i don't think that is accurate
i think the nhl has mandated they remain
in their home city presently
i'm fairly sure about this actually
So a Vancouver Canuck can't travel to Burnaby?

We'd have to shed a few contracts to make room for free agent signings IMO. The question is who.
Is that even possible at the moment? How would we get out from under a contract? I suppose we could mutually terminate Palmu's contract? I don't know if there's anyone else?

let's all be less cynical here
i heard the location of the anaheim ahl team
has considerably less virus present
they are doing this so they can require
he physically move to a safer locale
i'm sure he does not mind the pay cut
to benefit his overall health
I'm pretty sure players are free to travel where ever they like (within reason) without the assistance of an AHL demotion.

Any word on whether we're in on any of the top college free agents?

Yip. Whichever. I just want that big, ill fitting helmet Russian, back in this lineup.
I get the intrigue but is Tryankin better defensively than Stetcher? Because he isn't better offensively and he isn't going to come much cheaper. IMO if we cut Stetcher, it will either be to plug Rafferty in or another lower salary or if it were a clear upgrade and I'm not sure Tryamkin is an upgrade. Sure, he's bigger but that doesn't necessarily mean better. Troy is also a favorite in the dressing room and amungst the fans.

Ya, I played around with capfriendly for next year. I put the cap at 84 million so the bottom of the projection. It obviously depends what our UFA and RFA's sign for. Here is what I did:
Toffoli at 5.5m (I think this is fair, but he could get up to 6-6.5 on the high end)
Markstrom at 5.5m (could leverage our poor performance without him and get 6m, but he hasn't been super consistent over his career)
Tanev at 5m (maybe he argues to get the Myers 6m, but with his injury past I think we could argue him at 5)
Virtanen at 3.4m (used Kapanen as a comparable but slightly lower)
Gaudette at 1.25m (used Virtanen's last contract as a comparable)
Stetcher at 2.3m (same as this year, if its higher we drop him)
I traded Baer and Sutter for no roster pieces and we have 2.35 m in cap space. If the top 3 go for higher, we could look at trading Benn to get rid of his 2m or we drop stetcher and bring in rafferty.
So... it is not a given we can fit them all but it certainly is possible if we negotiate well and get rid of a couple contracts. It would become easy if Eriksson retires or mutually terminates his contract and or the cap is nearer the high end of the projection. Ferland and his health also will make a difference, my projected roster had him slot into the 4th line for Sutter. If he is unhealthy and remains on LTIR or retires than that is an additional 3.5m off the books.
Assuming your math adds up (I'm far too lazy for that), thanks for doing that. I think your projections are spot on, save a few hundred K. Assuming guys are willing to sign for a bit of a hometown discount. I'm hoping we can get Jake for $2.5 though. Josh Leivo money. I'm assuming you left Leivo off your team?
I was curious and very skeptical that we'd be able to re-sign everyone without trading significant prospects/picks. We'd definitely need to retain money at the minimum. It would be a godsend if we sent Loui down and eventually terminated his contract, but it's not something you can count on.

Incredible deal for a 3rd round pick. I know he's having an off year but he's still a 30+ point defender coming off a 60 point season. Could be a steal.

10$ says Kreider goes to Calgary for Lucic and a 1st... lol, but still, I could see him going to either of the Albertan teams.
Apparently Kreider has all 7 Canadian teams on his M-NTC, so I don't think he ends up in Calgary.

Why do you think Sutter, Benn, to Stecher have trade value? Sutter and Benn would if they were coming UFAs. Stecher is a coming RFA who is going to get a bad QO number that’s too much for him. These three have no value right now. It would actually cost us picks/prospects to dump Sutter and Benn.
Sutter I agree but I think Benn could get us a mid to late round pick. Stetcher could also get us a 3rd or 4th. Depth is key come playoff time and 3rd pairing dmen have a bit of value this time of year.

Baertschi + Woo for Simmonds?
Or
Woo + Roussel for Miles Wood?
I would love to get rid of Baertschi's contract but not at the expense of Woo. He's a gamer and we don't have anyone else like him in our system.
Miles Wood would be nice, but is he that much of an improvement on Roussel that he would be worth giving but Woo for? Not for me.
Prospects I'd consider trading:
Lockwood
Palmu
Perron
Brisebois
Gadjovich
Utunen
Teves
Jasek
McDonough
Chatfield
Focht
Karlsson
Sautner
Malone
Tryamkin

Eriksson obviously doesn't crack their lineup but I wonder if they'd be interested in someone like Motte or Schaller for a decent return?
Motte or Schaller and decent return don't go in the same sentence. Motte might get you a late round pick but I doubt Schaller is worth anything, especially at his salary.

Yep he's a 6'7" defenseman that weighs 270ish lbs and skates like the wind. We've already seen what he can do three or so years ago, it's not like we couldn't give it another go. We won't know until he comes to camp but as far as labels go, he was just fine on the bottom pairing the first time around and he won't be worse then that. Our defense needs some teeth and he'd bring more of that.
I'm not saying he can't play in the league, but he isn't even a star in the KHL, a league that is slightly better than the AHL. It would be unrealistic for us to expect him to be anything but a 3rd pairing defenseman at this point.

If I’m an Oilers fan, I commit suicide.
What if you didn't have to actually live in Edmonton though? I mean, it could be a lot worse. They have all those banners in the rafters, one of the most storied histories in the NHL for an expansion team, which includes arguably the greateast hockey player of all time. They also have arguably the best player in NHL currently. Maybe you don't have to kill yourself afterall Monty. But don't let me get in the way of your suicide

Yup.
Definitely a good deal for Nurse. Walks him to free agency and right out of Edmonton.
That's surprising. You'd think Nurse would have got less AAV for a player friendly term like that. If I'm an Oilers fan, this deal has me worried in the long term.

I think our fan base generally overrates Tryamkin. He's a # 6-7 NHL defenseman.

Simmonds would be a mistake . If they aren’t throwing a bad contract back such as sutter .
He's a pending UFA that would be a depth pick up. I don't think we're talking any serious assets here. Maybe the rights to Tryamkin or Lockwood and a 6th rounder gets it done?

I like him too but there's no way we're trading with Edmonton.

Lebrun said the Canucks had heavy interest in Simmonds last summer but he chose NJ instead (probs the money) and wondered if Simmonds wished he had Vancouver instead. sounded like he was our target last Summer and Ferland was the backup plan.
Rick Dhaliwal actually reported the opposite. He said Jim made a call to Simmonds' agent, but no offer was made. He went onto say they were interested in both Simmonds and Ferland but went with Ferland because he was cheaper and younger. He also said Benning has been a big Simmonds fan since his days im Boston when his Bruins would play the Flyers.
I'd take Rick's word over Lebrun, especially in this market.

Don't want to give up futures for rentals. We'd also have to give extra to get rid of a bad contract of our own.
For the most part, I would agree with your first statement and I think Benning is on the same page. If we see any trades, I think they will be of the depth variety.
As far as getting rid of a bad contract goes, that would be if Ferland isn't still on LTIR.

this version of Simmonds? it's hard to say because we haven't really seen much of Bailey and big Mac.
Well, for starters Simmonds is still an every day NHL player, whereas Bailey and MacEwen are not and have never been. Plus Simmons track record, experience (including playoffs) and leadership give him the edge, even though he's not the player he used to be.
Unfortunately I don't think MacEwen or Bailey will have much of an NHL career ahead of them.

Like the player, don't like the price.
Do you mean his contract? $5M is definitely steep. Like a previous poster mentioned, this is likely in case Ferland ends up back on LTIR and if that happens, NJ would need to eat salary to bring it down to $3.5M. No one is going to take on that salary at full value.
As far as the price goes, it can't be much more than a C prospect and late round pick.

Not sure why we'd waste a roster spot on Simmonds. I don't see what he adds.
He's likely better than Schaller, MacEwen and Bailey. Even if he's our 13th forward, you need depth in a playoff run. There's bound to be injuries. He also plays a playoff style game. If the cost was minimal, it wouldn't be a bad acquisition.

Lockwood plus Baer work?
Unfortunately not. Lockwood isn't enough to entice a team to take on Baertschi's contract, nevermind the cost of acquiring Simmons. Lockwood alone for Simmons might be enough if Lockwood is willing to sign in NJ. Maybe send a 6th or 7th round pick NJ's way as well. But we're going to have to give up at least a 3rd round pick or a B prospect to get rid of Baertschi's contract. I'd probably rate Lockwood as a C prospect at best. My 2 cents.

This thread is making me puke with Demko to the laffs
Well, Dubas did you and Alf a solid last night.
What other teams need a goalie? Edmonton and SJ (no thanks - divisional rivals). Chicago could be a player with both their goalies heading to UFA. I'd prefer sending Demko out east though. Perhaps Detroit? Jimmy Howard is a UFA..not sure who they plan on using as a starter? They could be a good target. What about Ottawa?

They coud make things fun and turn the compliance buy out into a tradeable asset. That way it would also benefit teams that weren't in cap hell.
