out now: https://hookedonhockeyhistory.wordpress.com/2017/05/16/top-10-pre-original-six-players-10-6/
I'm planning on making the second half soon.

@smithers joe My list is exclusive to the NHL, so Cyclone Taylor didn't make it at all. Lionel didn't make my list, but as you can see his brother did.
@Stamkos Gordie Howe didn't play in the pre-Original Six era, he was later on.
The final five should be out tomorrow!

I've realized that I have somewhat of a superiority complex when it come to hockey knowledge with the "average" hockey fan. I find myself getting very excited to unleash my research and knowledge on their opinions to impress them or something.
CDC is a nice community because I feel like a lot of users are like me and can relate.

i sure appreciate what you do with researching canuck and league history. it is informative and interesting. you make this forum better for me. thank you lad.
i don't really have a great hockey knowledge but proceed with the same method i use in all faucets of my life. i go with my gut feeling. sometimes i'm bang on and other times, i'm out to lunch. i hope that in those situations, fellow cdc'er can not hold me in too disregard. i can admit my fallacies and stinking thinking.
hell, i'm just a kid from smithers.
-
@Green Building, what was that about a superiority complex!?
I had six electric unicorns and some buds writing my posts last night.
And it's really the syntax errors making your eyes bleed there, Nazi.

Interesting stats with AJ Time: In 2009-10, Daniel Sedin had 56 assists in 63 games. In 82 games, this would be on pace for 73 assists. The current NHL record for assists by a LW in a season goes to Lemiuex, who played LW in 1996-97 and had 72 assists, so if Daniel had played an entire season at that projected rate, he might've broken an NHL record.
If you don't want to count Lemiuex, the guy below him is Bob MacMillan of the Atlanta Flames and his 71 assists in 1978-79.

@Baer. Hockey-Reference keeps track of positional changes throughout the years. That was my source and was also how I knew Linden wasn't a centre in his rookie season (I wasn't around back then). It's the only source for stats I've found that will show position changes throughout the years (NHL.com will just use one position for a player's entire career, like most sites).
-
Linden actually wasn’t a center at all prior to when he was drafted by the Canucks...so it’s not a surprise he was initially used as a winger with the Canucks. It goes to show you just how good he was (and no, I’m not saying he was a generational player) to be able to make such a drastic change. The only thing tougher is moving from center to D (or visa versa).
We were sooooo thin at center, Trev was shifted to center.
Not just a guy who led by example but had real talent.
-
Just went for my first run (a real short one) in years...
At least I have room for improvement.

Looked at my bank account and was pleasantly surprised, so I decided to take a look at housing prices to see if I could actually consider buying.
Suffice it to say I won't be any time soon.

Not a fan of the Willie firing decision. Our young guys need a developmental coach, not a coach who will get us wins. We won't be in the playoffs for at least one more, if not two more years, perhaps even longer. Furthermore, the young players need a sense of stability and a revolving door of coaches just brings about the Edmonton Oilers 2.0. This just feels like ownership being impatient and wanting wins now instead of waiting out the plan.
I swear, ownership panders way too much to the rabid fan base, giving them too much credit.

@Nuxfanabroad They must have been deciduous.
@ajhockey I'm relatively indifferent to this move, if we have even half the injuries we suffered this year, and if Miller decides to move on, we're likely picking in the top 10 next year as well no matter who the coach is. I think the little tidbits like WD's soundbite where he criticizes Labate's return to Utica add up to a greater difference of opinion between how JBTL and TL want things run.
I won't be surprised in the slightest if we play exactly the same way next year and people are asking for heads to roll all over again.
