This is shocking - even though there were hints about it in the past days. So many good people in here with a passion for the game. I enjoyed everyone's perspectives - even those that i got heated and argued with. The way I see it is if Im arguing with someone about something regarding this team at 10pm on a week night during the off season they must love the team too.
I work for a law enforcement org , approaching retirement. The job has been hard on me more often than not and this place was one of my escapes - 'talking' and reading about a team ive followed since elementary school with people that love the sport. Thanks to all the mods, VC, Stealth, Deb...for all your hard work and insights.
Finally, the decision is puzzling. With the team not doing well for so many years I was afraid we are going to lose the younger generation. The kids I see around me these days seem to be more into basketball and NFL. Why not keep up a place like this that generates interest around the team. Is the technology getting old (like me)?

6'5"
Viking Alberta
No minus years outside of his first short stint in the NHL
This lineup needed more sandpaper and grit, PA addressed some of that today.

Benson sounds like another Virtanen bust winger to me and we have a million of them
When I see 5'9" on the card im thinking the guy has to be uber talented to win with. Im not betting on that, especially in light of how we need more size and grit all over the roster.

So You keep OEL at his cap hit till 2027 or you buy him out, use the difference between the penalty and his salary to improve the D or 3c. The penalty lasts several years longer, ouch.
If im gonna bet, this doesnt look that bad. OEL was not good, he was not good in his last year in Arizona, and judging by his age and injury history he probably wont get any better. Imagine Petey and Hughes - guys you will inevitably need to convince to stay here - watching the likes of OEL and Myers defend again, for another year.
This looks painful any way you handle it. Im thinking its too early to call which option is the least painful.

I’m fine with George McPhee finally getting success. He seemed like a genuine and honourable man while he was here in Vancouver. Came up short in Washington.
That said, I hope Vegas doesn’t get another whiff for 50 years.

My dad always used to say that about Greg Millen. Didn’t even matter what he was saying. Dad would just walk in to the room and say “shut up Millen!”
I like your dad. Millen was and still is unbearable ! Maybe worse than Simpson.

This is just another reason why Eichel is a guy who wins and McDivid isn’t. He makes the sacrifice. While McWhiner does what he does best - Whiner Baby.
If ‘mcwhiner’ had that Vegas D behind him I think things would be different. Just like Eichel on buffalo had like zero success.
that d reminds me of the LA D that won cups. Big , physical, and very good at boxing out players.

The fact remains the same is that this team has had very few Stars and they have managed to play great hockey. Look at their goalie, a 4th round pick to acquire him? A 2 Million dollar goalie in the finals going up against a 10 Million dollar goalie.
Yeah you are probably right about Vegas fans but I just like the hockey that we are seeing.
A good coach, with a good system, with every player buying into it. I sure hope one day the Canucks can play like this.
I agree with your points. I’d like to see us with a big mobile defence one day.

These guys are growing on me. No prima donna, whiners , they play a full 60 minutes, they finish their checks and they play like a team from the 1st line to the 4th.
You guys can have your Bob's and McDavid's, I like these plummers who come to play hockey every night and most importantly, when it counts,
I have nothing personal against the players. And btw I wanted mcdavid to lose I’m just watching these nouveaux fans in the crowd cheering for a team in the finals when 5 years ago they prob had no clue what off side or icing is. Meanwhile you’ve watched your team for how many years get basically no breaks. The only reason that are here is because of the generous expansion draft rules Gary et Al afforded them. They should have suffered like all the other expansion franchises imho.
the rest of your post.. about playing when it counts.. yeah I’m sure that doesn’t apply to the team that knocked out Boston in clutch fashion. Or winning how many games in OT. It’s all subjective.

Canuck fans cheering Vegas is disturbing tbh
I don’t get it either. I’ve been sitting around tvs and radios for decades like a Jack o lantern watching my team come up dry..and along comes a Frankenstein team constructed with bettmans recipe book, been around less than some of my undershirt beer stains, and they in the cup final. Yeah take a seat you bums! Lol

I think I'm rooting for Florida despite picking Carolina to come out of the east, I love what Bob's done and they've got the Luongo factor
Give Luongo a cup and he's triple gold
I’m rooting for them too. I think it’s coz they knocked out Boston and they look like they never give up. part of it is I know flames fans are seething watching tkachuk and Bennett have this success… after all the big talk about how Calgary was going to be a force with huberdeau and weegar.

Yes, I am. Isn't that the point? So, McDavid has zero fault for his team choking 2 years in a row? It's the rest of the team's fault? Doesn't McDavid play like 25 minutes a night?
If your team has the most lethal powerplay in hockey history, it makes sense to orient your game towards that. You shouldn't fault a player or a team for playing to its strengths.
This is what you said in regards to the Oilers and McDavid. You are making the point that McDavid is using the PP to try and win hockey games. We know that strategy doesn't work in the playoffs and last night was a perfect example of why. As you pointed out top playoff teams don't take alot of penalties, so why are the Oilers still trying to use that strategy? Are they not capable of scoring 5 on 5 enough to win a hockey game? Is McDavid not capable of changing his game in the playoffs? If not, then is that not his fault?
McDavid had 20 points in the playoffs, 12 of them on the PP. In comparison, Eichel had 14 points in the playoffs, but only 2 points on the PP. So, at even strength Eichel is a better player. Why can't McDavid outscore Eichel at 5 on 5? You say it is not his fault, it is the team's fault. This is confusing to me. McDavid plays 25 minutes a night but can't outscore Jack Eichel 5 on 5. And this is supposedly not McDavid's fault, it is the teams fault. That makes no sense.
What makes total sense is that 5 on 5 McDavid isn't actually the best player in the league. He can't even outscore Jack Eichel when it counts the most. Sorry, but McDavid is a product of his environment. Put him on a team that doesn't get alot of PP's and he's not even a 100-point player. He couldn't hold Crosby's jockstrap.
Won't even get into the Petey comparisons. Petey is like a 100+ point player on a non-playoff team who could win the Selke trophy. That type of player is exactly what you need in the playoffs to win a Stanley Cup...
This is why im not buying the "McDavid is better than Gretzky" arguments i see (admittedly mostly from younger fans). Gretzky could play 4 d chess out there, 5 v 5 he was amazing.
When I see McDavid im thinking "a better version of Bure and Selanne". Would love to have seen what the latter 2 would do with no two line off side, no clutch and grab, no opposing team goon trying to kill you. Granted today the D men are more mobile and goaltending is better but Selanne got 76 goals as a rookie.
McDavid is no Gretzky, hell he might not even be the best overall player on his own team. Drai looks scarier in the playoffs.

Vegas played a great shutdown game. Big on defence. Big down the middle. They have a nice blueprint on how to build a winning team. No cups yet, but 4 conference finals in 6 years. More than the Canucks have had in their 53 year existence.
I was just thinking the same and thinking how many d men we need to upgrade to run with these teams.

I don’t care who wins it all now. Toronto out. Alberta out. Off season will be pleasant, looking forward to the draft.
